  1. The fact that the FO didn't make such a move (which, from what I've read would have involved a lot more than Buch and Bard) may be indicative that the FO has reservations whether this is truly a championship caliber team even with Halliday.
  2. I've always had a bunch of Sox on my list of suspects...Nomar, Ortiz, Ramirez, Tek, Trot, Kapler, Troy Oleary, John Valentin... ...and a bunch of other MLB players including Thome, Sheff, Edmunds, Magglio, Berkman, Burnitz, Piazza, Caminiti, Bagwell, Brian Giles, Albert Belle, Pujols, Sorrento, Juan Gon, Sierra, Matt Williams, Jeff Kent, Soriano, Posada, IRod, Andrue Jones, just to name a few... and I have zero confidence that Griffey Jr and Jeter are clean. That said...I don't really care about this latest news as I've not cared much about other revelations regarding PED use. I believe that more than 50% of MLB players are/were using, so I can't get worked up over any disclosure. What does piss me off is (1) the excuses, denials and outright lies these guys tell when they're caught and (2) that some fans buy their ********. They're not my heroes or role models or friends...so I really don't care much what they do.
  3. oh, and Dexter will be happy to play hide the salami with ya while you talk and watch the game as well, but it's not a prerequisite to getting the SRO seats, you could just blow him in the parking lot first. Sheeeeesh...just when you thought you'd seen it all.
  4. Back then some od us were in the Herald forum where Dougie was referred to as MienXXX
  5. maybe GOM can get you a job beating up old ladies? Anyway, how long you been out? what did you do prior.
  6. way too much time on your hands, bro.
  7. I've read conflicting reports regarding a buyout option in Thomas' contract. Apparently the B's can buy him out at any time and cut their $ commitment by one-third, spreading those payments over the remainign term of the deal. One report I read indicated that the cap hit would be reduced if the buyout happens. However a more recent article I read indicates Thomas contract is considered a 35+ contract and that the B's are saddled with his cap hit even if Thomas retires or is bought out. If there is a significant potential cap savings by way of buyout (which was my initial understanding) I like the deal. If not? Very questionable. The brief article that concerns me: http://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/2009/4/5/824026/tim-thomas-new-deal-will-be
  8. Kessel ain't getting $5m from the B's, that's for sure. As for where his 36 goals come from if he's moved? Unlike some here, I don't see Recchi having all that much impact, yeah he chipped in some decent production in a short time here, but how effective wil lhe be over the long haul...at his age? Sturm comes back, I can see 20 from him, but I'd suspect a drop off in overall goal scoring without Kessel in the mix... B's simply don't have the cap room to make an acquisition to significanlty absorb Kessel's production.
  9. So it's a $5.2m cap hit for the Blackhawks over the next 12 yrs for the now 30 yr old Hossa. These long term deals, unless they involve significant out-clauses for the teams, can really come back to bite later.
  10. The Schaefer buyout will result in a cap hit of $567k for 2009-10 and 2010-11. One reason he was kept in the AHL all of last year (in addition to the fact that he's not that good!) is because had he played in the NHL for the Bruins his cap hit would have been much higher...I believe I read that the final yr of his contract would have cost the B's $2.3 million. Not sure what that translates too in cap hit terms. So in 2008-09 he didn't cost the B's anything in terms of cap space when he was kept in Providence all year. However, even repeating that approach, this coming year he'd still be paid $2.3m to play in the AHL...way too much. There's a contingent that still believes all that matters is cap hit...this move shows that cap room is NOT the only consideration (at least for the Jacobs family) and that cash out the door is still a concern.
  11. Any clue what the cap hit was on Shaefer being retained vs. the hit on the buyout? In other words, what did this buyout cost them in terms of cap space. As for Timmy, I see the two issues as mutually exclusive...if the Thomas signing was too generous, then it was too generous regardless of what happened with Shaefer.
  12. Kg....I don't get the link between Shaefer and Thomas...set me straight.
  13. Mariano? That's shocking. While he does have electric stuff, I think you've given us all a jolt here. Greatest reliever? Yes, that would be a valid argument, but greatest PLAYER? That's a bolt from the blue, find another conduit for your Mariano man-love.
  14. Good stat post, very similar numbers for the most part. Could be teams are looking for pop from 3B and DeRosa offers a bit more of that, still not a huge difference. Looks like Teahen was shaky last year, .313 OBP vs. Derosa's .376. Teahen might offer some team a pretty decent stop gap so I too don't get why his name isn't bantied about more.
  15. I'm in the camp of if there is fluid, there is an underlying issue causing the fluid...and that it will return. Seems to me that if he's having issues months and months after the surgery, that this could require another surgery or be an issue that never gets totally corrected but requires constant treatment going forward.
  16. I think he knows that playoffs don't count but is just pointing out that he sucked when it counted.
  17. Best all-around player I've ever seen in my lifetime: Barry Bonds
  18. Green certainly benefits by having playing with Ovechkin, Semin, et al, but he is an amazing offensive "defenseman"...and he tallied his 31G/42A in only 68 games...projected over 80 games that'd be 85 pts from a D-man...very good in today's NHL. However, and despite his +28 rating, he's not great defensively, often being caught out of position due to his efforts on offense. The very fact that he did NOT win the Norris, tells you how poor he must be in his own end. If he were even "good" in the defensive zone, he'd have won this thing going away. As for Chara and Lidstrom? Toss up in my opinion.
  19. or better yet take those whiny sore losers from Detroit and make 'em drink Pen's urine from the Stanley Cup.
  20. Exactly, 700. They're leveraging their depth, auditioning starters, saving arms....but likely won't do this for an extended period of time. It's hard enough to come up with 4 effective starters, let alone 5 or 6. There will be fallout...someone will falter, get hurt, whatever, and they'll work back down to the 5-man rotation.
  21. No, nyet, non, for a couple of reasons..stay with me here: (1) Elton John told Mauer he’s the best catcher in the major leagues and said he wished Mauer and Morneau played for the Atlanta Braves, of whom John is a big fan. OK, when Elton John says you're his favorite "catcher" there is something horrifically wrong going on...guys like that don't hit .400, although they make great florists. (2) After having a good game Mauer said: “It was one of those nights I was seeing it well, ... Maybe it had something to do with Jacque moving behind me. " Hmmm...his fixation with guys moving behind him and his affiliation for pickle smooching pop stars will foil him.
  22. Senor Sizzle? Nothing? No? Not even a titter? Tough room here tonight.
  23. No, Mauer will NOT hit .400.
  24. Is it true Chuck Norris invented the giraffe when he upper-cutted a horse?
