  1. Tomase really needs to be given a swirlie every time he walks into Fenway.
  2. @tylermilliken_ Red Sox farm system rankings over the last few years: @BaseballAmerica : 2020 - 23 2021 - 20 2022 - 11 Mid-2022 - 11 @MLBPipeline 2020: 25 2021: 24 2022 - 14 Mid-2022: 11 @keithlaw 2020 - 25 2021 - 20 2022 - 20 2023 - 23 @fangraphs ranked the Red Sox 9th at the end of 2022. Law is the outlier. Whether or not the system is 11th or better is up for debate. However, the system is in much better shape than it was back in 2020.
  3. For 2.5 years of Mookie, sure!
  4. So if Bloom's trade was Gray, May, Downs and Wong, most of the pundits would have lauded the trade. As of today, is that still a good enough return? They would have still been terrible in 2020 and 2022 and would have been worse off in 2021. All you have out of the deal is an injured Dustin May and another starter who is worse than Pivetta.
  5. When I read a lot of the evaluations on the Mookie trade the grades basically said "the return is fine if the Sox weren't planning on competing, but this is the Boston Red Sox." If it was the 2022 Cubs or Nationals making the same trade, they probably get a higher grade. Regardless, I agree that return just doesn't feel like it was enough NO MATTER WHAT. I said it at the time too. I wanted them to sign Mookie for whatever it took. It should have been Mookie and Devers and let Xander walk.
  6. Also, let's revisit the Soto trade in a few years and see where those guys wind up.
  7. At the time, Verdugo was a decent piece. Age 23: 2 fWAR (prior to the trade) Age 24: 1.9 fWAR (prorated 5.4 for COVID season) If Verdugo has a 4 fWAR season this year and next, does it help at all? Downs was a highly rated prospect. He just flamed out.
  8. It was disgraceful for them to let him go no matter what. People can bicker about the return, he should have retired in a Sox jersey. Whether it was Henry being too cheap to keep him around or the other contracts getting in the way, it's just not fair.
  9. Soto was traded for 2.5 years, during a pennant chase. Mookie was traded for 1 year. That's an amazingly huge difference.
  10. I had felt so sorry for that franchise after all those chants of "19-88" over and over at each away game. So sad for them.
  11. I don't believe this is the case at all. Please provide supporting evidence.
  12. But have I told you the tale of Jeter Downs?
  13. Catchers take a while to develop. Word is that he's a lot better behind the plate now and can stick there long term. His bat still has upside. Could he be a starter? Sure. I think it's more likely that Brannon, Hickey or someone else is the future Sox starter there.
  14. https://beyondthemonster.substack.com/p/can-the-red-sox-rely-on-alex-verdugo A long feature on the issue of Verdugo's defense. Frankly, I think he's not going to be very good in RF even if he gets consistent reps out there. Year by year he's gotten slower. The plays he was noted as earning "5 stars" for were kind of embarrassing TBH. My guess is that he'll be below zero for OAA and DRS in RF. He might not be a disaster, but I'd expect like -3DRS and -2OAA. UZR/150 should be closer to zero than the -17 he had in RF last season.
  15. Because of his name, his history or his arm?
  16. @BillKoch25 Red Sox had previously announced 11 other non-roster invitees to spring training: - Ps Matt Dermody, Norwith Gudino, Oddanier Mosqueda, Ryan Sherriff - Cs Jorge Alfaro, Caleb Hamilton, Ronaldo Hernández - OFs Greg Allen, Narciso Crook, Raimel Tapia - INF/OF Niko Goodrum This group should have more impact on the MLB roster this season IMO.
  17. @jcmccaffrey Red Sox announce 10 non-roster invitees to big league camp: RHPs Dan Altavilla, Taylor Broadway, Durbin Feltman, Victor Santos and Chase Shugart INFs Christian Koss and Matthew Lugo INF/OFs Ryan Fitzgerald and Nick Sogard C Stephen Scott Aside from Scott and Lugo, doesn't seem like anyone else interesting in this group. I believe other NRI's have already been announced.
  18. Well, the return on the Beni deal could have been worse. @NBCSEdgeBB Report: Khalil Lee accused of domestic abuse
  19. No, we have standards here...
  20. I think his defense is good at SS, but I think his defense is elite in CF. I'm not sure he has GG SS defense.
  21. I don't think the Sox see him as an everyday player.
  22. I love this comment especially: "all the rookies transition into good big leaguers without painful adjustments." There are 3 rookies listed with one being a backup catcher and another being a 29 year old from overseas that the Sox have scouted for and drooled over for years.
  23. That damn CRACK medical staff.
