    Not really. The risk/reward or cost/benefit analysis should be the same. What varies is the risk tolerance due to the difference in financial resources or discretionary funds or other factors. It's counter-intuitive, but the smaller market teams will very often go for higher risk contracts, because they come at a steep discount..

    Yes, the probability of high performance goes down in later years, but the relative value of a contract is not based on any single year.

    I think what happened was that he had built up such resentment among writers that in the early years of his candidacy he was the victim of a certain amount of retribution. As years went on, offensive numbers became more and more bloated (mainly due to roids) and that diminished some of Rice's accomplishments. In the last few years (almost 20 years removed from his playing career) there weren't very many writers who covered him and had the opportunity to judge him first hand. They only had the numbers and the stats, and the stats were diminished by the decade of roids. Mattingly was a great hitter and fielder. I haven't done an analysis of their stats, but regardless of stats Mattingly didn't dominate like Rice did. Rice just flat out scared the hell out of pitchers. Yankee fans hated to see him in the batters box. He dominated in a batting order that had Evans, Lynn, Yaz George Scott, Fisk. Each of them were major offensive forces, but it was Rice who made the opponents sweat.

    I am hoping that all of these acquisitions will help in 2009. I remember that Nolan Ryan had a shredded elbow tendon when he was in his 30's pitching for the Astros. He opted not to get the surgery and shut it down and it healed by the following season. He pitched for several more seasons. Hopefully, Saito is healed. He is tough when healthy. As for Smoltz, sure he would be a huge addition if fully healthy. I am not quite as positive about penny even if he is healthy. He throws too many fastball, and I don't think you can live that way in the ALE. I would have preferred some healthy acquisitions. I am hoping that these guys pan out, but history shows me that I should not be hopeful about old injured players.

    That's not a valid comparison. How much will the yankees pay the new acquisitions in 2009. Compare that to the $20 million spent by the Red Sox.

    Combined Penny, Smotlz and Saito will probably not win as many games as Burnett or Sabathia. If they don't contribute to winning, what was the point of signing them for even one year? IMO cost/win stats are very unreliable, and if you have the lowest cost/win stat what's the point if you have less wins than your competition?

    So, to recap the Red Sox acquisitions and signings: Ramon Ramirez from KC Brad Penny-- Injured Shoulder John Smoltz-- Recuperating from Shoulder surgery (age 41). Will not pitch until June Saito-- Partially torn elbow tendon (age 39) Rocco Baldelli -- Mystery Ilness has kept him from playing much the last couple of seasons Kotsay-- Not much of a hitter The Yankees have added: Sabathia--Cy Young Winner-- age 28 A.J. Burnett- 18 wins 2008 - age 31 Teixeira- Offensive stud and gold glove winner. Age 28 Swisher-- age 27

    I didn't say that we needed KRod. I was just disputing your claim that mediocre pitchers cost 5 yrs. $83 million. The best reliever went for less than half of that.

    Lowe will go for about half of that. As for relievers, KRod went for less than half of that.

    After signing Baldelli, I didn't see the need for getting Kotsay who is not a very good offensive player.

    This guy has a partially torn elbow ligament. He opted not to get Tommy John surgery. I don't understand this bargain basement mentality of stockpiling players with serious physical issues.
