  1. Nope. Arb eligibility is strictly based upon 25 man service time. Options are based upon 40 man roster inclusion. Most players on the 40 man roster get 3 options through their careers. Those who have spent 3 yrs on the 40 man roster and never once made it to the 25 man roster will get a 4th option yr. This was added in to counteract the insistence of top picks getting MLB contracts per Boras. Also, spending the entire yr on the 60 day DL will remove you from the 40 man during the DL stint and will also not use an option. So a guy like Brackman, who the yankees drafted in 2007 will start his option yrs this yr since he's got an MLB contract. They have already used one by sending him to Charleston
  2. Kottaras is known for soft hands? Stop trying to pump him up. He is a butcher behind the plate. The good thing about him taking on the knuckler is that even the best catchers look silly trying to catch that thing, so they can live with his defensive insufficiencies so long as they get patience and some pop from the plate.
  3. He hit .294 outside of April and hit .307 post ASB. Cmon ORS, you are smarter than that. His history suggests that outside of another rough start, this guy is a .300 hitter
  4. I fully expect Cano to hit over .300 again this yr. He had one bad month last yr which skewed all of his stats.
  5. Tomko goes to the pen in AAA. Geise and Aceves go to the rotation in AAA. I like Alby and am glad he gets another shot. He was solid up to his last outing before he broke his arm last yr.
  6. It is stupid to have to continue to defend Wang on here. He has started 97 big league games, has won 54 of them with a winning percentage of 73%. His OPS against over the last 4 yrs sits squarely in the .680 range with no value over .693 and none under .654. His WHIPs over the past 4 yrs are 1.32, 1.29, 1.30, and 1.25. His low ERA was 3.63, his highest was 4.07. He is about as consistent as anybody has been for the yankees in recent memory. Yes, he had his health issues in the early part of his career TJS in the minors and then shoulder inflammation which knocked him out for 8 weeks in his rookie season. Since then, he missed no games in 2006, he missed 3 starts in 2007 with a hammy strain and he missed half the season in 08 with a foot injury. So in terms of worrisome injuries, I would have to say his arms are clean and the foot should be a non issue by now. Assuming he doesnt have another fluke baserunning incident, I expect Wang to give us his usual, this time as the yankees #3 starter. 17-20wins, sub 4ERA, 1.3ish WHIP and he'll be a horse for us again.
  7. Drew in the 3 hole? Interesting, but how many times do you want to see him watch strike three with Ells and Pedroia on? I think Drew would work best in the leadoff spot. Therefore, he gets on base and you have a good situational hitter behind him then your RBI guys.
  8. Nobody ever said he was a contact hitter. Kilo, he is what he is. He takes a ton of pitches. It leads to high K rates. It also leads to a lot of BBs and with his speed, BBs might as well be doubles. Listen, i dont think he's gonna be a top flight CFer, but to be a cog in our machine, he doesnt have to be. All we need is a .350OBP and I'll be happy. And throughout his minor league career, he's provided that at all levels. And he provided that when he returned after his initial cup of coffee. I'd take .281/.354/.422 all yr long from this kid.
  9. Look at the stats in the minors and look at what he did after he was called up the second time before you make a stupid comment like that. If we went off first impressions, Pedroia would be pumping gas right now and Jacoby Ellsbury would have won 2 MVPs by now.
  10. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID= 4027715&name=Neyer_Rob Interesting, Neyer goes on to point out that Pena wasnt considered one of our top 40 prospects by BA this yr. I agree. Pena's history suggests he's a light hitting all glove SS. Unless he got his hands on some HGH. Or is really 27. Who knows. If teams start liking him, though, it would be nice to get something for him, or even better, if he puts enough pressure on Jeter to move him to the OF.
  11. Agree to disagree. I think Theo saw that as constituted, Masterson's arsenal in the rotation set him up to be a mediocre MLB SP. I think he saw his arsenal out of the pen as devastating and made the decision that a lights out reliever was better than a middle of the road starter
  12. Endurance, depth of arsenal, capability of the strikeout and a solid minor league resume spanning multiple levels over a very short period of time. Players who do what he did typically carve out big league careers. His velocity will keep him from being a top of the rotation SP, but I do think he carves out a big league career as a starter, whether it be with us or not remains to be seen. Looks unlikely at this point
  13. I think moving Masterson to the pen was a necessity for him. Make no bones about it, I like Masterson and would love to see him in pinstripes. But he isnt without his vices. He has a wicked sinker that he can throw 87-93mph, and intentionally varies the speed and break. And his slider is very solid, sometimes loopy and sometimes difficult to control. But, his changeup was non-existant and it was started to catch up to him. His last 3 starts were indicative of this. He was passable in all 3, but not to the level he was in the first 6. 18IP 18H 10ER 11BB 11K. The sox saw something and took corrective action. This is what Theo does. By moving him to the pen, they were able to keep him away from lefties and also had the opportunity of bringing in an extreme GB pitcher if a DP was needed. His numbers vs lefties werent horrible as many people will be quick to point out. But his stuff became a lot easier to take or foul off the more the lefties saw him. This was evidenced by a huge difference in OBP. Masterson vs Lefties: .238/.365/.422 Masterson vs Righties: .196/.273/.298 He absolutely murders righties. Lefties dont hit for a high average vs him, but they get on base and when they do hit the ball, it is usually for extra bases. Until his changeup matures, he should not be in a MLB rotation. As any good manager would just load up on lefties and feast on the amount of walks and EBH he'd give up. But what does that mean for the sox? Should they move him down to AAA and let him work on his changeup exclusively? That would be best for the player. But having an asset like Masterson who theoretically could be a long man/spot starter as well as a devastating righty and sinkerball specialist on your roster is hard to turn away.
  14. If its 2007 Reggie Willits, then sign me the hell up. Granted, Gardner is much faster and would steal a s***-ton more bases, but I'd take a .391OBP. You would absolute hate Gardner if he put up a Willits circa 2007 season.
  15. Kennedy will be a major league starter for a long time. There, I said it. It may not be with us, but he will carve out a career as a #3-5 starter. Thats depth to me.
  16. I am saying that the sox have the possibility of having a very good bullpen, especially if Saito can get through the yr and Ramirez continues what he did last yr. But subtracting Delcarmen and his 74 very solid innings from last yr, before the season starts is a recipe for disaster.
  17. Poor was the wrong word. Average is the right word 7th in AL in ERA 6th in AL in BAA 6th in AL in Sv% 8th in AL in WHIP 4th in AL in K/9IP 6th in AL in K/BB
  18. they're only obscure because you dont do your homework :harhar:
  19. He's been getting tested more rigorously in the minor leagues. He's probably already had his first piss test
  20. As always, it depends on what is on the table. That being said, the sox had a poor season with the pen last yr and one of the three headed monster at the end of that pen was Delcarmen. If they move him before the season, then see Ramirez come undone in the pressure that is Boston, then they will be royally fooked. I'd wait until Ramirez shows he's comfortable before entertaining offers for MDC.
  21. Exposito has a lot of maturing to do before the sox would entertain starting him. He walked a total of 9 times in 235PAs in A+ ball last yr. That just doesnt fit with the patient approach that the sox preach. Also, it was really his first good season after a season of injury in 07 and a very poor debut in 06. I'd keep the jury out on him. But his power as a 21 yr old is something to keep an eye on
