  1. I was asked as a 13 year old to umpire a game for farm league kids. I had to call balls and strikes from behind the pitcher because they had no mask or equipment. I did it as a favor to the guy running the league. It is really hard calling pitches from behind the mound when kids are lobbing the ball. If it lands in the catchers glove, it passes over the batter’s head. If it passes the batter in the zone, it rolls to the catcher. The parents and managers were brutal about my umpiring and they tried to cheat also. The game was played under protest, because the one coach assisted one of his players in running from 3rd base. It was a terrible experience.
  2. The numbers listed for the starting pitchers are too high considering that the in vogue strategy for starting pitchers is to go 3-5 innings at most.
  3. The range of outcomes is usually all bad. A parent just tries to get medical care and legal support for their troubled child while hoping for what would seem like a miracle.
  4. Greinke was getting congratulations from Baker and others. The announcers were speculating that he was done. Maybe Dusty would have pinch hit in next inning. Most relievers are 1 inning pitchers these days.
  5. Baker was taking him out regardless of whether or not his place in the order came up.
  6. I haven’t read that rag in years. Be comforted in the fact that almost no one reads it.
  7. Yes, Happy Halloween.
  8. That was douchey.
  9. Denny is okay. This ^ isn’t.
  10. RIP Jerry. I will miss him. He made my watching experience much more enjoyable. I knew that he would not be coming back this time by the way the people in the Red Sox organization reacted to it, and when I saw him with the oxygen throwing out the first pitch, I knew that he didn’t have much time left. Still, it happened more quickly than I expected. RIP. I will always remember how graciously he treated every fan who approached him in the booth at Spring Training.
  11. If he told his manager that he was out of gas, Dusty had to take him out. If not, Dusty should have rode him for 20-25 more pitches. It is Greinke, and when he is rolling, he is as good as they come.
  12. When a manager takes out his potential Hall of Fame starting pitcher after 4 scoreless innings and 58 pitches, he deserves to lose the game.
  13. i have heard about Cici’s but never tried it. The reviews of them are all the same— awful. The worst I have had was a place called Zesty’s. Pizza has to be really bad of I throw it out. But I am spoiled being from Brooklyn, NY:
  14. But Jackie Robinson played form Brooklyn
  15. Flip phones were great because they went 2- 3 days on a charge.
  16. I really want the team to keep Bogaerts, but I am betting that he gets traded this offseason after seeing the story on the Red Sox site that XB plans to opt out after 2022. This smells like a planted story without any sources. It will make it easier for the team to move him and explain it to the fans. It is a scumbag tactic imo.
  17. You are old. Moon is old. I am old. We all support Robo umps. There goes that theory.
  18. Franchy Cordero has been outrighted and removed from the 40 man roster. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/10/red-sox-designate-franchy-cordero-for-assignment.html
  19. Robo managers at their press conferences would say things like: ”He battled in that AB” ”He has been impacting the ball” ”We like the way the ball has been coming out of his hand.” ”The season is a marathon not a sprint” ”He has electric stuff” ”We love his energy” ”The metrics indicate” plus 5,000 other pre-programmed responses. What’s that you say, we already have robot managers?
  20. I thought Max was proposing Robo Managers.
  21. Yes. It is a very profound thought.
  22. In the infield, I would pencil in Dalbec at 1B full time. I’d get a LHH backup. I would look to upgrade at 2B. Arroyo is not the full time answer, but I like him coming off the bench. Kike is the best fielding CFer, so leave him there. Dugo can’t handle CF full time. Schwarber should be signed to play LF and DH with JD. Dugo slides to RF and I would keep Renfroe to play against lefties and as the 4 th OFer. Pitching: 1. Sale 2. Eovaldi 3. Houck (hopefully he can handle the workload for at least 160 innings) 4. ERod (no QO but I would look to sign him for 4 years for reasonable money) 5. Pivetta Bullpen: Whitlock Barnes And a lot of work for Bloom to do. He needs to do a much better job than he has done in this regard. I agree with the notion that bullpen pitchers are not a crapshoot. Crapshoot pitchers are in the bullpen. There are solid consistent bullpen guys. Bloom needs to get some. Robles is not the answer, not is Brasier.
  23. You obviously weren’t a big baseball fan in the 60’s if you don’t understand. There was a term that was used to describe the better teams (I.e., the teams that finished in the top half of the league). They were called 1st Division teams. After 1967, the Red Sox became a perennial 1st Division team. And although the GB stats are not impressive, playing .500 ball was a sea change. Prior to ‘67, there wasn’t even hope of being competitive. The chance of a competitive season ended after opening day.
  24. The 67 Season was a defining season that completely changed the trajectory of the franchise. They went from perennial losers to a team that ran off a long string of winning seasons, including the ‘68 -71 seasons which you characterized as “nothing special at all”.
  25. Only baseball smart matters to me.
