  1. How would a pitcher go about avoiding bad innings?
  2. This pretty much how governments operate. When I moved to my current home 25 years ago, the local government was trying to shove a incinerator down our throats. They were going to put it spitting distance from the Bethpage Golf Course. At a Town Hall Meeting, that was forced upon the politicians, "our representatives" told us that they couldn't put the project up for a referendum, because that would not be allowed by NY's Constitution. I pointed out to them that there were many other ways to gauge the opinion of their constituents, but they opted to go forward with the project under cover of darkness. Then the representative of the Incinerator company disingenuously tried to influence us by telling us that our taxes for garbage carting would go down, to which I replied that I wouldn't hold my breath, because what would be saved on garbage carting would be spent by the politicians on something else. Even the most politically unaware constituent understood that local taxes never go down. In the end the local citizens unmasked the politicians and their secret deal and they were all ousted in the next election. As his last act in office afterlosing the election, the Town Supervisor killed the deal. Damn politicians. In NH, the politicians managed to hurt the taxpayers and Schilling.
  3. Unless he starts killing cats and dogs for fun, I will always put Big Schill on a well deserved pedestal.
  4. I was right with all of it.
  5. It won't be long before he is moving refrigerators again.
  6. You might be getting a little caught up in the numbers-- on pace almost never means anything and certainly not this early in the season.
  7. I love all these runs, but 8 runs should be enough to win on any give day. DD needs to shore up the pitching for when the offensive slump comes.
  8. Prior to 1996, they also had Tino Martinez. Prior to AROd in 95, they had Griffey, Buhner and Tino. That is not a wasteland, and Edgar's best seasons by far were from '95 to 2000.
  9. Let's not discount the high probability that he will be gone by the All Star Break.
  10. And then there is your fretting over the hypothetical fretting of other fans. You really are very busy with worry.
  11. Most pitchers would have shut it down in May of 2004 as that is when he injured the sheath for his tendon. From May on, he was pitching by taking a shot of Lanacaine before the game to numb his foot and as the season went on he was getting additional shots during the game. His sheathing really blew apart in game 1 against the Angels. There was no way that he should have pitched after that. Pitching through the 2004 season cost him 2015 and it arguably could have accelerated the deterioration of his shoulder that ended his career. His contributions cannot be understated. He was the final big piece who was acquired to put us over the top -- and he delivered despite that his body betrayed him. I remember that commercial where he was hitchhiking and he says that he is headed to Boston to help end an 86 year old curse. He certainly did.
  12. Except that he was still money in the post season and the World Series.
  13. Ortiz played in better lineups? Edgar at one point was in the same lineup with Griffey, ARod and Buhner among others. That was some lineup.
  14. I think that you might be letting your personal dislike for him color your opinion. It was an amazing performance in every respect. I have seen a lot of dramatic a performances in sports over 50 years, and I can't remember a single time when an athlete underwent an experimental surgical procedure to allow him to perform and then performing dominantly on that sports biggest stage. I don't think any other athlete would consent to that as it could endanger his career. It pretty much cost him the next season.
  15. September 2011 was on Theo imo. It was pretty clear going into that month that the starting pitching was in a shambles. Although we needed to win very few games that month to make the playoffs, I warned people that the team was spiraling down the drain without some pitching reinforcement. Still, with just one or two breaks we make the playoffs. Those breaks never came. In the last week of the season, he desperately tried to trade for Bruce Chen and Chris Capuano.
  16. Iwould argue that Ortiz has accomplished significantly more as a DH than Edgar, but even if they are equal statistically as hitters, Papi is hugely significant in the history of one of the games premier franchises. Edgar does not have the same significance to Seattle. Imo, it is not even close.
  17. Schill won 2 Pedey won 2. The first one was the hardest and Schill played a key role and made a dramatic impact on that first run.
  18. David Ortiz is a hitting God!
  19. You are quoting me out of context. I don't think Farrell should be fired. When things are going right, he has demonstrated a knack of staying out of the way and letting good things happen. He did that in 2013. He has a problem when there is a bumpy road. In rose circumstances, he has demonstrated a lack of ability to right a sinking ship
  20. It was stupid. Do you think he works on his bunting? How many bunts has he lais down in the last 3 years? He doesn't bunt. You don't go to something that you never do and don't work on in a big spot. It would be like Gregerson throwing a screwball for the first time in that situation.
  21. It was a ton of fun scoring all those runs, but playoff bound teams need to win games where they only score 3 or 4 runs.
  22. Today's ballplayers do not know how to play fly balls and popups in Day Games.
  23. And yet another Buch Bomb -- this one a Grand Slam. Ugh!! Trading him was the no-brainer.
