  1. The reason why both LA teams are throwing money around FAs like drunken sailors is because they have money to burn from the Fox sports local TV contract. The Angels blew everybody out of the water with Pujols--even knowing his best years might be behind him. Same deal with Hamilton. Neither team is concerned about money, but their performances so far indicates they haven't been wise in spending it. Money can buy you love, but it doesn't always buy you wins.
  2. They need to see what their top pitching prospects can do--before the trade deadline.
  3. Typical example of using a closer when you might not have to, just because it's a fantasy save situation. Fortunately, Gomes saved the day. Too bad Doubront didn't get a shot at a CG shutout. Bailey blows the save and gets the win. That rule needs to be changed. They keep winning and Iggy keeps getting his hits. Nava is on track for a 20HR/100 rbi season. One of the most productive low salary players in baseball.
  4. Farrell needs a healthy Buchholz and a Lester on track to stay in the hunt. Lackey has been looking good lately, and Dempster has had his good games. Doubront is a guy who should be in the BP rather than wearing the BP out with his short starts. The rotation could use a transfusion. They need to get lucky with one of those prospects.
  5. The story of this 4 game series with the Orioles is Lester s***ing the bed again and Buchholz staying in bed. They can't win without Lester and Buchholz topping the rotation. Life is simple.
  6. How much damage before they finally make Tazawa the closer?
  7. The Jets are a confused, media-obsessed organization. They are a mess. Revis may never be the same player after blowing a knee, but he's gone so the star appeal is lost. You contrast the Jets to the lower key Giants, who are far more successful and have a much better organization. The Jets are the lesser team in NY, trying to make a lot of noise. Last year it was Tebow. Nothing so far this year.
  8. I like Tebow--for the same reasons Belichick mentioned in his news conference. He had a good rookie year in Denver. Damn good. But he isn't a classic drop-back, in the pocket QB, like his boss, John Elway, was. Maybe doesn't have the arm for it. So Elway let him go in favor of Peyton Manning. Not a bad switch, mind you. Belichick will play this kid to his talents. He has his Denver coach as his offensive coach, and you can see them develop a style for when he is needed. Brady is old, and could get injured at any time. Tebow could get his chance before you know it.
  9. Their rotation needs a transfusion. Either a trade for a Lee, or the emergence of one of their prospects. They are in the hunt, and can't afford to sit on those guys in Pawtucket at their leisure. They need to see what they can do. Or make a deal for a pitcher--before anybody else does.
  10. August? In this race, the leash is a lot shorter.
  11. Middlebrooks' stock is in decline, with Iggy and Bogaerts in the picture. He better get his act together soon. He isn't one of the "money" guys, and that makes him much more vulnerable in this organization. He could be trade bait at some point.
  12. Drew is sure handed enough, but he lacks range and speed. You want a guy like Iglesias in the middle, who can cover a lot more ground. It can make a difference in game situations.
  13. Are there more important considerations than winning? Sometimes it seems that way with this organization. They hold to certain beliefs which are hard to shake. One is to play the money. Farrell could help himself if he stretched his relievers out more, so he didn't run out of them at the end of games--especially extra inning games. This is a general problem in baseball, as relievers just aren't asked to pitch more than an inning or two. You need to have more long guys out there so you don't need to use your short guys every game. I heard some talk on MLB TV the whole pitch count paradigm is beginning to be questioned. Verducci has come out against pitch counts as presently used. Make that overused. You look at the performance of the Red Sox starters lately, and clearly there is need to upgrade. This division is tight, and every win counts. They need to add a starter soon by trade, or see what some of those hot prospects they are sitting on can do.
  14. Two solid starts in a row for Aceves in Boston--when they needed it. That gets him a first class ticket back to Pawtucket? Doubt it this time.
  15. I guess the warning sign about Ben is his passive demeanor. He's a guy who spent a lot of time in the middle of organizations until those above him were promoted or changed jobs. Henry lost several guys above him in his organization, and chose not to replace them. He let Ben float to the top. Hazen strikes me as the stronger personality, and he could well be running the show behind the scenes. The other thing is, from what I've read about him, Henry is also a quiet, passive type of guy. The anti-Steinbrenner. Not surprising that Henry let the organization get away from him.
  16. Yeah. What is there not to like about Farrell? Except that I thought he had resurrected Lester.
  17. Yeah, the media keeps harping on that. As if it meant that Iggy sucks as a hitter. It looks like he doesn't suck at all. He shows plate discipline that is bordering on Nava.
  18. Amazing how that 7 run rule seems to apply to all Red Sox managers. Years ago, a starter that didn't have it was gone before the game got out of hand. And they actually had relievers who pitched 3-4 innings.
  19. Must have caught Bailey disease.
  20. Lester shits the bed again. No ace there. While the media talks about Iggy vs Drew, the real Red Sox concern is their starting pitching.
  21. Yeah--when a guy is hot, you play him until he cools down. Then you give him a few days off, and bring him back. It's like horse racing. Horses run in peaks and valleys. Athletes, too. When they "valley", you rest them. Every manager should own a race horse. Or train one.
  22. They aren't going to send Iggy down. He's the first infielder off the bench. Besides, he hits much better in Boston than Pawtucket.
  23. Maybe another one of those kids who looks better upstairs. Looked good in the WBC. Wiil the love affair with Mortenson end? Will Tazawa become the closer?
  24. the folly of one pitcher per inning. you run out of bullpen fast.
