  1. If you think all steroids and HGH affected was loft on the ball, you're mistaken. It's all about recovering from the stress of the game in time for the next one.
  2. I know, but when they figure out a test for what he's on at the moment, that changes pretty quick.
  3. You have to throw a bit of "for a catcher" around for a guy like Fed but he's starting to show something with his bat, enough so to be interesting. The glove really isn't in question, so to see the kid hitting is encouraging. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=C&sid=t546&t=p_pbp&pid=543148 I don't think this guy will be a good enough bat to play starting catcher for the Red Sox, I see him more as one of those jourmeymen who start for bad teams and back up for good teams on the back of his glove.
  4. I wouldn't assume Papi's gone next year. I suspect we call up Lavarnway next year and have him play a role as second catcher and DH platoon with Ortiz
  5. You'll never stop fans from making excuses for their favorites. As long as the players themselves don't make them that's good enough IMHO.
  6. Francoeur? That's interesting, and a possibility. too freaking inconsistent though. I wouldn't touch him as more than a really good 4th OF and RH bat off the bench. A Reddick-Francoeur platoon in rightfield would be quite interesting.
  7. I get the sense that Beltran isn't walking through that door. My gut feeling is that if we make a move, it will be for a roleplayer type like Melky, and that the FO still trusts JD Drew to pull something out of this season the way he did in 2007.
  8. Why on earth would you prefer one over the other? They're the same player, and if anything McD is younger.
  9. Pretty good move, if he can hack it at the MLB level.
  10. Then make a move for a guy like Melky Cabrera. But don't play a guy out of position until he's had an offseason to learn it when you already have a running issue about the guy getting hurt.
  11. In right field? A position Lowrie has never played? Come on yourself.
  12. Because either Drew or Reddick is playing in RF when Crawford gets back. They have a pretty good outfielder to back it up with, even if they clear Cameron and McD they're going to bring in another RHH OF before playing an oft-injured player out of position. That's the sort of thing you do with a whole offseason to work up to it, ESPECIALLY for a guy like Lowrie. If you want a switch hitting corner outfielder, call up Nava or make a trade for Melky. Don't play a guy who already has a fair sized injury history out of position.
  13. Once we get Crawford back, we won't be able to try things like that, and I think we get CC back before we get Jed.
  14. No surgery? I'd heard he was getting that sucker repaired. Well if he's fine, that changes everything, but I'd still look for a proper shortstop, and use both Lowrie and Scutaro as utility guys.
  15. I wouldn't mind taking a buy-low flier on Ian Desmond. If he hits he's in the mix next year, if he doesn't he got us through this one. If the price is right it's hard to lose a trade like that.
  16. They really need to go after some kind of shortstop. Lowrie's done for the year and Scutaro's playing hurt. It doesn't have to be more than a John McDonald type but we need a guy who can play shortstop defensively. I wonder how Yamaico Navarro's doing. But it seems like the team is developing his versatility, which doesn't say a lot about their perception of his skill at SS. He might not be an answer. And promoting Iglesias is right out, since we really need to try to draw his bat out before promoting him. If either Iglesias or a scrub would hit like a scrub at the big league level, acquire a scrub. So we're probably going outside the org on this one.
  17. The **** does this have with Saltalamacchia?
  18. His defense isn't bad, actually, By all the numbers I've seen he's average at worst.
  19. With the month of June practically complete, Salty's line for the month: .347/.418/.571 It just means that over the last couple weeks he's sustained the run, but that's still good news.
  20. Considering Selig's track record with the Expos, that actually makes it more likely that big Dodger contracts will be on the block. Trimming the payroll will make the team more valuable to a prospective buyer.
  21. Not quite ready to give up on JD. We've seen him do this before, and he's come out of it. Darnell and Cameron though, we don't owe either of them a thing, and clearing them and replacing them with competent outfielders could solve the Drew problem as well.
  22. Gotta do something about the complete and utter lack of production we're getting from the 4th and 5th outfielder. This will NOT do.
  23. Stupid question: Does Miller still have the potential to become a second Lester? Personally I think you have to start asking the question of what it'll take to keep this guy on the roster.
  24. LEFTHANDED THIRD BASEMAN DO NOT HAPPEN IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. Neither do lefthanded shortstops or lefthanded second basemen. You'll find a few in beer leagues and pickup ball, but the ability of a lefthanded thrower to make the charge plays and barehand throws a third baseman has to make on bunts and little rinky-dink grounders is something a LHT would really struggle with and have a much smaller margin of error on. Too small to expect them to perform reliably in MLB. That's why so many outfielders are LHT. It's because outfield and 1B are the only positions LHT consistently play. There have been more lefthanded throwing catchers in the history of MLB than lefthanded third basemen. So we should obviously play Gonzo at catcher, right?
  25. Corner OF huh? That's tempting. We put up with Manny in LF after all.
