  1. looked like k3, ump.
  2. just don't groove it paps.
  3. who dat catcher? where the hell has he been all year, Theo?
  4. o-oh. seeing eye hits. the scourge of baseball.
  5. pap keeps throwing it in the same place, Marks keeps fouling it off.
  6. That ump sure is giving the outside corner. Shades of Glavine and Maddux.
  7. Pap got that pitch up and in. bad news.
  8. Pedey should have taken off sooner when Ortiz was at bat. They are not aggessive on the bases.
  9. Salty is pretty good defensively, and will get better. The guy is big and physical. Switch hitter with power both ways. He and Pedey have been the best hustlers on the team. He has worn down late in the season, but he will get better. Catching in Boston is tough--the pitchers don't hold runners on, and there's Wakefield to contend with.
  10. Get a dozen of Lavernway's rookie cards. This guy maybe the RHd power they've needed all season. There he is, folks, sitting in Pawtucket.
  11. One factor is how comfortable the Giants feel with a replacement for Lincecum. If they have a youngster in the minors ready to replace him, they might consider it. I don't know how the salaries match. That's another factor. Lincecum is farther along the salary scale. Ells is having a power breakout year. That doesn't mean he is going to be a 30HR 100 RBI power guy the rest of his career. Strange things have been known to happen in contract years.
  12. "Francoma". That expression has been used in chatgroups for years. Now, why do you think that is? Why is he called "Francoma"? I think a lot of people think he's a bit slow in game managing. Slow to react to situations. Also lacking in visible intensity. Has a tendency to give up too soon in games, and doesn't take the early season very seriously.
  13. Well, I think he did play baseball at Yale. His main experience before the Red Sox was as Lucchino's PR guy with the Padres. Public relations. He had no real experience with the technical side of baseball. But that's true of a lot of GMs--some of them work their way up as apprentices in the organization, delivering mail, for example. It has happened.
  14. I don't think that's written in stone. Ted Williams was a very good manager. At least in the beginning. He was MOY in Washington. He later had some problems in Texas, but that may have been due to disagreements with the FO. The vast majority of managers were ex-ballplayers--some good, some bad. Even Billy Beane was a major league player. Some of the best managers have been ex-major league catchers. Also shortstops. Fisk comes to mind (but he doesn't want to manage). Varitek. Shortstops: Bowa and Guillen. The Sox need a little more hot sauce in their managing, but Bowa and Guillen may be a little too hot for Boston.
  15. All those brainy ivy leaguers in the FO can see all the mistakes on the field. But they like Tito because he's good with the players and the media. But they will probably draw the line with collapses of this proportion. There isn't a lot of leadership in the dugout.
  16. I'm suspicious about Demarlo Hale, the guy that replaced Mills as the bench coach two years ago. I understand Mills was much more regimented than Tito in spring training. The bench coach does a lot more than fans realize.
  17. The Sox haven't had the leadership to get them out of this funk. Cripes, Tito's best shot was to have the players make out the lineup. Yikes.
  18. The difference here is a split vote. A pitcher vs 2 outfielders who will split the anti-pitcher vote.
  19. Ozzie Guillen was just let go by the White Sox. Ha. Ozzie is just about as opposite to Tito as you can get. He would shake the pillars of Fenway.
  20. When a lot of the players on a team underachieve, you have to point to the leadership. That's why when teams collapse, managers get replaced.
  21. Girardi's focus should be getting the Yankees ready for the playoffs. He should ignore the Rays vs Red Sox thing. His priority is with his team.
  22. Wish you would see these kind of insight in the local media. But you don't. Most are still defending Tito and "his" two championships.
  23. How do you know he has the green light? Besides, maybe he's colorblind.
  24. I don't think Theo and Tito are on the same page. I can't figure Crawford--another speedster is not exactly down Tito's alley. Looks like Theo was trying to make a speed team without a speed manager. How else can you explain Crawford not stealing the other night against NY with Pedey up? Crawford was good for 6 SBs per night against the Red Sox for Tampa Bay. He has 18 SBs total this year. If that isn't symptomatic of a problem on the Red Sox, nothing is. Epstein did not get his money's worth. And it has nothing to do with OBP, by the way. Crawford has never had a high OBP. Crawford was glued to 1B the other night when he should have taken off on the first or second pitch, as soon as he got on. That would not have happened in TB. Theo paid $20 million for a speed guy on a team that does not value speed, and is basically indifferent to holding runners on base to prevent steals. The team sucks on fundamentals.
