    Yeah..., I thought about Joe. He has a soft ML job now--I don't know if he'd want it--coming back against his old team. Torre was never successful managing until he came to the Yankees-- a good team. Kind of like Tito. I don't know if he's that much different from Tito.

    The Globe has dramatically changed its tone this morning.Even the sports editor, Joe Sullivan, is saying the Sox need a tougher manager. I hope that happens. I heard the name Bobby Valentine. I'm thinking Joe Maddon, after the Rays have been eased out of the playoffs. He is the guy best equipped to revive Crawford--and that will be a major priority next season. Don't know what his contract situation is in Tampa Bay. Seems like the media is pretty sure Francona is out. Option not renewed. The real question now is Epstein. Lucchino may cut him loose. But they have to have an equivalent type to replace him. Maybe Hoyer. Maybe Billy Beane, who has to be champing at the bit in Oakland. Or Brad Pitt, if Billy isn't available. What the hell. All the world's a stage.

    If they take a "circle the wagons" mentality, I doubt they can turn the team around.

    The manager has a history of repeatedly going to the trough with dead horses. In this case, the damage was monumental. Tito is also quite insensitive to criticism. In fact, he ignores it.

    I just saw a Globe poll of its readers: the vote to fire Epstein is 51-49. the vote to fire Francona is 30-70. 70% want Francona back? I guess in Boston nice guys are allowed to finish last. LOL.

    Gasper of the Globe has about the only non status quo column over there. He correctly says Tito is at fault for the "complacent culture" on the team. That's been evident for quite a while. Everybody in the media says "the biggest chokes in history, blah, blah, blah." A few say the management has to go. Much fewer in the Boston media. The players, of course, love Tito. He lets them do anything they want. Hell, he let Schilling throw 145 pitches in games at Philly. I don't like Epstein's slippery comments in that press conference. Everybody's to blame, but nobody's to blame, folks. I say fire Epstein, Tito and the whole coaching staff. And get a manager who's better organized and focussed on winning--the whole season. Epstein is beginning to look like a spoiled Ivy Leaguer.

    The whole coaching staff needs to go, manager on down. Especially Hale, Bogar and Young. If they could get Billy Beane or Hoyer for GM, I would say Theo, too. he has wasted a lot of money the past few years. These guys win a couple of championships and think they can coast for the rest of their careers. Look at what the Yankees did to Torre. What do you think the Steinbrenners would do if they owned the Red Sox? Don't ask.

    Crawford is a complex issue. He looks like he isn't playing with a great deal of confidence. Confidence is about 50% of performance in sports. So, what's the problem? I don't think any of us know. That will be an issue for the next manager.

    When a GM signs players who underperform, he blames the manager. You don't think he's going to blame himself, do you? It's ass-covering time.

    Tek, Drew, Wakefield, Lackey. Those guys have to disappear to make some roster space. I don't know if Youks can play 3B next year. He wasn't very durable there this year. That's a concern. Re-sign Paps? He wore down the last few games, but had a good season. Closers aren't worth big bucks, in my view. I think Papi is a goner. Trying to stretch that double last night was a sign these guys are on their own. It was not a smart move. He was right about Aceves, but didn't endear himself to management speaking out.He probably values himself much more than he is worth.My guess is Youks or Lavarnway assume the DH role. My guess Crawford isn't going anywhere, because there will be no takers for him. I also think another manager might be good for him--somebody who can utilize his speed better in the lineup. There is a decent chance he will come back to his career numbers. Ellsbury clearly has graduated from the leadoff role, so you might see him batting lower in the order, with Pedey or Crawford 1-2. Maybe Crawford-Pedey-Ellsbury.

    The odds don't mean much if you keep losing.

    Tough to say, since we don't know how much of a leader Tek has been the last couple years in the clubhouse. The media doesn't talk about stuff like that. I think it's evident there hasn't been much leadership among the players. Tek is still wearing the "C" but Pedroia is the obvious leader, if there is any. Maybe that tells you something about the clubhouse.

    I wouldn't put Francona in the same category as the others. He's only as good as the team he manages. That's his history dating back to the Phillies. And I don't know if he made the majors. He is very close to getting fired--depending on whether they make the playoffs. LaRussa and Cox have earned their stripes. Washington isn't there yet.

    Yeah--it's obvious the Sox have a management problem--not only on the field, but right up into the front office. Bad situation, because things probably aren't going to change. They are an insulated organization. The Boston media, for example, is in a state of denial about the poor management. The best thing that can happen is for them to miss the playoffs. They aren't going anywhere in the playoffs, anyways. Not without Youks and bad pitching. That would force management changes that are needed. The team looks tired and burned out. A month too soon. Lavernway looks strong--a breath of fresh air. Maybe they should have brought up the rest of Pawtucket.
