  1. That's not true. I've seen him play enough to know he plays a physical style all the time...he's not a great fighter but he'll go if need be. Lucic being there would not have changed anything.
  2. This is the sort of stuff upon which legends are born. Nicely done.
  3. Da ladee at Fenway sez dat Pesky has a huge pole...and she touches it at every home game...no wonder dat guy is always smilin'
  4. Terrible and washed up? Not really. On the downside of his career? My hunch is that it might be a possibility. Depending omn the health of the knee and wrist, I could see a rebound this year, i.e. .280, 30 Hrs, 100 RBIs, then I'd expect to see a tailing off.... 2010 = .275/25/90..... 2011= .265/21/85... etc. He's got that body type which seems not to hold up. I certainly hope to be wrong, would love to see him hit 40 or so HRs.
  5. The risk/reward or cost/benefit analysis of a particular player differs depending upon what MLB team we're talking about. The Yankees are ready, willing and able to accept the possibility that a long-term/Big $$ contract might fail, whereas most other teams are not R/W/A to do so as such an outcome could leave the organization hamstrung for several years.
  6. HE was borderline and it played out that way. There's a bunch of guys who are borderline, i.e. Dawson...I wouldn't include Mattingly as a borderline HOF'er, his numbers fall too short. For the helluvit, link below is compares stats of some fairly similar players: http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/historical/player_stats.jsp?compare.x=&box6=XXXX118443XXXX&c_id=mlb&section1=2&statSet1=1&statType=1&sortByStat=HR&timeFrame=3&timeSubFrame=0&baseballScope=mlb&isCompare=true&sitSplit=&venueID=&teamPosCode=all&HS=true&box1=XXXX113151XXXX&box2=XXXX114526XXXX&box4=XXXX121140XXXX&box5=XXXX120225XXXX&checkBoxTotal=0&playerLocator=mattingly
  7. Exactly...the FO has not worked from a position of desperation. With 2 WS titles in 4 years followed by a very strong run last year, they've "purchased" some goodwill amongst long-time fans and realists which could help to carry them through a potentially stormy season or two, although I believe they'll still look at all options and if there is a chance to significantly improve the team while adhering to some self-imposed cost constraints, they'll do it. Meanwhile, the bandwaggoners and newcomers, who in many ways resemble some Yankee fans, want to win at all costs and may question every move...since they're often footing the bill, that is absolutely their prerogative. The FO recognizes all this and the difference between the 2 camps, thus we have the FO seeking to balance winning with long-term organizational viability. This is not breaking any new ground here at all, just indicative of the FO's patience and long-term philosophy.
  8. This is my recollection as well. I think when they do decide not to spend they're not only setting up for future years but also lining some pockets as well.
  9. Let me fix that for you: Nothing worse than a Clemens outing in the playoffs.
  10. Might I be so bold to suggest that if the moves the Red Sox did make blow up and if their lack of other moves proves damaging to their results in 2009, that perhaps the outcome, i.e.not making the playoffs, was something even the FO was willing to accept? It may not make the fans happy, but IMO it's a reality. I believe this FO considers the possibility and weighs whether its acceptable or not to miss the playoffs under the presumption that their moves/lack of moves serve the greater good of the organization in the long-term...and the owners in the short term ($$$).
  11. Never heard of this guy who will soon be 31 and has amassed 332 career ML at bats. How has he flown below the radar so long?:dunno: Just kidding, Riv.
  12. In a sense that's all we can do, save for voicing any displeasure via our actions at the ticket gate, concession stand, merchandise outlets, etc. None of us have exactly the same perspective regarding our favorite professional teams. Some view it simply as entertainment, while others take what happens on and off the field much more personally. In addition, I think fans differ with regard to how much they're willing to accept as "the way it is." It's actually these differences in perspective that make "fandom" more interesting. If we were all rabid fans, or all pissed off fans, or all complacent fans, it would be extremely boring around here.
  13. Wasn't he upset with them once prior, leading up to him joining his HGH buddy Roger in Houston?
  14. Valid point, particularly if Penny/Smoltz combine for relatively few appearances as compared to what Lowe would provide. The other side of this, I think, is that it's not a $13m vs. $10m issue, it is $39m vs $10m, as a Lowe deal would be a multi-year deal.
  15. HEard on ESPN Radio this am that a reporter who covers the Lions asked the head coach, who's son in law is the D-Cooordinator, if he wished his daughter had married a better Defensive coordinator. Pretty funny, particularly because he meant it very tongue in cheek, but apparently there was outrage and this reporter ending up resigning.
  16. I think this is a very good signing by the Guardians. Hey, maybe, just maybe, he does something for them.
  17. Anyone ever wonder, with the current CBA expiring in a couple of years, whether a pullback by 90% or so of the teams in MLB (spending wise) could be a pre-cursor to a stoppage and push for a cap? In my mind I don't really think so, but playing devil's advocate, what better way to build a movement to that end than by sitting back and watching the Yanks spend their asses off and win two or three in a row? I still think that enough teams make enough profit and are concerned more with taking $$$ under revenue sharing and grabbing their share of the Yanks luxury tax that it would be difficult, without out and out collusion, to force such a system on the players association.
