  1. I would literally walk away from baseball forever if Schilling gets busted for steroid or HGH. The guy was the reason I came back in the first place after finally having enough of the futility of it all in the 90's.
  2. There has been no incidation whatsoever or any suspicion I have ever heard that Pedro Martinez used steroids.
  3. I have my suspicions about Bernie's partial comeback in '06 for that matter.
  4. Yankee fans expecting a big blowup over this are going to be disappointed. I think we always sort of had a hunch that he might have done steroids or HGH or something during his peak years of 2003-2007. There are only two members of the 2004 team who would kill me if they ever tested positive. One is Pedro. The other is Schilling. Everyone else, you just shrug your shoulders and say that's the era it was.
  5. I love Big Papi but if I had to count the things weighing him down, his mind would be low on the list.
  6. The problem with that theory is timing, Gom. Even with steroids the strength doesn't come overnight. it takes a long term consistent use of steroids or HGH to get a significant benefit. That's why I can't believe people like A-rod when they said they only did it a little. You don't do steroids just a little.
  7. He needs to get back on it.
  8. All for it. At his worst Rios is still a capable 4th OF. At best he's a potential superstar. Next year we slide Drew to left to reduce wear and tear and play Rios in right with Baldelli on the bench and Reddick in the wings (unless he's traded) waiting to take over if it all falls apart. Sounds like a plan to me.
  9. Because some people have a thing against swapping quality for quantity and others can't let the long shot go. There's always a thought that as long as you have a few truly talented players on the team the rest of the team might just hold it together for a year and put you in the playoffs.
  10. That was... kinda my point. Greinke and Gonzalez are in similar situations, great players on very bad teams that are unlikely to be moved in the immediate future.
  11. Might as well talk about trading for Zach Greinke because we need to stabilize our rotation. Wouldn't half love it but it's unlikely to happen this year. Now a trade for Gil Meche on the other hand... maybe that could get done.
  12. That's the beauty of a thread like this. It doesn't have to.
  13. Papi is a concern, but he isn't a "problem." By which I mean, his skills are declining but he's not making a fuss in the clubhouse or putting up issues if Tito decides to sit him for a game.
  14. Actually Epstein has come down with something at the deadline every year except for 2006 if I recall correctly. In 2004 we had the Nomar trade, I believe we got Graffanino in 2005, in 2006 all we got was Bryan Corey. The Gagne fiasco hampered us in 2007, and in 2008, we said hello to Bay. That said, Andy LaRoche could easily be seen as our "deadline" acquisition this year.

  16. It's not assassination if the guy is out there committing character seppuku.
  17. I think that's his way of saying "NFW, not to you."
  18. It's still more than a strikeout an inning.
  19. Ricciardi is actually crazy enough to think we'll deal an established, veteran Lester for Halladay when we wouldn't deal a young, unproven Lester for Johan Santana? Pass. And then some. Message is clear: If I'm going to deal in division I will be compensated for the aggrivation of seeing a favorite play for a rival
  20. The difference is that if the Yankees deal for Halladay they actually have to mortgage their future. We can deal for Halladay and still keep a reasonable cadre of prospects around. At the moment, Halladay would just replace what they usually get from Chien-Ming Wang. They're basically looking for a blockbuster to replace attrition rather than to objectively improve.
  21. Frankly, if you don't have the prior 3 years to compare, Papelbon's 2009 is still a well above average season for a relief pitcher. I'm not too worried about Paps long term, at least not yet. He's still pitching well enough to close for Boston, it's just that he's not out of this world awesome anymore.
  22. The only youngsters I would really cringe if we lost at the deadline are Dan Bard and Josh Reddick. Everyone else is pretty easily replaceable in this system and therefore spendable to bring in the big player we feel we need.. And I'd only worry about Reddick because of the combination of Drew's health and Bay's contract. He may be needed here within the next 2 years.
  23. Just about the last guy i would ever think of as openly criticizing one of his own players is Tito Francona. He came as close as maybe Tito ever will to throwing one of his own guys under the buss there.
