  1. That is how you want to define it. That is your issue, but don't tell the rest of us that it doesn't exist. You can't measure an attribute -- probably can't even define it very precisely. The clutch guy is the one who the other teammates want u in a big situation -- and that is not always the best guy on the team.
  2. And Gardenhire is not around to go to reliever after reliever after the 5th inning until he found one to fail. In order for the Twins to win, Santana needs to go at least 7 innings.
  3. Prediction: The Twins take an early 1 or 2 run lead and then the Yankees overtake them in the 5th inning or later. That is the script for this bad rerun.
  4. You make a compelling case. I do not wish him ill, but I don't wish him well either. In life, character is usually fate, and yes, I am finally attacking his character, which I didn't do until he took the money and ran -- not accepting the assignment to AAA.
  5. I am going for our bearded hammer out of the pen --MVP.
  6. Hawk Harrelson said that Jim Ed frequently had to hit is 3 shot back at the green he overshot on a par 5.
  7. I would agree with Marrero over Young. While I would prefer another potent bench bat, Young has not been that this year. We are probably better with a premium glove for late inning defense.
  8. No, it is not a performance measure. It is an attribute. The hitter can't control what happens after he hits the ball and the pitcher can't control what happens after he releases the ball. The clutch player is calm under pressure and can perform optimally. His abilities don't increase in a clutch situation. He is just able to perform up to his abilities without adverse effect. Often this will translate into statistical success, but frequently it does not, because there are intervening factors including opponents who may also be clutch. It can't be measured, because it is an attribute. How do you identify clutch. The other players and coaches can usually tell. It can be in another player's eyes, his bearing and other ways. Similarly the frightened choking player will also exhibit tells. Clutch is an attribute. Some have it. Some don't. Good players are not necessarily clutch players, and mediocre players can be clutch. A player can be clutch until he faces another player who is better and more clutch. A clutch player is not always clutch. He may have choked at some points in his career. As in golf, everyone chokes at some point. The guys who choke less than the others are the great ones. Ortiz was predominantly clutch. Denying that clutch exists, because it cannot be proved statistically is just foolishness -- a point about which to make a fatuous argument and act like a smarty pants.
  9. He's done. He can't hit enough to start for anyone and he can't field well enough to come off the bench.
  10. Short leash for Thunder.
  11. It isn't. It would be like saying calmness under pressure is a skill. It is an attribute as is clutch.
  12. That not repeatable stuff is nonsense too. Nothing can be repeatable if there are other actors and variables also affecting an outcome.
  13. Yep, you got that right.
  14. I would not carry on Young on the post season roster. I would prefer to take Rajai Davis as 4th OFer. He has stolen base speed and he is a good fielder too.
  15. Pitching was awful this year. The team ERA was 5, which is historically bad for Mets -- only the 1962 team was worse.
  16. This is nonsense regarding clutch.
  17. I just voted. Nailed it. LOL!!
  18. Congratulations Gringo on winning the Mike Grace Memorial League 2017 Championship. Your team was the class of the league all season long, going wire to wire and destroying every team in your path. It was a fun and competitive season. Hopefully, I will see you all back for another season in 2018. Next season, I want to see even more participation from TalkSox members. We have had no participation from our vocal statheads. You know who you are. They should take the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of statistics -- after all that is what Fantasy Baseball is all about. Statistics and fun. Gringo, I will be sending you the winner's share shortly.
  19. I am not saying that. I am saying that if these games are close, he needs to push all the right buttons.
  20. It has become the trademark of Farrell teams.
  21. It is mainly on Farrell to figure out how to close the deal. The boys are banged up pretty bad. Nunez still can't play. Pedroia is badly banged up as is Hanley, and Betts is on fumes. We have very few guys playing over 75%. They got Farrell 90+ wins. He needs to help them win a couple of close ones and he hasn't. He needs to contribute over the weekend of the games are close.
  22. Luckily there had been some discord or they probably would not have traded him.
  23. One of his 2 brain cells was probably in need of recharging.
  24. I'd go with Rajai Davis over Young who has been terrible all season. Also Rajai is a stolen base threat.
  25. If he never wins another game after this year, the trade will still probably be worth it.
