  1. Great baserunning by Cody Ross.
  2. Sounds like the Pirates are getting Wand Rod.
  3. I think it is a combination of things. Shaky arm, poor plate blocking, and his ability to frame a pitch is very much lacking. Pitchers don't have much confidence in him. It would be one thing if it was a small sample size, but throughout his career, pitchers have done significantly worse when pitching to him than opposed to the other catcher on the roster. Relief pitchers have a very different mind set-- there is no settling in, or figuring out which pitches work, they just throw the ball, and hope their stuff is good for that given night. That, and Bobby Valentine is a matchup genius Not to mention the abysmal OBP and strikeout rates.
  4. This team needs Iggy and Lavs up here.
  5. Kinsler picked off, and out of the game? Wow.
  6. Mediocre pitcher tonight, good hitter's park, Hanley rumors on the rise... I'd say over.
  7. I certainly hope that the FO figures out that they need to firesale. They're 5 games back in the loss column right now, and that's just for a one game playoff that could very easily send them back home. That one extra game of revenue isn't worth getting under the luxury tax this year, or possibly build up to the best farm system in the majors. They need to target teams who want to win this year, and willing to give up elite prospects. If it takes three guys to get one elite prospect, do it. If they can get rid of Beckett, do it. Try to sign Ross long term, and if not sell high high on this year's best hitter against lefties. There's gold at the deadline this year, if Dempster told us anything.
  8. He's still a gold glover defensively though. Despite his offensive struggles, he has a 1.8 WAR this year-- that's how good his defense is. He's also hitting almost .300 outside of Seattle's pitcher park. I think it is pretty well understood that once he gets of there he'll start hitting big time. There's also generally a premium on franchise players-- the 2 million the Mariners saved in this trade, they'll lose in fans at the stadium and at home. It really is a terrible trade for them.
  9. The Yankees get a future hall of famer for two nothings, and don't even pay his full salary. Surprise surprise.
  10. Do we give up? No. No. No. Absolutely not. Do we try to get value from short term players who could bring back value for this team? Absolutely.
  11. The best Barry Bonds ever did was .370. I think that says a good deal about the chance of it ever happening again. Mccutchen is hitting .374, but his BABIP is monstrous. I just don't see it happening.
  12. I was where you are right now a while back. But I look at it this way. This team has the best farm it has had in several years. It has a pile of trade sell-high players on its roster now, and could reload in a very big way for next year. Lester and Buchholz have had bad seasons but you know what? They can very easily still be ace pitchers. Get rid of Beckett, and this team can afford a new arm next year-- Dicek, Jenks, Youk's contracts are all off the books. Ortiz is either gone, or gets an arbitration paycut. Peeling off Beckett opens a ton of space, and trading away middle pieces can earn this team the best farm in baseball, plus money to spend, and lots of core pieces still in tact.
  13. Cliff Lee is not coming to Boston. The Red Sox don't have that kind of money lying around, and if they did, they'd go for someone who isn't 34 years old. Like Greink/Marcum/Hamels/Sanchez.
  14. I think this game is the best case scenario. Red Sox start to slip from the wildcard. Become sellers at the deadline. And on top of that, they won't trade Lester since his value his dropped significantly in this start. Next year, he comes back guns blazing. I have no doubt in that.
  15. I disagree strongly on Lee. Paying 25 million a year for the backend of a contract despite having very little cap space seems like a bad deal waiting to happen. I'd be very surprised if the top of organization agreed to add that kind of payroll. They'd be better off pulling away Hamels/Greinke and overspending to extend them.
  16. And if they lose 4 of 6, they'll be 4-5 games back on the wildcard, and desperately need to sell.
  17. How the Red Sox fare over the next week and a half will determine whether this team needs to be buyers or sellers. So yes, this week is more important than the first week in august, or september, games against fellow AL East teams especially so.
