  1. Sounds like he's actually 20 and will be 21 by opening day
  2. Maya has a few different SRs out there. I read one on Maya from 2008 and it says he sat 92-94 and reaches 96mph. The one from mlbtraderumors says that he sits 88-92 with 4 offspeed pitches. At least thats what he showcased at his workout.
  3. There are a few different schools of thought. Some coaches stress holding runners on first and foremost. Others are kinda middle of the road. Farrell and Francona are the exact opposite. They feel that preventing the next baserunner is more important than holding the current one. Their thought is that taking even one percent of your attention away from the hitter increases your chances of giving up the EBH that drives in the baserunner.
  4. The sox have been smart here in waiting. VMart needs to prove that he can be a full time catcher. As a full time catcher, he's very valuable. As a 1b, he isnt. Think about it this way. As a catcher, McCann, Posada, Mauer, VMart. He's top 4 or 5 in OPS. As a 1b, he's barely better than Adam LaRoche.
  5. Maya throws pretty hard but can be wild. He apparently has a pretty good secondary arsenal with a curveball. He recently started throwing that pitch, though, in lieu of a slider that he used to throw. Ruiz played 1b, but he probably profiles as an OF due to his good speed and average power. He's not a slugger, he's more of a gap power guy with a good eye and solid speed. His biggest weakness is vs lefties. Both guys could play in the bigs right now, Maya being a pen arm or a back end rotation guy and Ruiz being an OFer or a 1b for a lesser squad. They are good pickups and will be expensive, but the rumor is that the sox are signing both
  6. Sorry yz, what I mean was that after Youkilis, he's the only guy who you're pretty sure what his OPS is gonna be. Its gonna be around .900. The question is, will that be over 100 games or over 140?
  7. What I meant was the positions after Youkilis. I think the sox top 4 is gonna be solid from Ells-Pedroia-VMart-Youkilis. You can bank on those guys hitting around or near their standards set over the past couple seasons. From the #5 spot on, the questions arise with every single hitter
  8. All of these prediction sites are pretty inaccurate yr to yr. And every single prediction mod has something different. I'd go with the likelihood that both teams will be making the playoffs and the strong likelihood that NY is winning the East
  9. Drew has missed 100 games as a Red Sox in 3 seasons. But for 2 out of the 3 seasons, he's been pretty durable.
  10. Ortiz is a part of it, but the offense after Youkilis is the biggest questionmark IMO. Drew is the only guy whose offensive production you can bank on, yet his injury problems and chronic shoulder/back issues make his contribution questionable. If the new acquisitions and Papi get their s*** straight and play well, then this team is gonna be very, very good.
  11. I got the comparisons from Frankie Piliere on PP. He essentially said that AH has a stronger arm, is faster, and has a much better bat. Iglesias is worlds better with his glove both to the forehand and the backhand and he gets rid of the ball quicker and is more accurate from the SS position. Essentially, AH has more tools than Iglesias, but Iglesias is as polished as you can get defensively. We already kinda knew that. Piliere thinks he could stay at SS, but he does admit that his tools play out better in CF since his throwing motion is kinda long and the kid can fly.
  12. http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/yanks_target_cuban_ss_as_jeter_heir_FfYx51LDrkZjCcBA6XHaiO Adeinis Hechavarria, a righty shortstop who says he's 19 yrs old seems to be the big Yankee target. He hasnt been cleared to sign yet, but the Yankees have been watching him like a hawk. Hechavarria will be compared to recently signed sox SS Jose Iglesias but they do have their differences. Hechavarria has a better arm and is more of a total package athlete than Iglesias. But Iglesias is world better with the glove, leaving many to think that AH's future could be in CF a la BJ Upton. The Yankees are said to view him only as a SS though, and he is expected to need a few yrs of seasoning before being big league ready. He is expected to command at least what Iglesias got and probably into the 8 figure range due to his offensive potential. Should be fun to see. Hope we get him
  13. The big question about Beltre is his health. If he's healthy, he'll be serviceable. If he isnt, then this is a waste of 15 million
  14. Nixon gained a lot of pub from his ownage of Roger Clemens and his dirt dog mentality. When he threw the bat at the TB pitcher, I think it kinda solidified his stance in Boston. JD Drew is the better player, no doubt about it. But he does it muich quieter. Which is one of the reasons why people havent gravitated towards his defense.
  15. Growing up a Yankee fan in CT, I always thought truck day was stupid. But after defecting to NY for 4 yrs and now back in MA for 3, I see truvck day as a symbol of hope. Hope that the winter is coming to a close, hope that warmer weather and fun is around the corner, and another season of baseball to occupy the mind. Truck day may be a Red Sox thing, but for native New Englanders, its a great day regardless of the colors you root for. We're almost there people. 50 more days until opening day
  16. And last I checked, a decade was 10 yrs, which would give us 2 titles over the past 10 yrs. Math mustnt be your strong suit
  17. ready for another run doesnt mean I am guaranteeing a victory there numbnuts. I am psyched that the season will be starting shortly as we all should be. Another run is essentially another season. I cannot wait. I think we can all agree on that one
  18. I am so glad that baseball season is right around the corner. Ready for another run mother f***ers? I sure am!
  19. I have said before that Lackey should be durable. The questions are valid, but when he's on, he's a top 10-15 pitcher in the AL.
  20. VMart is middle of the pack as a 1B. As a catcher, he's top 5
  21. Wouldnt be surprised if he exploded this yr. I have predicted a big yr for him this yr
  22. I dont agree with you often, but you're spot on here
  23. The Sox pen will be a top 1/3 bullpen as usual. Dont think they'll be as dominant as they were in the first half of the yr though. But Paps and Oki will anchor the pen and the rest will find a niche. Bard is really the key, though. He could take this pen from top 1/3 to top 3 if he realizes his potential
  24. Thames is a very good depth signing. I like it. He gives you a legitimate right handed platoon candidate with Gardner. He also gives us a platoon candidate at DH if needed should Nick Johnson get injured. He crushes lefties. Looks like Jamie Hoffman is gonna be on a train back to LA.
