  1. The key to being a good GM or anything else is to be a good counselor and be able to make a compelling case to the boss to convince the boss of your position. If you are very effective, you can get the boss to agree with you and think it was their idea. That is what I tried to do in my career as a counselor. I had no authority to make the decision so I had to help lead the boss to the right decision. If GMs are getting overruled by their bosses on a consistent basis, they are not good at their jobs. If they have the data, research and expertise, and good communication skills, they should be able to get the boss to buy into their plan.
  2. Manny was the drama. The problem with Manny was that every season he pulled a work s*** down in the middle of the season. That didn't go over well with his teammates or the fans. OCab challenged him to a fight in 2004 if he didn't get his ass in the Lineup.
  3. Among the reasons that I heard as it was in its planning stages was to get someone slotted in between Porcello and Sale because it was hoped that it would reduce the strain on the pen from 3 games in a row after Porcello and Sale. Just dumb in concept and really poorly executed.
  4. if he thought slotting a pitcher in between Porcello and Sale would help keep the pen from getting overworked, he picked the wrong night to do it after we used 8 pitchers in an extra inning game, and he picked the wrong guy to slot into the spot.
  5. after last night's games.
  6. That is a good point. The ball normally carries very poorly at night games at the Coliseum.
  7. The A's have the worst record in the league and Farrell gave them a gift wrapped game.
  8. They have been plotting this for a while. I don't think it had anything to do with Sale saying anything.
  9. I was thinking this when they mentioned speeding up the game. This ball is supercharged. Hanley has already had a couple of shots over 440. One I think went 460. At least he is a fairly sizable guy. Beni is a squirt and he hit one 438 and last night Bradley (another small guy) hit one 440. This is a golf ball.
  10. It is actions like this why I think he has a low voltage brain.
  11. Yep, that is why I didn't remember the reason, because it made no sense. Is this poor kid going to make another start or is Farrell going to stick Price in between Porcello and Sale the next time around. I can't think of a single good reason how giving this kid a start would solidify our rotation.
  12. It is a thing. I hear the lantern jawed doofus talking about it. I don't remember the reason for it.
  13. This separating Sale and Porcello nonsense was not an urgent matter. They could have done that another time when they had a better pitcher to take the turn.
  14. I don't want to credit him with coming up with a strategy and then executing it.
  15. Just turn around and throw the ball over the fence. Speed up the game.
  16. This kid is not a major leaguer. What were they thinking? They should have given Johnson another shot.
  17. This guy is canon fodder.
  18. ? Recently?
  19. The pen did a great job last night-- even Abad has not been bad lately. I like what I have seen from Robby Scott so far.
  20. I think Drew's unemotional demeanor would not have been held against him if he strapped on the gear for 150 games/year. He missed large chunks of time, so it became a target. No one criticized his fielding because he didn't dive for balls. He got to almost everything standing up, but he did make his share of sliding catching. I really don't recall people screaming that he should be diving around the field. The unemotional demeanor was his problem when he started missing games.
  21. Whether the idea emanated with LL or not, a truly effective GM would be able to make an effective case to convince him otherwise. It is on the GM's no matter which way you slice it.
  22. I'd prefer Moustakas. I think he is the better fielder, and he is learning to hit a little bit.
  23. A grind it out hard fought win. Very satisfying to see the team fight like this and come up a winner.
