HIs first full season as a professional has been nothing short of amazing. Joba Chamberlain, 21, was selected in the supplemental round as the 41st pick in the 2006 MLB draft. At the time, teams admitted Joba was a top 10 talent, but shied away because he had a serious tendency to be overweight (some say he tipped the scales at 300lbs on more than one occasion) at Nebraska and also had a lingering tricep injury. But that didnt stop the yankees from drafting him and signing him. He did sign late though and only got one appearance in A ball before the season ended. But it didnt stop there. He was sent to Hawaii by the Yankees for winter league ball and absolutely dominated. In 37.2IP he walked 3 batters, while striking out 46. That was a harbinger of things to come as he started to get national notice on many baseball prospect rankings.
This yr, he arrived at camp in the best shape of his life. Sitting at 6'2" 230 lbs and looking thin as ever, he showed up ready for work. And there was talk that Joba might actually skip the lower A levels just like his 06 draft compadre Ian Kennedy eventually did. And they were right, Joba was to start the yr in Tampa, high A baseball, something typically reserved for guys who have at least shown they can handle the long season leagues first in A ball. But, Joba fell to the hamstring bug and ended up missing most of ST and the beginning of the season in Tampa. But he ended up recovering.
His arsenal is interesting to say the least. He's one of those special armed pitchers to come around once in a great while. A guy at 21 who can regularly light up the gun in the 98-99mph range, but one who also has impeccable control. His plus off speed pitch is his slider, which he can throw close to 90mph. He also throws a MLB average curveball and a changeup with plus potential (yet is considered to be average to below average at this moment). In terms of velocity, you arent going to find many guys who can throw harder than Joba. In his last start, he was clocked at 99mph 4 times, the last being in the last AB of his start.
Thus far, his stat line looks like this....
4-0 2.03ERA 7GS 40IP 25H 51K 11BB .181BAA 0.90WHIP
He will join Ian Kennedy, Jeff Marquez, Alan Horne, Jason Jones, and Brett Smith in the rotation (one will likely be promoted to AAA, most likely Horne or Smith). Good luck Joba the Hut.
