  1. I think you're half right. Wade Miley's contract is already calculated into luxury tax, but because Porcello's extension was signed after the start of the season, it doesn't affect luxury tax until next year.
  2. Don't forget 15 million for raises to Miley/Porcello.
  3. Price is still badmouthing Ortiz. Probably not the best offseason target. I sure hope he doesn't go to New York.
  4. Let's just take a step back here. If Owens was still a top of the rotation pitcher, who in their right mind would trade him for two months of a guy like Kaz who has a career 3.96 ERA, and just had a triceps injury?
  5. It's skewed by April, reportedly issues controlling the curveball, which he appears to have worked on.
  6. He had a forgettable April, but he's improved a lot after that. Even if Owens is more of a top 50 prospect than a top 20 prospects, he's still probably worth enough to pull in Kaz, especially since he's a bit beat up right now.
  7. I knew a Polish guy named Kaczmirski. Probably can't seem to shake that one. Come on Jacko, No one is trading two top prospects for two months of Kazmir.
  8. If I were the A's, I would want a top prospect for Kazcmir, so one of the above makes sense. The question is Sonny Gray's value. Would 2 top prospects be enough? 3? Its never an easy question.
  9. At this point, Hamels is roughly worth his contract. Giving up any significant prospects for him will be an overpay, but some teams are willing to overpay a little.
  10. Miley is about where we expected him to be, slightly worse maybe, but not surprising. Buchholz performed better than expected. Eduardo was a huge surprise, and has been a big win for the rotation. But Kelly, Masterson, Porcello. Wow. How did a bunch of young healthy arms with a 3.50 career ERA, a 4.00 ERA, and 4.20 ERA suck so hard?
  11. Swihart, Owens, Margot and one more for Kaczmir and Sonny Gray. Who hangs up first?
  12. Besides Zimmerman, who do you think is untouchable? The Orioles are 4 games back, the Rangers are 6 games back, and everyone else is even more. Fister might be available in a trade that fills a hole for the Nats.
  13. Its midway through the year and a number of soon to be quality free agent pitchers haven't been signed to new contracts yet. Look at this mess: Price (29) 2.36 ERA this year Kaczmir (32) 2.49 ERA this year. Gallardo (30) 2.62 ERA this year. Wei Yin Chen (30) 2.76 ERA this year. Cueto (29) 2.72 ERA this year. Zimermann (28) 3.22 ERA this year. Fister (31) 4.08 ERA this year, Samardzija (30) 4.02 ERA this year. Greinke (31) Oh s*** 1.39 ERA is going to opt out of his contract. I wouldn't be surprised if the Red Sox went for one at the deadline, and another in the offseason.
  14. I originally believed Swihart might shift in and out of C/1B, but there isn't much future there unless Pablo/Hanley get traded.
  15. If someone is willing to give up a top prospect for an expensive closer, Papelbon wouldn't be on the Phillies right now. Why trade a guy who has performed when you're not getting talent back, and you're going to have to look at the single riskiest and unreliable position in free agency ? Jenks, Melancon and Bailey are not distant memories.
  16. Here's a crazy idea. How about if the Red Sox stay put? They don't buy. They don't sell. They give the team a chance. Maybe they look for a 4.50 ERA inning eater type, but otherwise stay put. This team has no high value free agents. If they can't get any high ceiling prospects for Koji/Ogando/Hanley/Buchholz or salary relief for some of the stinkers then why bother?
  17. Before Moncada, they overspent on Espinoza and Acosta in the international draft, but they're still high schoolers.
  18. It seems to me that they are doing all the right things, but the results have been mixed when it comes to pitching. The Red Sox overpaid to get the top two pitchers in the international draft last year. They dismantled the team in 2012 and 2014 to try to get into elite draft picks and traded for a bunch of prospects like Webster RDLR Escobar Hembree Wright and Rodriguez. They paid stupid money to acquire Moncada. This Brian Johnson guy ? They knew he was a low ceiling high floor guy, but the draft class was weak and it made sense to draft someone who would hit the majors early. Most of the moves they make are logical and but unfortunately, developing players takes time. Hopefully Owens and Johnson have excellent debuts this year.
  19. Last place finishes in back to back years ? I think you need to look up the word 'finish' in the dictionary because you keep using it incorrectly. I joke, but there is a lot of baseball left. And I think Ben and the farm system may surprise you.
  20. I'm not upset about Xander being left out. But Kershaw? Really? You're leaving out Clayton friggen Kershaw?
  21. Its a shame Pedroia couldn't be starting this key series. Hopefully he'll be back healthy next week. This is a key series, not only because of their opponent. The Orioles, Jays and Rays are all playing division leaders in the Nationals, Astros and Royals.
  22. Who keeps talking up Hernandez? He's a non prospect and won't be a key piece in any deal, as far as I know. Wright won't be traded because knuckleballers are complicated, but most teams would be happy to have any of the other guys as a headliner for a deal.
  23. They could potentially add pitching from the farm system. Johnson and Owens could both turn into middle of the rotation guys, and Wright still seems like a decent pitcher. Porcello/Kelly/Masterson have ERAs of 5.90/5.67/6.14 in 220 innings. Even if we could replace those with 3.80/4.30/4.50 ERAs, that turns into a lot of extra wins.
  24. The Red Sox are only 2.5 games back from 2nd place. Its definitely possible that they have a respectable year even without trades. However, they are going to need to get an ace next year anyway, so it makes sense for just to get Cueto now, show him the perks, and sign him before it gets too cold in Boston.
  25. There is an unusually large supply which may keep prices less insane than usual. Cueto, Kaczmir, Shark, Hamels, Latos, Haren are all clearly available and there are plenty of other excellent pitchers on bad teams. Ben's job may be on the line here, so he might just go for it.
