  4. A setback for Wakefield Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff August 29, 2009 04:25 PM Tim Wakefield has been scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the Rays because his back is acting up. He will be evaluated on Monday. Wakefield's absence, as well as the possibility of a rainout tonight, throw a serious wrench into the Red Sox rotation for the next few days. Here's what we know at the moment: Tonight: Clay Buchholz Sunday: TBA (Buccholz will start if tonight's game is rained out) Monday: TBA Tuesday: Jon Lester Paul Byrd, who last pitched on Tuesday, is a prime candidate to start tomorrow if tonight's game is played.

  7. Wagner looking forward to joining Sox Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 26, 2009 06:00 PM Billy Wagner will get here tomorrow, but the newest Sox said from his home in Virginia moments ago he's excited about joining the Red Sox and the pennant race. "Really Boston is a team I always wanted to play for," said Wagner. "I saw my first big league game in Boston when I played for Brewster in the Cape Cod League and I can still see the seat where I sat. It'll be neat to see it when I get there." Wagner said he never didn't want to come to Boston. He just felt uncertainty about his rehab from Tommy John surgery because he wasn't far into his comeback. The other thing was the fact he wanted a chance, if his elbow remains sound, to get 400 saves in his career and he won't do it in Boston because "they have a very good closer." "I'd just like to have the opportunity, if I'm able, to reach that goal. After playing in the league this long, that means a lot to me. It would be right for me to come in here and say 'I should be closing here' because that's not the case. Boston has one of the best closers in baseball. I just want to come in here and contribute to a World Series championship in any way I can." Wagner said he's 11 months into what is normally a 14-month process and while he said he feels great and is progressing well, he admitted part of his initial apprehension was not wanting to let the Red Sox down by not being able to pitch enough. Wagner admits he can't pitch everyday. "After speaking to Tito and Theo I realize that they'll make sure I'm used the right way and that I can continue to get stronger and stronger. They've taken the pressure off. I'm a competitive person and the way I was I wanted to pitch everyday, but I know I can't pitch everyday anymore." Wagner said he heard the comments about Eric Gagne and how he didn't live up to his billing when he came. He certainly doesn't want to be that. "The Red sox took a leap of faith with me. They saw me for two innings and they took a chance on me." Asked whether he'll be OK with Jonathan Papelbon after the Sox closer originally made comments that Wagner's presence might cause a disruption to roles in the pen, "I understand exactly what he's talking about. He's protecting his guys out there. I remember being in a situation in Houston where the same kind of thing happened. But things work out. It's going to be an honor for me to play with these guys. The Red Sox have a great bullpen and I certainly don't want to come in and make it worse. I don't want to be a headache to anyone. I want to make it better."
  8. See, I missed it, told you I was a dork! Sorry..... No problem, I deserve to get s*** just like everyone else.
  9. More from the Globe: Permalink|Comments (0) Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff August 26, 2009 03:58 PM Tim Wakefield makes his first start since July 8, and Victor Martinez will catch the knuckleballer for the first time. Mike Lowell begins the game on the bench, with Casey Kotchman starting at first base. Also, Billy Wagner won't join the club until tomorrow, as has been the plan since he was acquired from the Mets yesterday. There were reports elsewhere this afternoon that he would arrive today. Roster questions Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 26, 2009 03:21 PM With Billy Wagner due to be placed on the Sox' roster tomorrow, there's no obvious roster move to be made. At the moment anyway, there's no Red Sox injured enough to warrant placing him on the disabled list, though that could change. So who's in jeopardy? It appears Brad Penny, who has been taken out of the rotation could be at risk to be designated for assignment. But there will be questions to be answered especially tonight when Tim Wakefield makes his much anticipated return. If Wakefield pitches well and his calf and back are not issues, then there would no chance the Sox would put Wakefield back on the disabled list. If Wakefield struggles with his calf, there's a good chance Wakefield would have to go back on the DL. The Sox have Daisuke Matsuzaka due back to the major league roster by Sept. 8 at the earliest. The Sox also have Paul Byrd in Pawtucket and will be a Sept. 1 call-up. Penny has certainly struggled badly. Would the Sox cut ties with him? The next 24 hours should provide the answer.

Alexei Ramirez, SS -- Gavin Floyd, RHP Red Sox 1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF 2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B 3. Victor Martinez, C 4. Kevin Youkilis, 3B 5. David Ortiz, DH 6. Jason Bay, LF 7. J.D. Drew, RF 8. 11. Lowell's turn to sit Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff August 26, 2009 02:02 PM Mike Lowell will be out of the starting lineup tonight against White Sox righthander Gavin Floyd, with lefthanded-hitting Casey Kotchman starting at first base, Kevin Youkilis at third, and Victor Martinez behind the plate for the Red Sox. Red Sox manager Terry Francona revealed tonight's lineup alterations this afternoon during his weekly conversation with the hosts of WEEI's "The Dale and Holley Show." Martinez, who was acquired at the July 31 trading deadline, will make his first stab at catching knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, who will be making his first appearance since July 8. Wakefield, who is 11-3 with a 4.31 ERA, has been sidelined with a back problem that cause complications in his calf muscle and has been on the disabled list since July 21. To make room for Wakefield on the roster, the Red Sox designated righthander Enrique Gonzalez for assignment. It is the second time this month Gonzalez has been DFA'd /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// I wish Kotteras was going to be on the bench, just in case.....
  12. Jimmy Buffett's music blows!
  13. If you think that was lucky, you are delusional. We out-played you guys and you CHOKED.
  14. The division is not impossible to win. We need to sweep the White Sox and Texas needs to sweep the NYY. The only time I came close to rooting for the NYY was after 9/11/01. Can't do it.
  15. No more bitching about Baldelli and Tek, please! YESSSSSS!!!
  16. Hope you feel better soon!
  17. It was weird to see the Posada and Burnett not being on the same page early in the game yesterday.
