  1. It is what he does. Montero is a beast, an absolutely dominant offensive beast who just turned 20 yrs old. If he doesnt get hurt, he'll be taking meaningful ABs in the Bronx at some point in 2010. His bat is just that good
  2. If it takes 9 million to send Lowell away, the sox would just be better off keeping him as the righty portion of a DH platoon and good insurance should Youks, Beltre or Papi go down with injury. Hell, if Papi goes through another slump like pre ASB last yr, Lowell might be the full time DH by the ASB
  3. I think they are pretty spot on with the Sox guys. I think they miss the boat a bit on Banuelos though. I just dont see how they can ignore his age, stuff, left handedness and numbers in a long season league. I think he's a top 50 prospect, IMO. I am cool with Romine in the latter half as I think he needs to prove something in AA. And I am cool with them leaving the rest of the farm off the top 100 for now. After this season, though, we'll probably have 5-7 guys in the top 100. Our A ball team is gonna be loaded.
  4. Dojji, Beckett has good control, but not Schilling-esque control in the strike zone. Which is exactly the difference. Schilling had an easy transition since he could paint as well as be a power pitcher. Beckett can go to the high cheese whenever he wants to because he throws it so hard, but he isnt the kind of guy to paint to a corner on a regular basis. He also can back hitters off the plate with the FB also, which gets more difficult with lack of power. As Schilling learned and adjusted to, it's difficult to keep going high in the zone when your FB is 89-90. Those unhittable pitches become homeruns. Which is exactly why a lot of power pitchers struggle with the changeover to a finesse pitcher. Which is the entire point of this argument here. If you decide not to believe this, then so be it, but you'll be ignoring a century's worth of evidence.
  5. $1.2 million? Was hoping for a split contract, but $1.2 mil is definitely something that Cashman could cut should he suck in camp. Depth is a good thing. Maybe this means Melancon starts the yr in AAA and moves up due to injury/ineffectiveness
  6. Stolen bases should be counted in as a total base, or maybe 3/4 of a total base. If you do that, then Ellsbury's OPS jumps over .900.
  7. Boras f***ed Damon here. The Yankees offered 2yrs 14 mil at the outset of FA. Now, Damon gets $8 mil on a one yr deal in a non-lefty friendly stadium. When Damon's OPS gets dragged down by his lower SLG and he's another yr older, lets see if he can get $6 mil on the open market. My guess is that Johnny gets a total of $11 million over the next 2 seasons languishing in mediocrity while he could have made $3 million more playing for a title contender
  8. I dont know if he has more ceiling left in him. .300+BA and .350+OBP is really, really good. Especially when you add in the 70SBs. I dont think he has a lot of power projection, which is really the only part of his game that has yet to develop
  9. Jed Lowrie? Really? I think the only thing breaking out of him would be a wrist tendon
  10. Lee is a better bet going forward IMO, because his game plays better with age. Lee isnt a power guy, although he can reach 94mph at times. He's a movement guy who can hit a dime on the corner of the plate every single time. Plus, his loopy curve is nasty and his changeup is retardedly good. He's the kind of guy who can still give you ace level performance topping out at 88-89mph. Beckett's game is power and command, but without a 96mph fastball, I dont think he'd play nearly as well.
  11. Whoever tries and sells his 2009 season as bad is an idiot. He was very good in 2009. His 2008 was shaky and prior to that he was still fancying himself a starter. My concern is a change in league for an older pitcher with injury problems on a team with better options in the farm system. Hence, why a competition would be great. If he can outpitch Melancon and Logan and a few other guys on the 40 man roster, then he earns his paycheck. If he cannot, there shouldnt be anything keeping NY from cutting him loose. Thing is, he hasnt signed anything yet
  12. I think Carlos Santana will get a lot of play this season, especially with Cleveland likely to be sucking pond water by June
  13. yeah, he's gone. Happened awhile ago
  14. Bard one time through the lineup should be dominant. I think it works both ways, he's got another yr under his belt. But we'll see. He's my sox pick, thats about it
  15. It should be nothing more than a split contract with incentives at the big league level
  16. But I watch the gamezzzz!!! RIP Gom
  17. The sox biggest breakout candidate, IMO, is Daniel Bard. I think he enters the eschelon of elite setup men by season's end, spurring a controversy with Paps and the Boston brass at season's end and sending him packing to another club. For the Yankees, I think the biggest breakout player will be ARod, if a multi-MVP can really break out. I expect him to put up gaudy numbers in the Bronx for 2010 and take home the MVP award. For the rest of baseball, my choice is David Price. I think he becomes a CY candidate this season, taking over the spot previously owned by Kazmir at the top of the Rays rotation.
  18. Averaging 100 games for a catcher who has had durability issues during his age 29 and 30 seasons who's 31 yrs old? There is a reason why Theo is waiting, he's playing it smart. Theo has always been about paying a player for what he could contribute and not paying for past success. If re-signed right now as a catcher, he's in line for $10-15 mil per season depending on what Mauer gets. If Theo waits until the end of the season, he'll be able to better gauge his worth. If VMart needs to spend half his time at another position, he isnt worth 8 figures per season. VMart as a DH or 1B is worth probably $6-8 mil per season. I guarantee Theo is going to use this in his extension argument and potentially save some bucks here.
  19. Interesting, I read this on mlbtraderumors as well. I am cool with adding Park so long as he isnt guaranteed a spot on the 25 man. His numbers as a reliever were great last yr. The season before, his ERA was fine but the peripherals kinda sucked out of the pen 2009- 50IP 2.52ERA 52K 43H 16BB 2008- 70.1IP 3.84ERA 75H 49K 28BB If we get him, then fine, but its nothing more than a depth signing. He's too washed up for the rotation and he's not consistent out of the pen. I think we have some better internal options
  20. True, it is, but do you really want to lock in a guy who will be the DH by then, especially when his bat is good but not great? Papi was the exception to the rule because he was one of the top 3 hitters in the game from 2004-2007.
  21. yeah, I just saw that
  22. I am not anticipating it being easy. I have a feeling he's gonna sign for an 8 figure bonus since his bat plays well at other positions, ie he can move if need be
  23. Just look at Mark Mulder and Mark Prior to see what shoulder surgery does to elite level stuff. This is why the Yanks wouldnt even guarantee 2 mil to a guy who won 38 games from 06-07
