  3. I need to relitigate if they took too long to DFA Hanley Ramirez.
  4. A better plan would have been someone that could have rotated between 1B/OF in a platoon if something failed. Schwarber was apparently too expensive/long term. They were correct in not signing Brad Miller, who seemed like a Bloom guy. Joc got 6M to be a platoon bat, could that have worked at 1b short term?
  5. Yes, DD was/is a good GM. Bloom seems to be a good one as well. They just have two different philosophies. DD cares about the MLB squad at the expense of the rest of the system. Bloom cares about the whole organization and wants to supplement the MLB squad from the farm, not just through FA/trades. DD chose right in keeping Raffy over Moncada/Kopech. Even the Kimbrel trade, while probably too heavy in prospects, didn't really come back to bite the Sox. Aside from the Thornburg trade, he did a pretty good job.
  6. It prevents 2 slots being filled at high dollar from FA. Bloom has only signed one high dollar guy. If he retains Xander and extends Raffy, that doesn't mean he won't bring in other guys, they'll just be much cheaper than $20M JD. With the pitching depth in the upper minors, maybe they are planning on using the farm rather than FA to supplement the MLB squad. If that's the plan, I'm ok with it. Same with the bullpen. The FA market isn't that great this year anyway.
  7. What was the 2022 plan? They brought a short term 1B in? Shaw? When Shaw failed, what was the backup? Shaw had been s*** for a few years so it would have been reasonable to expect him to flame out again.
  8. At the end of 2020.
  9. Yes, Coffey was rising right before the draft and it's not shown in national rankings, similar to how Romero was showing late power that started pushing him up late. Each team has their own scouts and their own draft strategy. I just can't say that Keith Law could compete with the Sox one on one if it came down to it. I bet Bloom's board year over year would be better than Law's.
  10. Number of real-life trades: 345 Number of those trades accepted by our model: 327 Acceptance rate: 94.8% Average margin of error: 1.7 And here are the records of a few recent trades that our model got right: Craig Kimbrel to the Dodgers Matt Olson to the Braves Mitch Garver to the Rangers Max Scherzer, Trea Turner to the Dodgers Kris Bryant to the Giants Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy to the Phillies Javier Baez to the Mets Francisco Lindor to the Mets Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals Lance Lynn to the White Sox Nate Lowe to the Rangers Blake Snell to the Padres Jameson Taillon to the Yankees Steven Matz to the Blue Jays Jeff Hoffman to the Reds It would be interesting to have them explain trades they got wrong and why.

  12. https://twitter.com/fangraphs/status/1550465847650656259 In a race for a playoff spot, every edge matters. Yet all too often, for reasons that extend beyond a player’s statistics, managers and general managers fail to make the moves that could improve their teams, allowing subpar production to fester at the risk of smothering a club’s postseason hopes. Red Sox After a tantalizing 23-game debut in 2020, Bobby Dalbec was subpar last year, hitting the ball very hard but striking out 34.4% of the time (second among all players with at least 400 PA) and finishing with a 107 wRC+ and 0.5 WAR. Even that version of Dalbec would be an improvement upon the current one, however. The 27-year-old is hitting .205/.286/.344 (76 wRC+) with a 31.3% strikeout rate and a barrel rate that’s dropped by more than half relative to last year (from 20.2% to 9.5%). Lately, he’s been serving as the short half of a platoon with Franchy Cordero, who himself has been pretty bad (.225/.299/.372, 87 wRC+) while striking out 32.4% of the time. The Red Sox do have a first baseman of the future in 6-foot-5 lefty Tristan Casas, who topped the team’s prospect list and was 16th on our Top 100 heading into the season (he’s currently ranked 15th overall). Armed with a more mature approach at the plate and better contact skills than Dalbec, he wasn’t exactly lighting up the International League (.248/.359/.457) before suffering a right ankle sprain on May 17. After making a four-game rehab stint in the Florida Complex League last week, he’s likely to rejoin Triple-A Worcester this weekend. It’s asking too much for him to step into the big club’s job so soon, and so the team, which has gone just 5-12 in July after a 20-6 June, will need additional help. The Nationals’ Josh Bell and the Marlins’ Jesús Aguilar are both pending free agents who could fit, as could the Marlins’ Garrett Cooper, who has an additional year of club control and could also help in right field, where the team is below replacement level as well. Dalbec was the leading photo of the story.
  13. Kavadas is going to be in Portland by the end of the year. Does he start knocking on the door of the top 10? Dude just mashes.
  14. I'm fine with an expanded roster to 30. Just limit that total amount of pitchers that can go or the amount of pitchers that can be used per 9 inning game.
  15. If they are replacing Xander/Betts with Soto, ok. They still have to keep Raffy though.
  16. Maybe not for 2023, but one of those is probably in his future. Casas 1B Story 2B Mayer SS Devers 3B Bleis RF Rafaela CF Xander LF
  17. Untrue. Take JD and Eovaldi's money and split it between Xander and Raffy. It's not hard math.
  18. JD and Eovaldi coming off the books also allows for Raffy extension. Bogey would only be getting a 5-10M raise. The rest goes to Raffy. Nate can be replaced in house. JD can be replaced by a much cheaper bat as his DH-only contract was ridiculously inflated. Guys like Cron/Mancini make 7AAV and actually play a position. JD makes 3 times that much and sits on the bench for half the game. It doesn't make sense to spend 20M on a DH anymore.
  19. In retrospect, I'm glad he came to the Sox. It was nice to see the FO get depantsed like that with: 1. dumb panda hats 2. a broken belt buckle 3. a player that had previous weight/health concerns that were already blasted to the media 4. "a proven postseason performer"
  20. Reading is hard for NY fans.
  21. Yeah, because HE CAN STILL AFFORD XANDER. JD AND EOVALDI ARE COMING OFF THE BOOKS.
  22. IDK, the highlight of Roman hitting a 450' bomb in Coors with a wood bat got me pretty excited. Helped that he also signed almost immediately.
  23. Some of you have proposed MORE doubleheaders.
  24. This is getting out of hand! Now there are two of them!?!
