    You're obfuscating the whole story by calling anything aside from one play "tangental."

    "Can contribute." Of course. "Is the reason." Probably not. Usually it takes more than one play to lose a game. If the O's had scored 2 runs that inning, it would have also meant Barnes let up a dinger or put a lot more runners on. Would that have been Devers' fault too? Is it Devers' fault that hitters 3-5 went 0 for 13 and left runners on? Is it Devers' fault that Pedey hit into a clutch GDP? Devers and Benny were the only two Sox to get on base more than once. Is it Devers' fault the rest of the offense sleepwalked through the game? Bad plays contribute to losses. Bad plays can also be covered up by good plays. Barnes picked up Devers by getting the final out. Devers has picked up many others this season by having the highest OPS than any other Sox player that played last night.

    Even if he doesn't pick it, he can't let it get by him and allow the extra base. Devers does need more defensive work. From all I've heard, he's putting the time in. Moreland on the other hand doesn't give me much confidence that he can pick anything. If your 1B can't ever pick something in the dirt, you might as well just play Hanley there.

    It's very rarely "just one play" that causes a loss. But what about Bill Buckner? IT WASN'T BILL BUCKNER'S FAULT DAMNIT. THERE WAS A BUNCH OF OTHER s***** STUFF THAT HAPPENED TOO.
