  1. If we don't make any moves, this team IS doomed, and it's not an over-reaction, it's the sane reaction. Sure there's a chance, just like there's a chance to make a marginal hand a winner, but it's not likely, nor a good bet. My concern is that they wait too long to make moves and the hole we are digging becomes to deep to dig out (including blowing out the pen). But let's not try to paint this as just a "bad start". Worse ERA in baseball, 5 out of 20 games the starter couldn't make it to the 5th (25%), and another 3 or 4 games the starter couldn't get past the 5th. That's as ugly as it gets and it's not just the situation where "oh, Lester always starts slow". They are who we think they are.
  2. I've always been a huge Red Sox fan and I used to post on here a lot way back in the day, but it's just not a place I login in to much anymore. Does that mean I'm not emotionally invested in the team? Of course not, it means I don't take the time to post here. I generally post early in the season because I'm actually excited for the new season and being away for a while I think "Oh, I wonder whats going on on talksox". I don't pay much attention to baseball during the off-season due to football, work, school, hiking, etc etc, so it really does feel like a new slate come spring. I don't make 100s of posts anymore in the gamethreads just saying "Whoo!!!" or "Hanley's hot right now!". I can root for the team in real life...
  3. I agree with all of that and you can add the fact that Craig is still on the team to the list. To be fair, I haven't been here in a long long time. I started getting a little excited with the offense and youth, but it's a damned waste with the pitching staff. Anyway, when things are going right... nothing really has to be said... just enjoyed!
  4. I'm just being a good Red Sox fan, It's not like we have a decent pitching staff going through a rough patch. The rotation is embarrassingly average on paper, with lots of question marks. It's really no surprise that they've imploded and there isn't any evidence to suggest they are going to just magically become competent. One middle-of-the-rotation starter, 2 projects, a semi-disaster (Masterson), and then Buccholz... puke...
  5. Call guys up, make moves, and blow this rotation up. Let Buccholz suck in AAA, I'm sick of his s***.
  6. Hey, guess what, the pitching is as advertised! They better start making moves before they kill the bullpen and start losing ground. Things can't get any worse? Things can ALWAYS get worse! And how many more times does Craig get to fail until they realize it's time to cut losses and move on... I think the grounds crew have had a bigger impact on the team than him.
  7. He made a bad decision to dive for a ball instead of letting it drop and keeping Jones to a single. To make matters worse, it was a catch that could have been made... it went over his glove, he just made a terrible diving attempt. And there's the game. A scrub just won it, lol.
  8. So apparently they aren't allowing the fans to leave the park due to the protest? Is that even legal?
  9. Ride the hot hand. I often wish we had a Belichick type managing the sox. We wouldn't have to suffer through the "well, we payed him, so we're stuck playing him" BS. Admit mistakes, cut your losses, and ride the hot hands. $ should have no factor in playing time, end of story.
  10. I was pissed when they let Beltre go and he's only been the best 3B in MLB since then. Panda scares the s*** out of me defensively.
  11. Time to turn some of our prospects/outfielders into competent starting pitching.
  12. I think 'clutch' exists, but rarely does it show in stats (stats w/ RISP vs Non RISP situations, etc) because those players that are clutch (ie, can handle pressure) don't falter under pressure, but that doesn't mean they perform BETTER under pressure. I think that's the key. I think some players might be more focused in important situations (down, RISP, etc vs 2 out no one on early in a scoreless game), but I think that evens out. So yes, it really just boils down to the better players come through because they are better players who have managed pressure situations throughout their career, or they wouldn't be where they are. Especially for baseball. I feel like "clutch" exists as a measurable quantity more in some other sports (you can't deny Tom Brady is just fu*cking clutch), but baseball by it's nature is just tough.
  13. So much for Ellsbury not being worth the money... Sox are -1.1 WAA for the OF. 2nd to last in the majors for OPS from both CF and RF spots (0.597, 0.573). Sizemore was a long shot, Bradley isn't ready, a RF platoon where only half the platoon actually exists... a AAAA player. Victorino the only legit OF on our roster. And relying on our pitching staff, ha. We went into the season with 3 serious question marks in the rotation (4 if you include lackey) with no real solution if more than 1 failed. What happened to the pitching depth philosophy?
  14. I like the talent around the Diamond... but the pitching worries me, especially looking towards the future. In the previous "bridge" years we had the likes of Lester, Buchholz, Papelbon, and other talent that looked promising but just didn't pan out. I don't see it right now. I'm not saying it's not there, it just worries me a little.
  15. The only reason the team ERA is alright is because of the stellar bullpen. It's ALL about the starting pitching. We will be 26th, possibly even 27th/28th in the league after this game for starting pitching ERA. If your starters are getting shelled, all the offense in the world won't matter. Our pen has already been overused because of our starters getting knocked out early, it will fall apart fast if the starting doesn't come together. ^ Spot on with your last post. I agree that I'm not a fan of how structured the pitching is today. Too often they don't use their best pitchers in critical spots simply because it isn't their "slot" or other nonsense. Specialization is a good thing, but forced roles are not.
  16. What's Tonya Harding up to nowadays?
  17. The Sox will be 26th in the league in Starting pitching after tonight.... 4.75 era. Not pretty. If not for having the 3rd best bullpen (by ERA) in baseball, this team would be even more screwed. Things must change though or this starting staff is going to wear out the pen by June at this rate.
  18. It's baseball, there's no cap. The Sox have more than enough money. Really though, I can't blame the FO. Ellsbury clearly cared more about a few extra million than sticking with the Sox. It was his choice to leave.
  19. 7-run rule... I want a manager with a quick hook. Lets see those quality farm arms...
  20. WTF, is Farrell adopting Tito's 7 run rule now or something?
  21. Screw it, how about no MVP being awarded, rather, just reflect the entire team effort. Otherwise, I think it should be split between Lester, Ortiz, and Koji. Heck, would it be bad from to see Ortiz bring a chainsaw out to the field and cut that award up and hand it out to team mates? Damn individual awards in a team sport...
  22. That's for a fielder in the act of fielding with the runner interfering the play. That's not what happened. The play (throw from salty) was over, Craig didn't interfere with that. I'm not saying I agree with them making the call. It's like a ticky tacky PI call in the NFL in a pivotal spot. You don't decide a game like that. Yeah, my sig is old... (I should blow it up, f***ing hate Gonzo)
  23. The rule you quote (7.09) is for a BATTED ball. Unfortunately the call was within the definition of the rule, it is just a s***** rule and really s***** spot to call the rule.
