The contract was for 5 seasons. You dissect all 5 seasons. Overall, he failed expectations 60% of the time. And even when he exceeded them in 2008, he still didnt play 110 games. He effectively stayed healthy and excelled for one season. That's not enough to say he was anything but a disappointment

You are hiding behind the average without acknowledging that for 60% of his contract, he was below average.

See, that's stupid. You got locked in with Drew and got 1.6 seasons of excellence and 3.4 seasons of injury/ineffectiveness and you are averaging it out. It doesnt work that way. It's a 5 yr contract. You expect him to play to an above average to elite level every season. Just because he exceeded expectations for 1 season plus and failed expectations the rest doesnt mean you average it out and then say it was a good move.

So if a player signs for 5 yrs, has one elite season healthy, one elite but injured season, 2 below average seasons and one horrible season, does that mean he was great?

2007- 11 players qualified as RFers, Drew was 8th in OPS 2008- Drew didnt qualify due to injury, but he would have been 2nd 2009- Drew was #1 2010- Drew was 7th out of 10 2011- Didnt qualify, but would have been last For 3 of his 5 yrs, he was significantly below average. For two of those seasons, he was phenomenal.

2007, 2010, and 2011 combined... 1192AB 175R 303H 60-2B 7-3B 46HR 172BB .254/.348/.432 good for a .780OPS out of your starting RFer, in a big market, in the AL East. For 3 seasons, he was invisible. For 1 season he was awesome. For another season, he was awesome for 109 games. He was below average offensively in 60% of his seasons.

Most sox fans dislike him because me missed the equivalent of 1.25 seasons with injury time over 5 seasons. He wasnt durable and he was awful in 3 of his 5 seasons.

Really? At least we lost to the eventual champs. You guys lost to the Orioles, Jays, Rays, and us down the stretch and gave up a 9 game September lead to a team that didnt even dominate September (10 losses). That is a much, much bigger choke. I dont see it anywhere on the web. I know the option becomes available, but I dont think they need to pick it up until after his 5th yr, and there is no rush to do so

So, if you have $19.5 mil before hitting the cap this yr, then what do you do with it? If the job is to stay below the cap, then you cannot spend all of it, or else you'll risk going over the cap at the trade deadline 2012. For the most part, the sox cannot make a big acquisition. Any large acquisition would leave the other spots open. Also, it pretty much guarantees that Papi leaves. You have Lavarnway and you have a closer who is going to get $13+ mil per season. And you still need a middle of the road starter. Unless the sox get creative and deal away someone who is worth something (Ellsbury) then you're probably looking at them not even being able to maintain the status quo from a year ago

I think Youk, Buchholz, Lester and Pedroia will be making lower than their AAV next season since they all signed deals that start cheap then get very pricey. Also, AtWork didnt factor in the $6 mil for Scutaro, only his $1.5 mil buyout. So, you're really dealing with just under $20 mil.

The Giants also dealt them a minor leaguer. Cabrera was one of the best CFers in the AL last yr, behind only Grandy and Ells. And he's entering his prime at 27 yrs old. Throw in 20 steals, 18HR, 40+ doubles and a .300+AVG and you have a dynamic switch hitting CFer who can be a leadoff hitter. It's a classic case of sell high and buy low. Sanchez is coming off a terrible season and Melky is coming off an all star season.

Cahill is a contact pitcher who doesnt throw hard and gives up longballs. He'd die in the AL East. Gonzalez would be a sink or swim pitcher. He has AJ Burnett type stuff from the left side. But the walks are killer and in the AL East, he'd be a 6 inning pitcher for the most part, IMO, at least to start. But, at 26, he could improve his stuff and take his place as an ace. His numbers the last 2 yrs have been impressive.

My perfect offseason? Deal for Felix by trading AJ Burnett. Sign Pujols for $500 a game and put him in LF. Sign CJ Wilson on the cheap. And, win the lottery and move to Key West

So Oklahoma St moves up to #2. Oklahoma loses their top RB and WR going into their matchup with Ok State on 12/3. The s***** thing is, Ok State is likely to hold onto that #2 ranking, which would be a horrible thing for college football. My hope is that Stanford gets to #2 (even though that means them beating my Irish) because a Luck vs LSU defense matchup would be amazing.
