No matter how you slice it, if the Yankees were to lose the Division after leading by 8 games in September, it would take a monumental collapse. It would be very interesting if the Yanks blew the division. I believe that they have already clinched a playoff spot, but they have not had a celebration. I guess they are waiting to clinch the Division. If they blow that, they will go to the playoffs without having celebrated anything. That would be very strange.

They have changed their tune. If they lose the Division, it would be a huge choke (even historic), so they have to save face and rationalize. If they end the season in a downward spiral, the Angels would roll over them in the first round.
