  1. It wasn't a rumor. Tito made a statement at some point last season that he believed that Ellsbury had a better understanding of the type of commitment (and he used the word commitment) to be successful at the major league level. After playing that clip, the commentator said that Ellsbury did have a reputation in the minors regarding commitment.
  2. My recollection is that Hanley also played CF in the Red Sox system.
  3. Yes, they started inducting Negro league players after Teddy Ballgame got inducted and he mentioned in his speech that the Negro league players belonged there too.
  4. I'm not making the last part up. He had a reputation for having less than full commitment. I don't know if that meant milking injuries. At 80% he would have had over 40 steals and saved us from putting up with Eric Patterson.
  5. ... or maybe he forgot that there were two outs.:dunno:
  6. By the time the fielder looks for the runner from second, it is too late. They are trained to cut off the run at the plate.
  7. I'm completely serious. Football players play with broken ribs all the time. This guy has missed a 6 month season. Unless he has some other medical condition preventing him from healing, it is inexplicable that he has missed this much time. I'll defer to jacko on this, but Ellsbury didn't have a good reputation in the minors for issues like this.
  8. Double steals are designed to get the runner on third to score. Many times the runner from first will drop to the ground. By the time the fielder reaches down to apply the tag, the runner from third has scored. Lowrie made the right play. He didn't even give the runner at second a thought.
  9. There's nothing to be risked from playing with nondisplaced rib fractures other than pain. Ellsbury is a fragile wuss.
  10. That's fair. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to deal with this. The integrity of baseball statistics and records has been tainted forever. I lay the blame on Selig, MLB executives, and club owners. It was obvious that the usage was rampant, but they liked the growing attendance and excitement about the HR races. They let the game be disgraced.
  11. They canceled the game for the hurricane. Did it end up raining a lot in Boston?
  12. Manny said it was his fault, and he takes responsibility for the ugly ending. That's more than Nomar ever did, and he precipitated his own exit every bit as much as Manny did. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2010/09/manny_i_would_h.html
  13. What has changed is that until 2010 this FO had no need to go out and get a big bat. For their entire tenure they have had big boppers. In 2002 they had Nomar and Manny. From 2003 to 2008 they had Manny and Ortiz smack in the middle of their lineup. Most teams would be lucky to have one guy like that. In 2009, they swapped Bay for Manny and still had Ortiz and Youk had become a star. Now there is no Manny or Bay and no one replaced them. Beltre did for 2010, but he can walk. Ortiz is still productive, but aging. The difference is looking ahead to 2011 it will be the first year where the FO has a big need for a big bat. Circumstances have changed.
  14. I don't think he is good enough for that. He's a minor leaguer who can come up in an emergency.
  15. I have seen enough of Daniel Nava. He has confirmed what I thought about him.
  16. Typical Ortiz-- Coming up big and carrying the team
  17. It was already over.
  18. I really hope we don't start with the dumpster diving again.
  19. These awards are pointless popularity contests.
  20. :lol:My Bronco Friend, I wish any of us mattered enough in the world of sports to have an agenda.
