When you get him out of the sports radio sphere, he has a good baseball brain. The guys that can talk baseball the best are typically the scrappy utility types like Merloni. I can see how it would take a while for him to catch on. Jerry Remy wasn't a polished product on day one either.

My comment is not off the mark. Bello may start the season on the IL even if his arm is fine. Mata might not be on the MLB roster even if he's ready. There are lots of variables in play. Bello would be a starter. Mata would most likely be a reliever. I'm not sure how you can really compare the output of the two guys without looking at everything. I guess the conversation you want to have is "I like this guy, do you like this guy too?" Have at it.

Price's contract would end a year earlier and the Sox would only be dealing for low level, low ceiling prospects.

Something that is completely made up and has no basis in reality. Great for discussion on here because there would be no right or wrong answer and would theoretically turn into just another shouting match! Maybe already heading in that direction!!!

Whitlock was still recovering from surgery. They took additional precautions with Bello when he had forearm strain. I'm fine with that! Paxton is perpetually injured. Hard to blame the Sox for Paxton straining his hamstring.

Even if he's at 100%, he'll be 100% on the IL and Mata will be 100% in AAA.

At his age? Ryu was a year younger and got a 4x80 that offseason. He wasn't the picture of health either.

Unless they refuse to take him back, which has happened from what I saw when reviewing Rule 5 transactions.

No. The team that claims him off waivers gets the Rule 5 restrictions as well.

I don't think the Sox CAN trade with that team unless they are going to put him on the active roster. I'm not sure they can even do that without subjecting him to waivers. Typically, if there is a trade, it's the Sox trading the Rule 5 rights TO the Phillies so that the Phillies can get Song into their minors.

Since he hasn't pitched in a game this spring, he would probably clear waivers again. It's one thing if he could actively help a team. It's another if you're going to fight an IL stint all year. Sox should probably put up a fight once the season starts.

And that stuff is kinda dumb. You can have a reasonable discussion without turning into sports radio brain. Yes, trying to minimize payroll costs and maximizing talent is good! Artificially suppressing salaries through a system where 1/3 of the owners don't even want to compete is bad!

I disagree. He cares about the money that comes in. He doesn't say jack s*** about the lowly billionaires who own the Pirates, Reds, A's, Marlins and other teams who don't spend on their teams, but take hundreds of millions each year in shared revenue (through tv and corporate shakedowns). Steve Cohen comes in and Henry can't stop bitching about it. The problem with baseball isn't the Mets... Unless you're John Henry, because the Mets will make Henry spend more money. The bad teams that don't spend on their players won't force Henry to increase his payroll, but other rich guys will.

This was 20+ years ago. Back then he sat in the box seats and would talk with fans. Now he sits back where us peons no longer have access to him. Like I said, Henry is insulated "these days." Part of the insulation is that others in management realize he has foot in mouth disease and they want to keep him away from everyone else as much as possible (see his comments and lack thereof at the winter weekend). There's a reason he did the interviews by email and not by phone or in person.

Henry is pretty insulated these days. I don't think he really worries about the fans at this point.

To put him on the 26 man roster? The only way the Sox get him back is if he's put through waivers and every other team has the chance to Rule 5 "pick" him again.

Considering the FA prices, he's a steal even if he's a solid late inning guy.

I'm not sure Henry is making a bad business decision. His decision is based purely on business and the bottom line. I think he'd rather have a more Operating Net Income from year to year than worry about truly winning another championship. The shill you speak of would be the corporate mouthpiece Sam Kennedy.

They were willing to eat 1/2 of Price's contract. He was coming off a 2 fWAR season in 2019. At that point, he's theoretically worth $16M to a team. If you are willing to pay half of his salary, he is clearly worth something in return, even if it's just for some lower end prospects.
