  1. Heck of a duel between Kershaw and Weaver. Just the kind of baseball you love to watch as a neutral fan.
  2. This kid is good, and getting better. I'm glad he's had some softish lineups to get used to the league on, and I hope he can stay effective against the best lineups. It's easy to see over the last couple games why the kid was so highly rated. One more good start and it's time to start thinking dangerous thoughts about next year.
  3. Sctuaro is still hurt, and has little backup. I dunno about Reyes, but we need a true shortstop, and Scoot's a glorified utility guy.
  4. You're ignoring the way this front office has historically looked at AA and AAA. Generally speaking they tend to feel that if you're ready to be promoted to AAA, unless you show something that makes them nervous, you're probably ready to be a big leaguer. Is it really that unfathomable that a guy like Lin could come up and hit .270 with a bit of OBP (.330-.340) and no power? Because that's all that it would take to seriously upgrade our RHH outfields situation. Add in the speed factor and the defense factor and that's really not a bad bench outfielder at all. And the fact is that the guy is 22, he's not built like a twinkie. He's got some room to fill out and add a bit of gap power. If that doesn't happen he's still a fairly tough out and can at least slap the ball over the third baseman's head. If his discipline continues strong... well, the ability to see the ball very well has a lot to do with where Youk's power seems to have come from (we hope). So a bit of gap-and-run slugging isn't infeasible. No one is nominating Lin for next year's all star team. But a singles hitter who can walk and can work the count, and has speed, and can defend, doesn't need to do a lot else to be a useful big leaguer. That's all.
  5. I agree. Demoting him and letting him get a groove against AA pitching might be the right move to shake him out of his slump.
  6. Should we do a deal for Melky Cabrera? Plays all 3 OF spots, switch hits, does some damage against LHP?
  7. Well don't look at me, I wanted Daniel Nava to replace him. THat would have been an all-around fail move. Our best internal option is Che-Hsuan Lin. Righthanded outfielders just don't happen very often.
  8. Why does this thread get topped? This board is light enough trafficwise that we can go ahead and start new threadsa for new conversation points, and megathreading is lame unless it's absolutely necessary to keep a site running smoothly.
  9. Montero is a DH of the future, don't kid yourself. His extreme ceiling is Mike Piazza. Defensively. Not that Lavs is really a lot better, but seriously, Jacko. Montero's going to look a lot better when the Yankees decide to quit crowding him into a position he's not suited for.
  10. Nopt sure I agree that Reyes is cheaper. Hanley has more contract value, and the Marlins are going to bargain on that basis.
  11. That's funny, Lavarnway's issue is also blocking ability, but he can at least throw the ball 120 feet accurately enough to catch AAA speedsters. Montero? Can't.
  12. He's Tim Naehring. On the rare moments when he's actually in the lineup, he's a darn good player. Just take him on that basis.
  13. Meh, he's a DH, Montero's a DH, they're both pretending to be catchers, I call same difference. At least Lavs actually has something attached to his right shoulder. I believe it's commonly referred to as an "arm." Sorry, what dod you say?
  14. An NL team isn't going to take this guy cheap? The Cubs aren't going to take this guy cheap? You can get him off the roster in a freaking heartbeat. Some guys just can't handle the AL East. This is a flyball pitcher used to pitching in Western ballparks, there were a billion warning signs. Don't tell me there wasn't contingency plans to get him out of here.
  15. More seriously, Che-Hsuan Lin is absolutely underrated around here. There is no power, and there probably never will be but he has elite speed and very good plate discipline, along with elite level D. A guy who can get on base, run once he gets there, and play at a high level defensively is a darn good 4th outfield package. A team that didn't have Ellsbury would give a Lin type a good look at leadoff in a couple years, just to see if he can put that skillset together at the big league level a la Brett Gardner. I honestly think his upside is at least a good bench tweener, and if that OBP holds, he's an average or better leadoff man and starting center fielder. But that's a thing for another thread.
  16. The only Hanley to Boston rumors I've ever heard came from Red Sox fans and the occasional Red Sox beat writers. It's a one way thing. It's not happening. Forget it. The Fish are going to keep Hanley at least until the new ballpark and see if he's useful as a draw. If he isn't, then he's out there with 2 years left on the deal, which is about right for a long phase of shopping the guy -- Adrian Gonzalez long in all probability. We certainly are not going to snap him up this offseason much less this deadline. There is no way the price makes sense for both clubs. Let's not forget that the Miguel Cabrera trade was an unmitigated fiasco for the Marlins. They aren't going to be anxious to deal a still-young baseball prodigy for anything but a sure thing, which we just don't have. Oh, and which would you guys have up here right now, Lin or Cameron? At least Lin can defend. At least there's some justification for my Reyes fixation, considering the Mets are hard up financially, would lose Reyes anyway, and might appreciate a chance to acquire a replacement or get something more than a couple picks. The Fish just don't have that kind of urgency, even if he isn't great right now (from their perspective, why sell low?)
  17. http://www.roflcorner.com/wp-content/gallery/facepalm/jesus-facepalm-facepalm-jesus-epic-demotivational-poster-1218659828.jpg
  18. Meh at least last year you could point to 15 years... but this year he's been totally wretched.
  19. That's your Derek Lowe Face moment. Alas and aLackey. If we want to win we can't keep carrying this guy, I'm sorry. Phantom DL and see ya next year.
  20. Waive Lakcey, call up Doubront. Now. Please.
  21. You can't just pretend these last couple months came out of nowhere. They happened.
  22. And we want this guy because... Look, if we want a guy who hits to a .600 OPS we'll stick with Scutaro. This is about an over the top piece. Not a reclamation deal.
  23. He needs to be adjusted to the National League. Get rid of him. He is a bust.
  24. Thank you for amply demonstrating why Hanley is A: less likely to be available and B: likely to cost far more in talent.
  25. Because he makes a whopping $5M less? Because he's not going to want to get paid like a superstar? Could you try making a little sense here?
