  1. I fundamentally disagree with this. The GM's job is to assemble a team of players who perform well, not to assemble players who look good on paper.
  2. I remember Tony C. I knew a lot of the stats in the Ryan article. The key one is that he reached 100 HRs faster than anyone. He had 100 HRs at age 22. He was tall and rangy and he was still filling out his frame. He had tremendous power. He had the tragic injury and missed an entire season. After returning he hit another 56 Homers in 2 seasons with the Red Sox. What no one except Tony C and the doctors knew was that he was hitting all of those HRs while blind in one eye. He had no depth perception. His comeback was incredibly brave. This guy was not a bust. His career was tragically short but he was a star player for the Red Sox and an All Star.
  3. Very sad. R.I.P Hendu.
  4. What do you have against trophy wives?
  5. It is catchy. If they are 10 games behind the Yankees in June, that is what I will be calling him.
  6. Dumbo is good too. I don't think I started with Benny the Boob in the offseason. I at least waited until Spring Training. People jumped all over me when I used it. Flame wars started. It is interesting that it is already open season on DD, and only you are saying to give him a chance.
  7. I preferred Boy Blunder and Benny the Boob
  8. I agree with you about Clemens --- always a jackass. When he came to NY, he would make remarks that deliberately reflected poorly on Boston and its fans. There was no need to stick the needle like he did. BTW, What do you have against bimbos with implants? I don't have that bias.
  9. For the mixing and matching to be done effectively, we need a good manager. Farrell can not figure out how to get out of a paper bag even if the top is open and he is holding a box cutter. The man looks confused after the ceremonial first pitch.
  10. DD has a much longer resume than BC. When DD was released, he was not doing a good job, but his poor job in 2015 would not discredit the preponderance of good work done for many years. BC had a very short tenure, the preponderance of which was horrendously bad which is why he was fired. He was doing a bad job. Unlike DD, he did not have an extensive resume with a body of good work to point to. At the time he was fired he was a bad GM. Maybe he could have become a good GM, but when he was fired the record of his tenure was bad.
  11. If you've got it, flaunt it.
  12. The horse riding episode was like a dagger to my heart and I cursed Boggs as he was on that horse hoping the horse would throw him. He was the first big Sox Star in my lifetime to leave the Sox and go to the hated Yankees. In the more than 20 years since he left us, Damon and Ellsbury left us for the Yankees and Pedro left us for the Mets. Unlike the others, the Red Sox never made an offer to Boggs. I hate when our guys get poached by the Yankees, but I no longer blame the players or hold a grudge against them. Our owners simply no longer wanted them and they had to pursue there careers. We were pretty vicious with Damon, a guy who played extremely hard for us. I don't think he understood the vehemence -- and I think that is why he spurned the opportunity to return that one September.
  13. DD wasn't doing a good job in Detroit at the time he parted ways with the Tigers. I don't disagree.
  14. Uh, but you are blowing up everyone else's inbox with those photos.
  15. Ooops! LOL!! And now this is my 3rd post in this thread. Damn it!
  16. I've lived too long to expect that we have 3 pitchers in our system who will become special major league pitchers. If they are legitimately in our top 6 prospects, I don't feel warm and fuzzy about the stock on the farm.
  17. Price should get 200 innings. I would expect that Porcello should eat around 200 innings unless he implodes again like he did in 2015. ER should be good for 160-170 innings. Kelly and Buch are a Forrest Gump box of Chocolates-- you never know what you are going to get. I really hope that DD is working to get another top starter, because the potential lack of innings from our starters could burn out the bullpen.
  18. I will not be relegated to discussing topics in this thread. If the mood strikes me to bring up Wily Mo Pena for Bronson Arroyo, I will do it in one of the other threads. This will be my first and last post in this thread. Down with censorship.
  19. The Mets are going cheap. This was a reasonable price to pay and the Mets made no attempt to sign him. They are also going to let Cespedes walk.
  20. I agree with this post 100%. The back and forth has been civil and there is nothing else to discuss right now. If others don't like it, tough luck. When they resort to dictating what we can discuss and what positions we take, that is obnoxious.
  21. Disturbing? Not at all. It is just evidence that no one was beating down his door to give him a GM job. DD was released from his contract to pursue other opportunities. I realize that this could be a save face explanation provided by the Tigers, but the Red Sox hired Ben's replacement while he was still with the Red Sox. There is no plausible cover story for that. He'd been displaced (if you don't like the word "fired").
  22. That is how I see Elias -- as a long man/spot starter. He might even be a late inning lefty specialist.
  23. The position with the Yankees was not for GM. Oh, I forgot, Ben would rather teach than be a GM.
  24. Call the Box Office at JetBlue Park. They will tell you when the visiting players tickets get turned in and what time to line up at the Box Office. In past years, I heard that it is not difficult to get tickets in this way.
  25. Clemens totally sucked up to Steinbrenner and affirmatively took swipes at Boston.
