  1. Fangraph prospect notes from last year: German was a solid middle-round college pitching prospect going into the 2018 draft, with most clubs treating him as a sixth to eighth round talent who could possibly be a target for the 11th-12th rounds and a $125,000 bonus, as cheap senior signs fill in the latter stages of the top 10 rounds. Then German (Dominican-born and whose name is pronounced like the European country) had one of the latest pre-draft velo spikes possible, suddenly hitting 95 mph during the Atlantic Sun conference tournament in his final college game just two weeks before Day One. Miles per hour are a dime a dozen these days, but German had the athleticism and arm action of a starter and had put on about 15 pounds in the previous 12 months, so some thought this could be coming. Clubs who had scouts at that final start shot him up their boards, and the Yankees jumped to the front of the line to take him in the fourth round. The velo spike held throughout German’s first summer in pro ball — he sat 92-95 and touched 97 mph in the fall instructional league, and put on about 10 additional pounds after signing — and then moved yet another tick last year — 93-96, touch 98 — even though German is still starting. The length of his arm action and the gap between where his secondary stuff is (German’s college breaking ball was scrapped, and his changeup is now his best secondary) and what it’d have to be to play several times through the order means German is likely a fastball-heavy reliever.
  2. https://twitter.com/redsoxstats/status/1353777621956501507 Interesting video of Ottavino giving up bombs last year.
  3. Seems to be. They should have wanted to though.
  4. They still need pitching depth. Makes no sense to move Whitlock back.
  5. 375 BABIP 3.52 FIP Per SIERA and xFIP, he was better in 2020 than 2019.
  6. Kiké hits RH too.
  7. Even Yairo Munoz hits RH.
  8. All RHB. Where's the LHB for Renfroe to platoon with?
  9. BTV is just a toy. You can't just look at Ottavino like he has zero value. If he has an average Ottavino year, he'll be the best guy in the pen.
  10. We all remember the Mike Stanley trade 23+ years ago.
  11. @JonHeyman Red Sox, making some nice moves the last few days, are still playing for JBJ. Mets, others in, too. Trade Beni to clear space for JBJ.
  12. That trash (at his worst) is better than most of the current Sox bullpen.
  13. Your welcome. That concludes my Ted talk about John Henry having enough money that Devers/Bogey/Betts should have spent their whole careers in BOS.
  14. @redsoxpayroll Adding Ottovino's $9MM AAV takes Boston payroll to ~$205.17MM. $4.83MM away from the first tax line.
  15. Pedroia, Marcus Wilson, Walden
  16. If they didn't re-sign Eovaldi, they would have kept Mookie. Honestly though, they should have just kept Mookie and reset later on.
  17. 1. Sox needed a closer. 2. Sox needed more farm arms. 3. Yankees wanted to save $$$. Seems like a good move for both teams? I'd probably rather have Ottavino than the guys left in FA.
  18. @PeteAbe Red Sox have yet to put Perez or Richards (or Hernandez - ed) on the 40. Now Ottavino joins the list. So more moves to come. They're at 39.
  19. 4D chess!
  20. Put BTV down. It's giving you brain damage.
  21. @MikeMonaco_ Adam Ottavino • HS in Brooklyn, college @GoNUbaseball • 1st-rounder 2006 • 2013-2019: 2.90 ERA, 378 IP, 459 K • 2020: Take out 1 bad outing in Buffalo, and he had a 2.95 ERA the rest of the season
  22. @Joelsherman1 Frank German was ranked the #Yankees 24th best prospect by http://MLB.com. The RHP was the sweetener to get Bos to take back Ottavino’ contract. They essentially are buying a prospect to some degree.
  23. Joelsherman1 Prospect going to the #RedSox from the #Yankees is Frank German
  24. No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition.
