  1. I think they've given opt outs to lots of guys they weren't really serious about. At the very least, it's competition for Wong and McGuire and forces them to come in and earn their spot. Sox are very weak at the upper levels at C.
  2. Everyone always wants to be right. As long as the Sox win, it shouldn't matter which argument was right. None of us actually make the decisions.
  3. I guess it would depend on if there is a deep discount on their contracts or not. Are they going to go with the 14 pitchers/12 hitters again early on or was that just due to the lockout last season? Diaz might make sense if they think they only want a SS for a really short time and then will pass him through waivers. Goodrum can actually hit, so is more likely to get claimed. I believe Diaz is a good fielder but it would be an upgrade if he was given a noodle bat. Honestly, I don't want them to call up Edwin at all, because there are far too many Edwin Diazes that have played professionally and it's a real pain to pull up his FanGraphs page.
  4. It's our specialization.
  5. He's NOT a lock for sure. It's between one of the OF guys (Tapia, Allen or some other guy), Alfaro and Goodrum. That's what I said yesterday.
  6. Agreed. Unfortunately, he's going to be getting most of his at bats in the WBC it seems like.
  7. It's 2/10 and they haven't even put Story on the 60 day IL. A lot can change in the next 45 days.
  8. Some people really preferred those injury risks to Sale, Paxton and Kluber. Out of those 6 names, Kluber is probably the most certain to be healthy.
  9. They will say "the starting rotation is worse and the offense is worse."
  10. He has a nice swing for sure. He has a good approach. We'll have to see if he can hold his own against more advanced pitching. https://twitter.com/ObstructView/status/1623720198191648768
  11. Niko Goodrum is an actual SS. Arroyo has barely played SS since 2017.
  12. @SmittyOnMLB Red Sox projected for last in AL East, according to ZiPS Projected Standings
  13. If the season started today and the 40 man was full, yes.
  14. Nobody expects him to be an ace. There is no "ace" on this staff. This isn't a team built for a deep postseason run.
  15. If healthy, they should be pretty good. They've always been decent starting pitchers when healthy.
  16. @redsoxstats FanGraphs' initial power rankings have the Red Sox 14th overall. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/fangraphs-power-rankings-spring-training-edition/ No team’s roster feels as volatile as Boston’s. If everything works out right, the Red Sox could give the Rays and Blue Jays a serious fight behind the Yankees. Maybe all their health question marks turn out to be fine, Masataka Yoshida makes a seamless transition stateside, their veterans fight off decline for another year, and their youngsters take a major step forward. But there are so many ways that things could fall apart, and too many of those scenarios would have disastrous cascading effects across their roster. Threading the needle should be compelling to watch for outsiders and completely heartrending for fans in Boston. Compares Sox to Angels and Rangers. Projected record 82-80.
  17. For Dalbec to be on the roster, I think there would have to be an injury to Casas, Turner or Devers. He's better suited to working on Corner OF defense in AAA IMO.
  18. That's not really saying much. The Sox rotation is on the older side this season.
  19. "It's going to be awesome."
  20. Makes "a little sense" is not the same as makes "little sense."
  21. Dalbec is NOT a viable 2B/SS.
  22. Dalbec was used in MIF because of a lack of options. They have many 2B options, just not good SS options right now. Dalbec is most certainly fodder for AAA. Valdez makes a little sense as he's a left handed bat. Maybe if he has a strong ST? That's why I wonder if they hold off on adding someone to the 40 man.
  23. The law of averages may want to spite Bloom again this year after flying too close to the sun in 2021.
  24. Barnum and Bailey, Big Apple, Cirque du Soleil or Garden Bros? A circus can be fun, interesting or absolutely cruel and horrible.
  25. Kiké and Mondessi are the 2 best options for SS. Rafaela won't be rushed. I'm not sure how much 1B Valdez has played or if the club has any idea where to put him. Hamilton can fake it at SS, but really is a 2B. He will probably get substantial OF reps in ST too. Koss is decent at SS in a pinch. I don't think his bat would do anything in MLB though.
