  1. need a first baseman to replace Morales. Papi? Pujols? Cabrera? Papi, if you believe in Ponce De Leon.
  2. The instant replay really shows you the good umps and the bad umps. If MLB was serious about good umpires, they would use the instant replay as a tool to evaluate umpires. Maybe they do.
  3. If Papi has a big year, he'll want a 4 year contract for $50 mil. He won't get it in Boston, but that's what his agent will ask for.
  4. This defensive catcher business is overplayed, and masks the real problem that Red Sox pitchers haven't been holding the runners on--except recently, which has stopped the free-basing. I see VMart as adequate defensively, and the best hitting catcher after Mauer. I don't think a better defensive catcher who can't hit will be an improvement. Their problem is they are carrying Varitek, and that makes another catcher on the roster difficult. Especially with their fragile outfield.
  5. Hey, this team ain't dead yet. Papi looks like the old Papi, VMart is starting to hit, the pitching is coming around (they're even holding runners on) and Beltre is beltring (!) the ball. If they can get Ellsbury back, they'll be very competitive. Sweeping the Rays in TB? and 2/3 in Philly is impressive.
  6. They finally found a guy (Beltre) who can hit Garza. That's worth half of Beltre's salary. Papi is now hitting 3rd, and continues to amaze. Must be the water. Good to see McDonald is still around--with that broken down outfield. Somebody in the FO saw the light.
  7. Well, they made their first mistake in their sudden resurgence--DFAd McDonald. This was a stupid decision, created by their fetish for one reliever an inning. Now they want 12 pitchers! A starter goes 6 innings and 100+ pitches. Then bring on the crappy bullpen loaded with 50 cent relievers. Was it Buchholz who went 6 innings, threw 108 pitches and was taken out with a 6-1 lead yesterday? That sucks. The guy should have pitched the 7th inning. He was cruising. Any starter worth his salt should be able to go 120 pitches. So now they lose McDonald for a crappy reliever. A guy who has had some big hits and played a decent CF. Certainly a better ballplayer than Bill Hall. And then you have Ellsbury, Cameron and Drew--all of whom are prone to injuries, or just coming off injuries. A dumb move they will probably regret. If you took Youks and Pedroia away, this team would collapse like a house of cards.
  8. 2 out of 3 in Philly against the best team in the NL ain't bad. With Ellsbury back leading off and Papi hitting, this club could take off. It's still early.
  9. Hell of a talented ballplayer. Not very robust, but he has had a lot of big hits in Sept and October over the years. Tito has done an excellent job priming him for the late season. You want him healthy down the stretch.
  10. What a difference with Dice-K tonite from his last start. You could tell in the first couple of innings, the way he was mixing his pitches and getting them in the strike zone. His previous start, he was throwing only fastballs and missing the strike zone. Rollins was overheard early in the game in the Phillies dugout saying just wait him out, they'll take him out after 100 pitches. So that's the book on the Red Sox. 100 pitches and out. The downside of pitch counts.
  11. Papi looks like he switched his brand of cereal. He looks like the old hitter. Do you believe in miracles? I don't know. Maybe he borrowed some Kryptonite from Superman.
  12. The moves Epstein made pre-season work on paper. But they have yet to be proven on the field.
  13. This is a different team right now than during the season. I think they caught both Cleveland and Orlando off guard. Doc is using 3 bench players who are all playing well--Sheed,TA and Baby. KG has upped his game to close to the KG of old. Rondo has taken another step and is now regarded as a star. They have a lot of weapons they can throw at you in a game, and are focussed on defense and passing--like the Russell era Celtics. If they stay healthy and focussed, they have a good chance at another Championship. I don't see LA as good as Cleveland.
  14. Papi suddenly looks good again. Just keep your fingers crossed. If the guy gets back to .900+ OPS, you can bet they'll keep him another year.
  15. Beckett is a big reason this club is 5 games behind NY. Aces should pitch like aces-not asses. You could say the same for Papelbon.
  16. Love Tito leading off McDonald. The guy deserves it. Gets a stolen base.
  17. Yeah--the lineup has been impressive. Papi looks like a hitter again. Youks, VMart etc. They came back from that Papelbon disaster to win--shows some heart. Wonder what Tito would have done if Pap blew another? The answer would have come from the FO.
  18. Must be contagious on the left side of the infield. Scutaro isn't doing much defensively, either. The FO needs to figure out why this club is underachieving. Is it the injuries? Mental? Clubhouse issues?
  19. This team has a lot of issues. Aside from bad decisions about moving Ellsbury around and the Lowell dilemma, the management stood around while other teams stole bases at historic rates for the better part of a year. Funny how all that seems to have stopped lately. What's changed? Well, maybe the pitchers are now trying to hold the runners on--for a change. I can't believe ANY catcher is that bad. And then you have the pitching--which has been an embarrassment. There is no excuse for your best two pitchers starting poorly two years in a row. Strikes me as bad conditioning. You look at the Yankees and the Red Sox: right now, it looks like the Yankees have a much better run organization.
  20. One nail in the coffin last night. The players have got to be down after losing that one. I heard Papelbon threw 18 fastballs in a row. You got to be a little nuts if you think you can do that in Yankee stadium. Where is that pitching coach? If that's all he can throw, it's time for another closer.
  21. I can't see a more underachieving pitching staff in Baseball right now than the Red Sox. The FO must be going nuts. Harrell who?
  22. Papelbon is writing his ticket out of Boston.
  23. Clearly, the FO values people skills over everything else for a manager. Why else would they pick Tito? You give him a good team, and he stays out of the way and keeps the players happy. Great guy. Also great with the media. Papi, by the way, looks awfully good tonite against NY. That guy is a mystery. I do think the Red Sox are beginning to resemble a bunch of prima donnas, like some of the old teams. Except for Pedroia and Youkilis. There is altogether too much loyalty to individual players on this team. From Tito on up. It's a team game and it's about winning over everything else. Sometimes, you don't see that on the Red Sox.
  24. Johnny Sain was a pretty fair pitcher and maybe the best pitching coach ever. He was to the pitchers what Ted Williams was to the hitters--always preaching location.
