  1. The team should have sent him to Andrews for the 2nd opinion. They are paying for it. Seems like a lot of their organizational problems are related to the medical staff.
  2. If you follow the tweets, the Rangers deal for Garza was announced about 1 hr after the Andrews report on Buchholz was tweeted. It looks like the Cubs were waiting on the Buchholz situation, and the Red Sox decided to pass on Garza because of the Andrews report, saying Buchholz is OK to pitch. It's clear the Red Sox should have had a 2nd opinion on him a month ago, and he might have been pitching by now. Hard to understand what the holdup was. As it is, they may wind up doing nothing on the starting pitching by the deadline. More likely, they will get another reliever. Whether they have enough starting pitching to win the division is questionable.
  3. They are pulling games out of their asses, thanks to timely hitting and pitching. Playing guys out of position, having a kid like Iglesias hitting .400 while everybody says he can't hit (look at all those infield hits), having two closers go down with season-ending injuries, having their best starter sitting because he has a pain in his neck (which is a pain in the neck to everybody else), and having an inconsistent Lester and a consistently mediocre Dempster. Hopefully, in the next few days, the FO will come to realize that the team has the best record in Baseball, and that the future is now. Surprise. There is no "bridge year." Get some more pitching help, Ben. And cash in a few chips if necessary.
  4. That's because he thinks of those $13 million smackers he's making, and just smiles.
  5. Nap got them ahead, but can they stay ahead? The hitting is still sound, but the pitching is thin.
  6. You could see them pissing away this game not starting Lester. I just hope this is not the beginning of the end. They clearly are at a crisis point with their pitching.
  7. No mention, by the way, that Iglesias got a key hit the first game against the Yankees to make it a 2 run game in the 9th.
  8. Yeah. The media started carping about Iglesias' hitting again, as soon as he slid below .400. The kid is not allowed to cool off. They are overly focused on hitting at a time when it's the pitching that's the problem--and the defense backing the pitching. They are 2nd in the league in hitting and 7th in pitching--and dropping. Simple stats that tell the story.
  9. Cafardo just tweeted sources indicate Red Sox are showing increased interest in Garza. A rental makes sense for them. Forget about next year.
  10. The Rays have just swept the Jays in Toronto, and they are looking tough with Price back in form. The Red Sox are going to have to improve their pitching--with all the questions--if they are going to stay in this thing. No sense in wasting this year. The future is now.
  11. I'm thinking maybe they've changed their view on a rental. Garza vs Peavy. Peavy is more expensive and adds another year. Garza is a 2 month deal, which is what they need. The key is what they have to give up to get him. Maybe Hoyer and Cherington can figure something out. They don't really need another veteran starter beyond the next couple months. Garza fits. No doubt they are also after another reliever.
  12. The Rangers had Garza--and then they didn't. You wonder what the phone records of Hoyer and Cherington show the last day or so. It figures the Red Sox are going to do something, and Garza is probably cheaper than Peavy right now. Maybe he fits their short range needs better. No sense getting tied up with more Dempsters. Not with the prospects on the horizon. Regarding Sale, I read the White Sox said he is not for sale.
  13. Maybe Buchholz should try pitching with the discomfort, and see how it goes. The longer he waits, the longer it will take to get him back to the rotation.
  14. Maybe they'll get lucky and he'll suddenly decide to play, like Ortiz did in late April.
  15. Looks like they are going to have to pop the cork and trade prospects for pitching. Maybe a starter like Peavy and another reliever. Garza is back on the market but he's a rental. Peavy has another year on his contract at around $15mil. Either guy would help. I would not be surprised if Middlebrooks got traded for pitching. That might happen if they get Young for minor pieces. Maybe Middlebrooks in a package for Young and Lee if the Phillies decide to sell. This team has done well enough this season for Henry to gamble some money on them.
  16. Bradley would make a difference, but LF has been printed on his forehead.
  17. I see Buchholz is getting a second opinion. Could be an effort to undo the stalemate. Agreed about Pedey. His value is almost priceless.
  18. Big win for the Sox to open the stretch run.
  19. This Buchholz situation is very much like the Ortiz ordeal at the beginning of this season. Both players said they are hurting. The medical staff in each case said they can play without further damage. Both refuse to play. The Red Sox did nothing-- I guess giving the benefit of the doubt to the players. Papi came back to work when his salary was going to be affected by the time off the season. Buchholz doesn't have that problem.
  20. Garza talks with Rangers hit a snag. Translated, Hoyer got a phone call from Boston....
  21. On those that think some of those name prospects might go for pitching right now, I would say don't be surprised if it happens. Bailey may be the last straw.
  22. The pitching has reached a point where they might have to dig into the prospect pool to save the season. I don't know if they can afford to be typecasting their pitching prospects as starters or relievers at this point. They need help with both--especially relievers. They should ask themselves why all these guys are going down. OK, Miller was an accident--but the others are all arm or shoulder breakdowns. Mainly the bullpen.
  23. Their bullpen is thinning down fast, and they better do something more than Thornton or those two castoffs they just signed if they want to stay on top.
  24. I hear Buchholz didn't throw today, and his 2nd half availability is open to question. My feeling is they are on the fence right now with Garza--much of it related to Buchholz. They could blow this thing if Buchholz sits and they don't get Garza. Don't think they want that. The Rangers look more desperate about getting Garza with their starters down, but their prospects (e.g., Profar) aren't doing so well right now, so the Red Sox can outdo them if they want to. Plus you know Hoyer and Epstein will give Cherington every chance.
  25. You hope they don't compromise defense. Especially in LF and 3B. Gomes has a tendency to make plays look tougher. Kind of like Manny used to. Bradley is just waiting to take over. At 3B, they had a couple of late innings errors which affected two coast games, though they got some timely hitting from Snyder and Holt.
