First, about the Bill Simmons article...
Bill Simmons is a very good writer and his work is almost always entertaining. Let's not. however, confuse that with objectivity or accuracy. Bill has the worst case of man-love for Man-Ram that I have ever seen. As such, he seems willing to absolve Manny of most of his ******** and blame most everything on Scott Boras.
Of course Boras is a scumbag weasel. No one argues that. But the thought that Manny is somehow this doltish pawn who was operated like a puppet by Boras is insane! Nobody has a better handle on how great a player Manny is than Manny, himself. My firm belief is that while Boras certainly authored the plan, Manny executed it and is culplable (in as much as anyone needs to be considered such - I mean this isn't a John Grisham novel.) Boras is probably also guilty of convincing Manny that he's been s*** on constantly over the last eight years and that he was never truly happy. But that too is a lot Manny's ego, because he felt like that intermittently over the course of his time in Boston. And don't sell either Manny's intelligence short. He hides it the same what he hides his muscular physique under that baggy uni.
As for Manny to the Yankees? If it doesn't happen, it will because the Yankees decide to to go after him with enough money. As jacksonianmarch points out, they may not have the incentive to go after him full bore. That being said, Manny will go to the highest bidder, contender or no. And all those ass-much Yankee fans who hated him will turn around and warm up their lips and throw on their knee-pads to welcome him in typical hypocritical Yankee douche-bag fashion. And I agree with Simmons on that point...it will truly be horrible.
