  1. You're out of your mind if you think the above package would get those two. For Gio, they want offense plus a top notch pitching prospect to replace him. You're talking Lavarnway and Ranaudo for him. Then for Bailey, they are going to want to get offense as well as a hard throwing prospect. Beane always tries to replace the commodity he is losing plus get prospects capable of filling other org needs. Without using anything on the roster, a deal for those two all star caliber players would likely require six prospects (3 for each). Lavarnway, Ranaudo, and Head for Gio. Weiland, Kalish, and Head/Jacobs/Bogaerts for Bailey. Needless to say, it aint happening
  2. For Gio they are asking for a king's ransom. For Bailey they are asking for the same. Put the two together and I dont know if the sox have that kind of haul unless you move Ellsbury, and to be honest with you, if you move Ellsbury, it better be for a true blue ace.
  3. Beane has never valued closers and now that Bailey is arb eligible, his value drops even further. Bailey has been good, but his injury history is shady especially when you talk about the forearm and elbow area. He's also a little overweight, which is obviously an issue for the sox team
  4. The AdGon deal isnt a hamstring since he's providing you middle of the order production and is signed through his prime. The Crawford and Lackey signings are the hamstrings. That's $36 mil per yr for at least the next 3 years in players who underachieved in their short stays thus far in Boston. When that much money is tied up in players who are playing well below their capability, then you're in trouble. I have maintained from the beginning that the sox arent going to get a huge name this season. Their rotation is anchored by 3 good, albeit injury prone, starters, and their lineup put up the most runs in baseball. They will rebuild their pen on the cheap, sign 2 guys who they hope can win at the back of the rotation and go to war with that
  5. And they couldn't let him in until he was dead. f*** the writers. He said that he didn't want to go in posthumously
  6. Yep, sounds like the Yankees are out on Wilson. They are most definitely in on Soler, Cespedes, and Darvish. Wilson is good, but he's not worth $20 mil per yr over 6 yrs
  7. Right, but moving Aceves into the rotation would have saved you from starting Weiland and Miller so many times. All in all, it's about the number of quality innings and he'd have been able to contribute more of them from the rotation
  8. It wasn't an issue of replacing lackey, though, you still had holes to fill from Buchholz's and matsuzaka's absence.
  9. I think you have a bigger risk, actually en enormously bigger risk with Madson at big money compared to Paps at bigger money
  10. The difference would be 1 yr and $17 mil guaranteed. If Papelbon gets the option to vest, then the Phillies will be happy campers. The fact is, that Papelbon is as proven a commodity as it gets in this market, he's a WS champ, and he's been closing for longer in a tougher division. It's penny wise and pound foolish
  11. I said this when Paps signed. If they give a big money deal to Madson then they're idiots
  12. I dont think you sign him as your setup man or closer. He might end up in the role, but you cannot come into the season with that in mind. He is a reliever on the wrong side of 35 who just posted his worst season in the last 4. He's a guy you get, hand the LH relief gig to and give 7th inning or scrap inning work to and see if he works his way up the pecking order. If you get him (he'll cost a good prospect or two btw) to be an integral part of the back end of your pen and he shows that he's in regression mode then you're f***ed
  13. Stewart? Nah, he couldnt cut it in Coors this past yr. He has talent, but he is a reclamation project that we cannot offer enough PT to reclaim. Nunez will be our utility guy full time this yr with Brandon Laird being the first callup
  14. Thornton is a dicey situation. He's on the wrong side of 35 and is coming off his worst season since 2007. Plus, he's never closed. If Bard shows he doesnt have the mental fortitude to close (something he hasnt proven yet), then you're turning over the closers role to another guy who hasnt closed yet. I still think the sox need to bring in an experienced closer to share the closing duties with Bard and let him get his feet wet.
  15. Bell is getting 3-4 yrs guaranteed. The guy have been one of the best relievers in baseball over the last 3 seasons.
  16. It could be, but he'd be thrust into a sharks tank in terms of location and depth
  17. He's healthy and he's a solid AL East #2 starter, something both of our teams could use
  18. It's there. What else is there for them to do? They've interviewed and re-interviewed, and now there is no new info pouring in. Yet they havent made a decision. This could definitely have an impact on FA signings as well.
  19. I am not advocating getting him, I just dont think you can say he's a fluke. I agree, but the thing is, for every AJ Burnett there is a guy like CJ Wilson who can harness his stuff enough to be very effective.
  20. Garza could be your #2 and he could be ours. He's the kind of arm I'd be willing to move Betances for. Banuelos, though, is untouchable aside from the top tier aces, IMO
