  1. Also, this is not at all what I said. I am not convinced that my opinion is right about the issue of elite base stealing speed. I can be convinced by evidence, just not by studies based on faulty data. I guess you are not happy with anything less than capitulation on an issue. You enjoy the game in a different way than I do. Different strokes. Leave it at that. If you want to "prove" a theory using statistics, the evidence has to be compelling. The article you cited, didn't even arise to the level of raising my curiosity.
  2. Overpay can be established at the beginning of the contract if the market wouldn't bear such a price for the player. The AAV is way out of whack with other #2's or 3's even taking into consideration the shorter term.
  3. Bell is not a lawyer and that is obvious. No slam at you Bells. Most people would consider that a compliment.
  4. I am not confident that Masterson can be consistently successful at his current velocity.
  5. So you can't name a single number 2 or number 3 starting pitcher that makes more than $20 million a year. There is your answer whether he is overpaid or not. There is no equating Porcello with Lester who was our # 1 for at least 4 seasons before he left and who strikes out over 200 guys per year. They are not comparable.
  6. 1-0 On infield hits and a walk. I'll take it.
  7. You people are comparing apples and oranges. Get a good comparator group. Look at other number 2 and number 3 pitchers and see what they make. That will indicate whether or not the Red Sox overpaid for Porcello.
  8. How many number 2 or 3 pitchers make over $20 million per year?
  9. No one thinks that this guy is a top of the rotation ace. I don't think anyone is claiming that. Maybe he will be our best pitcher this season, but he has not even been a #2 guy on a staff yet. I wonder how many non-number 1 starting pitchers make $20 + million/year and who are they?
  10. I agree with you, and I think that this Porcello deal is an indicator of that direction. Bells, however, disagrees with us.
  11. Porcello is a solid pitcher, but this is not a real value contract. He may perform up to the level of this contract, but I doubt that will outperform the value of his contract. There is a downside here -- that he doesn't ever perform like an elite $20 million pitcher. There is also the possibility that he performs at the elite level an earns his money. I see little probability that he outperforms the contract value. In my book, there is downside risk, with little possibility of upside reward. Also, this contract probably precludes the Red Sox from making a serious bid for the next group of top FA pitchers.
  12. The question is whether they just paid a Mercedes price for a Hyundai.
  13. Worth $20 million/year?
  14. I think the $20 million mark is looked upon by many as a demarcation above which elite pitchers get paid. I don't think Porcello is viewed by many as being in the elite group.
  15. AGon has rediscovered the power that he lost in Boston. He has 5 Homers already. That is a fast start.
  16. Haven't you heard the expression: "If you have it, flaunt it."
  17. Here is the problem that I have. Not every article that does some statiscal research arises to the level of a "study". The other so-called "study was an article and it's conclusion was based on faulty data. Garbage in. Garbage out. If the data is faulty, the study lacks integrity. As for backing up ones opinions, I don't watch baseball to give myself homework, but I do have opinions as the result of watching for almost 50 years. This is a message board where I come to express and share those opinions. I am not looking to convince others of my opinions. I really don't care much about that. Howevere the lawyer in me will examine the evidence presented before I will admit that it indicates that my opinion is not supported by facts. The study in that other link was an article with a theory based on faulty stats and assumptions.

  20. I don't think high tension wires have been linked to any medical conditions, but continue wearing your tinfoil hat. Few can carry it off like you do.
  21. Papelbon survives by 3 or 4 feet. Damn!
  22. Sorry old buddy Papelbon. We are going to have to beat you tonight.
  23. There is no such thing as clutch!
