Today is James Paxton’s debut. He was dominant in the spring yet the exhibitions are over and the bright lights are on him. Couldn’t have picked a softer matchup vs the O’s. Going by lineup and rotation and with the division they’re in, the O’s might break the Mets record for losses. Hope to see another W! That being said, this alignment would ensure German starts 3 games and Loaisiga starts 2 before CC and Gio enter the mix. Of those 5 games, only 1 is a poor matchup with Loaisiga seeing the Astros. If we utilize the off days to push back that 5 spot after CC returns, we only see 2 more starts and they’re against the Royals and Angels, two teams not expected to be very good. We might be able to dodge this ill rotation health here

Interesting rotation alignment from Cora. Sale Eovaldi ERod Porcello Price He’s intentionally sandwiching the righties between the lefties, but he’s stacking two similar lefties in Price and Sale. Most time a manager wants to avoid the same look on back to back days vs the same team, yet Cora has done exactly that with his twin towers. I wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually slid Eovaldi between them later in the year due to off days, but I just find it odd to intentionally go L-R-L-R-L yet stack the two most similar guys back to back.

The Sox came back and beat a bad team so dramatically that the M’s closer is going on the IL. Good for them. The underbelly of the pen held the Mariners hitless. Still haven’t seen Brasier yet. I remember he had a toe issue in ST but I didn’t see any transactions putting him on the IL, so I assume he’s available. Eovaldi was exactly as he was in NY. Insane stuff, able to throw strikes, unable to avoid hard contact.

I like the literary reference there. The Sox pen will likely be okay in the late innings if Brasier can play to his FIP and Barnes to his recent history. The major problem with the Sox pen is what you saw yesterday. Beyond those two guys, there’s nobody reliable at all. At least when you had Kelly and Kimbrel, it extended you to 3 reliable guys and one guy in Kelly who would be reliable for large stretches.

Yes, games where you get s*** stomped happen. They’ll happen to my team too. Once again, the big takeaway is that Sale’s stuff was mortal. He’s going to learn that 92 is going to have to be spotted on a dime where his prior 97 had a little more wiggle. Reminds me of CC. He went from dominant to awful almost overnight and it took him two full seasons to reinvent himself and locate to a dime. All pitchers eventually have to adjust to diminishing stuff. Sale’s adjustment period may be at hand

The only take away from today is that Sale didn’t have his pre-injury velocity and couldn’t locate to an otherwise poor offensive club. If he’s a 91-93 pitcher, he’s going to need to locate much better
