    Two bobbles in the outfield already. Not sure why Ellsbury didn't run out to get that one. Hopefully Lester can sneak through this inning.

    Lester's catcher ERA is 3.55 with Salty and 4.10 with David Ross. David Ross is the better catcher, but Lester is much more familiar with Salty at this point. We're also talking about a Tiger team that doesn't have basestealers.

    Ross -- .167/.273/.271/.544 against RHP. .182/.250/.455/.705 against Sanchez Saltalamacchia .294/.350/.523/.873 against RHP ( no starts against Sanchez). This one is a bit of a head scratcher.

    I didn't realize this earlier, but one of the most significant factors in this series is the handedness of the Tiger rotation. 4 right handed pitchers. The Red Sox have an .820 OPS against righties and a .750 OPS against lefties. Was anyone expecting Nava to have a line of .322/.411/.484/.894 against RHP this season? . .411, what a monster OBP against righties. http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/stats/batting/_/name/bos/seasontype/2/cat/OPS/split/32/boston-red-sox With the exception of Middlebrooks, the entire lineup has crushed right handed pitching with OBPs averaging in the .370's and bottoming out at .340. Not only that, having 4 straight righties lets some of the platoon guys be more comfortable with their roles, and gives Farrell a much easier decision managing each game. It does makes me seriously question the decision to leave Ryan Lavarnway off the playoff roster however.

    In all fairness, there's a negative bias towards any player on this team who isn't top 5 at their position. As someone who loathed him as a pitching coach, I believe Farrell gets a huge free pass after the turnaround. He has made a few mistakes with the bullpen and lineup, but he has also made some decisions that have worked out very well.

    I know the feeling, but relationships are about compromise. I've found that the trick is that when you have a girlfriend over, still watch the game, but give up Talksox. You can sneak one on your phone in the kitchen/bathroom every now and then.

    The bat-s*** insane thing I learned today.... Napoli has had a comparable -- if not better -- season than Fielder this year.

    The Tigers had two series against the Red Sox. The more recent one, the Red Sox humiliated the Tigers 2-1. The first series was in June was before the Red Sox hit their stride... two of the losses came from Andrew Bailey in the pre-Uehara era, and Allen Webster. Adding Peavy, Buchholz and Middlebrooks are big difference makers here.

    Everyone keeps saying that... but somehow the pitching is still throwing out Verlander and two other guys who will get extended Cy Young looks. I just don't understand how their defense can be as bad as it is, and still have so many guys sporting 2.00 and 3.00 ERAs. Was the competition in the AL Central really that bad? *checks stats* Detroit 47 - 29 against AL Central. 46 - 40 against everyone else. Red Sox 44 -32 against the Al East 53 -33 Against everyone else. If there was a stat that gives me confidence about the series, that's the one.

    I posted a nearly identical post last offseason comparing Players A - F, which turned out to be Ells, Vic, Upton, Sanchez, Bourn and someone else. Victorino always end up looking like the best deal.

    I remember him forecasting TJS for Lackey about two months ahead of time.

    It seemed that way for the first few games but the last two seemed much cleaner. It probably didn't hurt that ellsbury and Vic were such distractions on the base paths. The Red Sox saw so many fastballs this series.

    I said it in the 6th inning, but win-or-lose, that was one helluva game. 13 different pitchers. No team had a lead larger than 1 run until the 9th inning. Solid defense from everyone and several double plays. The game was won by future star Xander Bogaertz, and the series lost by future star Will Myers. It was a nail-biter till the end.
