They could trade for Halladay or sign Holliday and it still could be less. Halladay would make their payroll what 206? it was 207 last year, which is a downgrade. They did that last year from 209 to 207. In signing Holliday they could pull a CC and give him a large bonus and pay him only 10 or 12 million this year which would put them under the 207 number as well.

Also remember they want Damon back, but not at high value. You float that you aren't going to spend a ton of money and it puts even more pressure on him. If the Yankees want a $210 million payroll or more with the right players, then they can certainly do it.

I stumbled across this site as I was looking for prospect forums. I'm a Yankees fan but love to read what the Red Sox fans think of their own and even the Yankees spects. I usually go by the name TheHugeUnit, changed it for the first time when I registered here. You'll probably see me in the Yankees forum or Red Sox prospect forum the most.
