  1. I thought Porcello looked fine. He's not a #1, but he should be solid. Masterson's velocity is down significantly. That's not negative. It's just a fact. Kelly looks like garbage. Not negative -- just a fact. Maybe he just needs to get healthy and build arm strength. Buch has looked good. He just needs to stay healthy. This is an objective assessment of the situation, not being negative.
  2. Victorino is playing every day with no nagging problems. He's looking healthier than he has been since he has been with us.
  3. Betts continues to rake. In his first 2 ABs, he has a double to the RCF gap and an inside the park homer to CF.
  4. Betts has had a great spring. He has very few bad ABs and he hits the ball hard to all fields. He has earned a job. Who is the odd man out?
  5. If our number 5 starter goes down, we have another one of those -- Miley. We don't have a number 1.
  6. I guess Mujica is the backup plan.
  7. Cheer up? I was in the Florida sunshine watching Red Sox baseball. What could be better? End of the world? I am just passing on information.
  8. I think Rodriguez was sent down this week.
  9. I couldn't see the movement on his pitches from my vantage point, but he did get a number of key ground ball outs and a DP. Earlier in the week, Matt Harvey was hitting 97 on the same gun. Masterson was not throwing hard. Eck would have said that he was tossing up salad.
  10. Maybe some of the scouts guns registered him at 91-92, but he didn't hit higher than 89 on the stadium gun, and that was a couple or three times. I moved into the shade for his fourth inning and I couldn't see the readings from my vantage point. The stadium gun had him more than a few clicks of last year's velocity in the first three innings, never reaching 90.
  11. It doesnt look like HanRam left his dog in LA. Normally, I wouldn't think much of it, because it is just spring training, but he does have a reputation. He never runs hard. He needs a kick in the butt, but I don't think there is anyone in our clubhouse to do that.
  12. Masterson who lost a few clicks on his fastball last season did not find them today. He never hit 90, topping out at 89 once or twice. He sat mainly at 87/88. He threw several 84-86. I can't see him being successful at that velocity. Hopefully, he is building up arm strength and velocity, but I am not very hopeful. Earlier in the week, Kelly looked terrible. Porcello looked fine, but the only other excitement on the mound was Rodriguez.
  13. On Wednesday, XB made an excellentdiving/sliding play in the hole to start a double play.
  14. I never said that they don't have a plan. Of course they have a plan. However, we are not privy to the plan, nor do we know whether they have executed that plan with success. I am saying that it is my opinion that the pitching moves this off season have not been very strong. No one has really countered that opinion with solid statistical evidence or data. What their plan is and whether they have exceuted it doesn't change my opinion of these moves. I see no compelling evidence that this will be a. Strong staff.
  15. We are fans so hope is a necessity.
  16. They are rationalizations because without knowledge of the FO strategy it is an unsubstantiated excuse. If you like what they did in the off season, that is okay. You usually come armed with stats and data to back up your arguments, but I don't remember seeing any compelling data in this regard. I have seen arguments (not by you) that this collection of mediocrity is an execution of the FO forward thinking strategy. Eyerolls. That is not backed up by data. It's a guess at best. IMO, an argument like that is baseless rationalization.
  17. Yuk!
  18. Day games are not the best barometer. It will not show up in a box score or in a stat, but Hanley Ramirez's instincts looked pretty bad today in the OF today. He took a wild route on contact today as if the ball was over his head. The ball settled gently in the glove of XB on the lip of the OF grass. It was a routine infield pop up. I will be watching him closely, because that was an amateurish break on contact.
  19. Yep, and because people are just speculating as to FO strategy -- pulling it out of their you know what's. I don't like their moves, and I don't care about speculating about FO strategy. If people like their moves, that is fine, but it's bogus when people conclude that the FO executed its strategy. As for resigning ourselves to the situation, there is no alternative. I have had to resign myself to having had a jackass boss from time to time, but I still complained about it. Does resigning ourselves to a situation mean that we can't have an opinion about it?
  20. He looked like dog doo today. Some very weak hitters hit him pretty hard today.
  21. i am not a scientist either, but a ball with a lot of over-spin does look like it is picking up speed on a hard infield and artificial turf. It's like a rising fastball. It's not rising. It' s just not sinking at the same rate as other fast balls. Scientists did publish papers concluding that the curve ball was an optical illusion.
  22. Is there an expiration date on issues we discuss? If anyone is still alive who remembers the 1948 season they are probably still questioning the decision to start Denny Galehous in the playoff game against the Guardians. The only thing that settles an issue is winning. Winning ends whining. Until this staff proves that it isn't just a collection of no-name mediocrities, I will be pissed about losing Lester. Any explanation offered is just a weak-ass rationalization as far as I am concerned. If those excuses make people feel better, good for them. I not buying any of it.
  23. Moose came back to haunt the Yankees in the 1963 World Series with the Dodgers hitting a big Homer or 2.
  24. Cliff Lee is done. I wonder if that makes it more or less likely that Hamels gets traded.
