    If you increase option years, it's more likely they will bring you up at some point. $500k to sit on the 40 man roster sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

    I don't understand. The Sox let Henry Owens go and no one batted an eye. I think Swihart is different because he showed a lot of potential in 2015 and then lost 2 years due to injury but is now languishing on the bench. If the Sox were able to stash him in Pawtucket, we'd never discuss him at all.

    This won't be his only appearance this year. I bet he gets a lot of run down the stretch. Could be a great guy out of the pen in Sept.

    @EvanDrellich Dustin Pedroia on his way back from Boston. Red Sox expect to know more about his situation later today. Cora said Pedroia had a full work-up. Mookie Betts doing tee work today. They’ll see how he comes out of that.

    He was ok in 2014, but that's when his slide into mediocrity started. He's overpaid as a 2 win player for 2015 and 2017 IMO.

    And the more I read, the more confusing it gets. I see numerous reports that the Sox only bid 40M on Abreu, which was clearly not going to get it done. It's just a PR move to say that you bid for him at that point. However, the following summer when the Sox were sucking wind, FO reported that the Sox were only $5M off the final bid (which would have been $63M, not $40M).

    That's all I was saying with my original post about his 5.9 dWAR. He wasn't the worst defensive catcher by that metric. Maybe DRS or whatever have their own faults? I watched Swihart that year and he looked passable. He wasn't great, but I've seen a whole lot worse.
