  1. Maybe this was added by the writer, or maybe it wasn't. Many many many scouts have compared him to Ozzie Smith. He's an 80 on all the defensive scouting scales that you will find. He's also only 21 years old. His glove is the real deal. For you and the rest of the pessimists, if you're going to be cynical, stick to his bat, please.
  2. And what if the whole team IS hitting? There are six bats on this team that could potentially put up MVP caliber numbers. Six. The backend is pretty decent too-- Cody Ross will likely hit .260-.270 with 20 home runs, and Sweeney got on base at .350 in Oakland, both playing in pitcher's stadiums last year, and right at prime years. When Salty is DFAed and replaced by Lavarnway, this will be a very potent lineup, even if there is a hole at #9.
  3. Bonjour.
  4. Seriously, you're a broken record. You've talked about these in atleast 20 posts, and that isn't an exaggeration.
  5. Wow, the Yankees salary dumped a player, and plan on using the money to get another player. Must be nice.
  6. I threw out some numbers in another thread, but Wakefield had nearly identical ERA, innings per game and WHIP as Burnett in 2011, in the same division. If someone is willing to give 13 million to Burnett, someone would definitely be willing to give 2-3 million to Wakefield. Look at the numbers of all the Red Sox starters in 2011. No one seems to understand that Wakefield was effectively the Red Sox's #3 starter. He pitched twice as many innings as Buccholz. Better numbers than Bedard/Lackey/Dice-k/Weiland/Miller. He's terrible and I don't want him back, but if someone gets hurt... he's probably better than the other options.
  7. Rays, Texas, Cardinals, Braves, Giants, Yankees all have pretty amazing rotations.
  8. In the fearless prediction thread, I made a prediction-- Salty gets DFAed by the middle of the year. Shoppach has an arm, and Lavs has the bat. What does Salty have?
  9. I didn't give a f*** when Manny didn't want to play in Boston. He was still by far the best option at his position. If he would only get on the field, and give it 80%, its still better than his replacement-- Darnell McDonald. Same with Oswalt. Come here and pitch, and nothing else matters to me.
  10. He doesn't want to come to Boston for 5 million. 10 million, that's a different story. Cook has averaged 120 IP the last three years. Padilla has averaged 40 IP the last three years. I'd be more concerned with Padilla, personally.
  11. Sure, but the chance of both of those guys making the roster are very high, considering their competition.
  12. The Lackey savings are 2.66 million. The Red Sox will probably need 2-4 million from the Cubs to stay under the cap, and even then they would have to account for extra salaries by incentives reached, and I didn't include Cook/Padilla's high salaries into the figures. They're not staying under the cap unless they trade one of their all-stars.
  13. Here you go. It looked like 173ish after the Ross deal, and before benefits. 10 million for benefits means they're over by about 4 million. http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/alex-speier/2012/01/26/budget-isnt-problem-another-look-red-sox-payro
  14. So... which addition to the team pushed them over then? In the last month, they've essentially gone down in luxury tax cost.
  15. From the horse's mouth:http://boston.sbnation.com/boston-red-sox/2012/2/10/2790586/red-sox-president-larry-lucchino-were-going-to-fly-by-the-luxury-tax
  16. Teams have budgets! Just because they have the money to go over the cap doesn't mean they have the money to blow the cap. 5 million over the cap will cost them 7 million. 10 million over will cost them 14 million. They likely have the money to spend the 7 million, but the 14 million could be too much.
  17. They were always going to be over the cap. I'm not sure why you were so convinced they wanted to stay beneath it. My point is that the 15 million paid for Ortiz could have been used in other ways to build their team. My favorite options include holding onto your starting shortstop or signing a pitcher who can pitch deep into a game.
  18. The decision is about the years. He'll be done with his contract around age 30-- the year most elite players get ridiculous paydays. Had he signed one of the six year deals teams were offering him, he'd be a free agent at 32, and would probably not get the same kind of gravy-train megadeal.
  19. If money isn't a problem, why trade Scutaro? Answer that question, and it will prove you right. Ortiz had a 4.2 WAR last year, and Scutaro had a 2.9 WAR. 9 million dollars to find 1.3 wins somewhere seems like a very easy task to me.
  20. This arbitration case has turned into a complete disaster. I was okay with 10 million, maybe even 12-13 million, but 14.5 million is far more than he was worth. That money could have been spent on much better things. 6 million for Scutaro and 9 million for Jackson or Kuroda or Oswalt. Or 15 million straight into Buerhle. Or put A-Ram at 3B and let Youkilis/Lavarnway DH. Or more relief pitching to take the strain off an overburdened bullpen. Or putting it towards an Ellsbury extension. Hell, I'd take Jon Garland, Dan Wheeler and Scutaro over Ortiz. That was a Yankee move. Bid against yourself and overpay a guy out of loyalty.... when the guy openly talked about disloyalty and joining the scumbag Yankees.
  21. Wakefield has averaged 135 innings because he hasn't been a full-fledged starter the last few years, because he hasn't been good enough to be a full-fledged starter. That's the point-- that both of these guys suck.
  22. Pitcher A had a 5.12 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP, and pitched 5.89 innings per start in the AL East. Pitcher B had a 5.15 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP, and pitched 5.96 innings per start in the AL East.
  23. Jeff Passan is a whiny little bitch. He's usually very negative towards teams that spend lots of money. I've read a lot of his staff, and it is clear that he does not like the Red Sox. He went to college in Syracuse, so maybe he picked up a bad habit there.
