  1. They're either waiting to resolve the Ortiz situation first, or they're posturing for either Oswalt or Floyd. They will get a starting pitcher soon, I'm feeling certain of it now.
  2. I double-checked this with the list Rivernator posted, and they are almost identical, with a few very small differences that may be due to all-star awards (Youkilis was off by 50,000). It took us a while to get a definitive list, but I think these must be very close.
  3. One report I found said he's way ahead of schedule: https://twitter.com/#%21/PeteAbe/status/136602875232133120 No setbacks, no reason to believe he can't follow the same recovery schedule as all the other pitchers who receive Tommy John's. There have not been many reports on him, but the fact that Dice-k is in Florida right now, and not Japan is a very good sign. This is a contract year for him, so he'll have to perform well to get a good contract playing for the Lions next year.
  4. There are a lot of technicalities involved here. Based on the Ben's comments, the option definitely is not immediately exercised with the surgery. There many questions to this that we may not have resolved. If the option is exercised halfway through 2013, will it lower the luxury tax value of the contract? If a player signs a contract extension once the year starts, it does not count towards luxury tax-- does it count the same way with exercised option years? The other question is: Will the Red Sox be able to handle the 13 million dollars added on top of Luxury tax in 2015 because they exercised this option? He'll be making .5 million, but he'll hit the tax at 13 million-- will they be able to hand him off to a low salary team and get rid of the luxury tax hit?
  5. Woah, now here is a real surprise. Oscar Tejada was ranked #4 at a national level:
  6. Lavarnway was ranked as #8 for catchers.
  7. Varitek accepted a position as a backup catcher gracefully. He knows his knees are shot. Wakefield is the arrogant one who still is determined to play-- Varitek has handled the situation fine, he's a 40 year old catcher, and he knows exactly what that means in the MLB.
  8. This appears to be the most accurate luxury tax post I've seen so far (and I've seen a ton). Its a shame you went haywire already-- we can always use good posts like this. That being said-- the Red Sox were over the luxury cap by about 10 million last year, so I get the feeling that they don't mind being about that high over again this year.
  9. Dear Ben-- Sign the damn check.
  10. I am not pleased with this deal. I like Aviles as a SS, and his stats seem to indicate that SS is his best defensive position.... but then who plays LF? The bench, and bench depth are very weak, and Iggy will not be ready until 2013. They traded Yamaico Navarro for junk last year, and traded Lowrie and Scutaro this offseason. Is there a plan at SS? Unless Ben has some masterplan here, I have a hard time defending the Ortiz move now. Seriously, what were they thinking here?
  11. The problem is, the Red Sox never actually go through arbitration, so most of us have not seen how it works, and the Yankees don't go to process very often either. I just don't see how he could ask for that much money, but if he could be had for 12.5 million, how great would that be? That would be a good value signing, despite all the arguments about what a bad move Ben made on this one.
  12. Oswalt is a 34 year old ace who is looking for a 1/8 million contract, and yet no one has given him an offer yet. Maybe he isn't healthy? I'd take half a season of Oswalt for 8 million, but we'll see what happens.
  13. Could be interesting. I'll probably have a better idea of where I'll be a little closer to this summer.
  14. Right, and Floyd won't cost 8 prospects either-- what I'm saying is that BC is looking for value.
  15. You're missing the point. Darvish will take a year to adjust.
  16. How is it that you can criticize Lester for blowing up in September, and Papelbon is completely immune? Lester had a 3.09 ERA outside of September, but he gets all the s***. The Red Sox's season ended with Papelbon on the mound two of the last three years.
