  1. Can't you trade a prospect as a PTNL? Trading one top 150 prospects for a poor defensive 1B with a .800 OPS was bad enough, but adding a top 100 prospect on top of him? Yikes.
  2. The OBP is nice, but would you trade a top 100 overall prospect to get a .800 OPS firstbaseman with a mediocre glove? Any less than a Mookie Betts, Swihart or Ball would not be enough for him.
  3. Sure, but it is a whole lot easier for a team like the Mariners to overbid on a player when you're only giving up a second rounder.
  4. Those bastards and their protected 6th overall pick.
  5. All the big spenders already have first basemen. Unless Seattle or Colorado decide to overpay big time, I don't see him getting 4 years from anyone else.
  6. The deeper we get into the offseason, the less I think the Yanks want him back. They are comfortable giving him 180, and he wants 300+. That's a big gap. They seem to have their sights on a lot of free agents -- free agents that make sense to make their team better -- Tanaka, Balfour, Beltran, Drew. I would not be surprised if they try out the Red Sox's 2012 offseason... except with more expensive free agents.
  7. I'm sure one of the stat gurus can explain it better than I can, but from what I understand, the stats they use to evaluate defense don't apply to catchers, so the defense stats (and WAR in general) aren't all that accurate for catchers.
  8. Report coming through that Navarro may sign soon, and it won't be with the Red Sox. Running out of non-Salty catcher options.
  9. I don't get this justification at all. It is still very early -- the only players to have signed this early have been seriously overpaid, ie Peralta, Ruiz, McCann, and Vargas.
  10. Who do they pursue after Beltran though? Stephen Drew for 2B is the only name that makes sense, but he will probably want to stick at short. No relievers have received QOs. Choo and Ellsbury no longer fit. They don't want Santana, and Tanaka/Garza won't cost picks.
  11. A report came out a few weeks ago that Seattle really isn't interested in Ellsbury, and it is just another Boras marketing ploy. For a team with poor pitching like theirs, it makes more sense to add two bats at 60 a piece or three at 40 a piece than one injury prone bat at 120.
  12. Just to be clear, "resting Pedroia" is something that would CAUSE a lot of anxiety, especially for the managers:p
  13. That's my concern. When was the last time he went through a season completely healthy? Foot surgery in 2010 and again in 2011. Thumb issue in 2012, broken ring finger. Thumb surgery in 2013.
  14. 4/60 in the hand is better than 4/80 in the bush. At 34, I wouldn't see him that much of an opportunity to cash in for much more.
  15. Weren't we saying the same exact thing about Jackie Bradley last year? Spring training can be deceiving sometimes. There's no reason not to get someone to fill in at depth, especially if it is at low cost. Do you think that if Vazquez or Lavs are lighting the world on fire in AAA, they'll be blocked because the Red Sox spent 2 million dollars on Navarro, or sent out their #45 prospect for Hannigan? I doubt it. The scenario you are suggesting is one that the Red Sox have tried the last few years, and failed miserably with it. Remember when we had Nick Green at shortstop? Or Darnell McDonald in CF? That's what happens when a team doesn't have enough depth at a position.
  16. I've been promoting the idea of Granderson for a while. I don't think he would be interested in a 1 year deal though... he'll have no problem getting an AAV of 15 million on 3-4 years.
  17. Pedroia is a franchise player. They know he won't be worth the money in the later years, but there is an intangible value that he will bring to the team. In the meantime, paying 13-14 million a year for a 6 WAR player will be very rewarding. The incredibly low AAV for a former MVP is a big factor here too.
  18. Definitely way overpaid, but I can see their thought process. He plays at a position where they are desperate for more production. He's been healthy his entire career. Very strong defense. No draft pick compensation. Deep playoff experience. They probably gauged the SS market and didn't find any other options.
  19. They may very well trade him this offseason. The only thing preventing them from selling high on him is that when you have a deep farm system it is hard for team to justify trading a star for another team's #10 prospect, even if he did have a .400+ OBP in the minors year with solid defense at a prime position.
  20. Yankees apparently setting their eyes on Beltran as their first priority right now. Smart move -- Beltran makes much more sense with the cost of a 2nd round pick than a 1st rounder.
  21. UZR may have been a bit kind to Napoli last year, but he seems to be a very passable first baseman. If you look at his career offensive numbers, his 2013 numbers were no outlier -- they were right where they were supposed to be. 2013 .259/.360/.482/.842 Career .259/.357/.502/.859 31.5 HRs per 150 games, 160K per 150 games. I see absolutely no reason not to re-sign him -- especially if they can get him for 2 years with an option year that vests if he doesn't lose time due to AVN.
  22. Is anyone else getting the feeling that the Red Sox are actually trying to re-sign Ellsbury? His market seems slow, and there hasn't been much movement by the Red Sox so far. Most of the guys the Red Sox have targeted are bargain bin type players, ie Hudson, Ruiz, Hannigan -- as if they are leaving a big chunk of money open for him.
  23. If the Red Sox saw Salty as a 11 million dollar player, they would have offered him a QO. I think they see him as a 7 million dollar player.
  24. I am starting to think that RF at Fenway Park requires more defense than 35%. Having someone with a good arm, and the range of a center fielder helped this team significantly last year.
  25. The Twins seem to be high on him right now. His market has increased quite a bit with the overpays of McCann and Ruiz.
