I agree completely. IMO Hansen didn't get ruined by getting rushed to the majors. The kid just can't repeat his delivery, and he has never been able to correct that flaw. He's still young, so time has not completely run out on him. If he can't make the necessary adjustments, he will be a failure of his own accord. It will have nothing to do with getting rushed.

Baseball is a business. Yes, it also does a lot of charitable and community work without ulterior motive. However, MLB would not subject it's most valuable assets to injury in a tournament unless it was motivated by financial considerations. To do otherwise would be stupid and reckless from a business perspective.

Risk of what? I don't see how letting him get a few outings at the ML level would put him at "risk". It think it would be a good learning opportunity. If he were to flop, it would help him to identify the adjustments that he will have to make in order to be successful in the majors. If he were to succeed, there is nothing bad about that.

Bard has done nothing but throw strikes all Spring. He has not struggled with command at all. He has had quite a few outings thus far and in my recollection, he hasn't struggled with command in one of them.

His dropoff was precipitous. After 1986, he looked like a blind man at the plate. He just had no chance. The point is that the end can come suddenly. The point was not to compare Gedman to Varitek.

It is possible that Varitek has fallen off the cliff. It happened just that fast with Rich Gedman, who had been a pretty good offensive catcher.

When $100 million is invested in getting a player, $ is the be all and end all. They were willing to overpay for Dice K's onfield performance, because they had hoped to open marketing opportunities in Japan. The signing of Tazawa hurt the Red Sox relations with Japanese baseball. Japan is a matured baseball market. It is already very popular. There has been professional baseball there since before WWII. They don't need the WBC to popularize the game there. If anything MLB is in many ways a threat to professional baseball in Japan as it continues to poach Japan's best players.

Lucky Bastard! I had to go to a wedding that day. I missed most of what happened after the brawl. My sister in law called me at the wedding to let me know about the dramatic ending. I enjoyed the wedding after that.

Lugo's only hope was to win the job coming out of camp and to get hot in April. Once he loses the job to Lowrie, he will never get it back. Lowrie can hit and he is a switch hitter. Lugo will be the 2009 super-sub utility player.

No, but I think this tournament is a huge zero. It screws up ST which I look forward to every year. I just wish they would end it. The biggest reason to end it is that nooooo one cares about the stupid tournament. It is meaningless. When the Sox played the Puerto Rican national team at Ft. Myers, it was the thinnest crowd that I have seen in 6 years. The Sox must have held back a lot of tickets only for sale to fans of the Puerto Rican national team and they went unsold. I can't think of any other explanation, because the following day against the Marlins the park was packed.

This is why I hate the WBC. Nobody cares. The stadiums are empty. Star players get injured for a completely meaningless tournament. With Lugo down, if Pedroia goes down, what does the opening day IF look like?

Our bullpen is likely to get a lot of use because the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation are not very reliable and Dice K has trouble going deep into games. The pen needs as much depth as possible, because some of the guys out there are likely to break down. Bard and Tazawa can be optioned back and forth to the minors and they will provide very valuable depth. IMO, none of the relievers should get traded. The bullpen will be the strength of this team. It will need some fresh reinforcements along the way.

But they keep starting him in big games. That's the problem. If he was gone, management would not be able to continue making that mistake. I'd like to see him gone. I think that all the talk about the excess of pitching for this team is mistaken. After the solid top three, there is Wakefield, Penny, Bucholz, Smoltz, and Masterson. Out of those 5 guys, it would not surprise me if Francona cannot find two dependable starters to take the ball every 5 days. Wakefield has a torn labrum and his durability is waning. Bucholz stunk up the place last season. There is no guarantee that he can be effective this season. Penny looks like an injured bust. Smoltz is 41 with a surgically repaired arm. Masterson is just a pup. I don't think the rotation is deep at all. Heaven forbid that one of the top 3 goes down for any length of time. I'd like them to dump an increasingly unreliable Wakefield and acquire a more dependable arm.
