1. Ryne Sandberg: for walking away from the last 2 years of the biggest contract in his career to spend more time with his family. When he did that, I thought he was a fool and I predicted that he would come back begging for his job the following Spring. Well, two maybe three weeks later, his wife filed for divorce after her fool of a husband retired to spend time with his family and work on his marriage. He came back to the Cubs begging for his job the following spring. Of course, instead of letting him have the 2 year/ $14 million that he walked away from, they gave him $1 million. A fool and his money are soon parted.
2. I haven't heard that expression in years. That brings me back. How old are you?
3. This just reinforces my opinion that Buck is the second biggest idiot in sports. This dope walked/got himself fired from the Yankees after he helped build that team into a budding dynasty and Joe Torre got to reap all of the benefits. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2011/03/orioles_manager.html
4. Albers stinks.
5. I honestly don't know what is wrong with Beckett. He looks dominant for about 4 innings and then the wheels start to come off. He looks to be better conditioned this season, but the same thing is happening in Spring Training. He seems to have no stamina.
6. Would anyone here sign either of them to their current contracts at this point in time? There is you answer to the Beckett vs. Burnett argument.
7. Two sets of fans (Yankees and Red Sox) calling each other biased. Lol! Isn't that a big part of being a fan of a team?
8. Generous strike zone for Dice K today and he is pitching well.
9. Beckett did bring us 1 of the 2 World Championships that they have won in 92 years, so he is okay with me. I am concerned that he is sliding downhill fast.
10. Oh, he's a prick. Many of them are.
11. Is this guy shot? Since last year, he can't seem to pitch effectively for more than 4 innings.
12. Wakefield got hammered tonight for 3 home runs and 6 runs. I seriously doubt whether Wake can any longer be productive at the ML level.
13. From today's Globe article by Shaughnessy about Yaz: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2011/03/16/out_of_spotlight_yastrzemski_stays_in_game_his_way/ In the article Shaughnessy mentions how Yaz has turned down 6 figure deals for books and $50k for a few hows of work for a Dental commercial. It reminds me of Yaz's final season. Each of the AL teams wanted to honor Yaz on the Sox last trip to their city that season. Yaz didn't want the distraction for himself or the team, but he relented and agreed to short ceremonies in each city, but he instructed them that he would not accept any gifts. Contrast that with Clemens' 2003 season which he announced would be his last season. He was grabbing gifts, autos etc. from all over the AL as he was honored for his fraudulent career. The Yankees lavished him with gifts. I'll bet that the greedy sociopath pig didn't return a single item when he decided to pitch for Houston the following year. What a difference!
14. Jacko is a homer!!???? I never realized that. Oh no, we don't have any homers here!!!:lol: I have no problem with Jacko being a homer. I have a problem with him being a Yankee fan.
15. Some more observations from my time down here: Papelbon is throwing quite a few offspeed pitches-- a much higher percentage than we are used toseeing from him. If he can master the secondary pitches, he should have a very successful season. Ortiz is still having a lot of trouble with lefties. He looks lost against the southpaws. I'm not crazy about Lowrie being the backup first baseman and third baseman as well as MIF. I like a power stick to back up 1st or 3rd Lin can't hit enough for the majors Iglesias is very small and slight. I can't see him being productive offensively at the ML level. Lowrie will play well enough that Iglesias will see nothing more than a September cup of coffee.
16. Giving a two year contract to a 37 year old CF is never a good idea. Hopefully, he can stay healthy enough to be a productive 4th OFer who can play about 100 games with about 350 ABs. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2011/03/cameron_remains.html
17. Gonzo sighting at City of Palms Park on Tuesday. Is that Mrs. Gonzo with him? Also spotted Dice K arriving pretty late-- around 12:30. He had a press contingent with him. It is very unusual for a player to be arriving that late.
18. The word is that he'll be playing next week. I had a Gonzo sighting today and got a picture which I'll post tomorrow.
19. I've been in Ft. Myers for a couple of days. Here's some initial reactions and thoughts: Jed Lowrie is looking noticeably stronger and more fit Beckett is looking like he also did some serious physical training in the off-season Kalish has the best OF arm that the Sox have had in years. He made two great throws today-- one to third and a pea to home plate. He also had 3 hits including a double and single to the opposite field. Youkilis's hand seems fully healed and healthy as he is hitting everything extremely hard. Pedroia is moving fine. He attempted a steal today. The foot doesn't seem to be a concern. Mat Albers sucks
20. I have never seen Montero catch, but it sounds like he has a long, long way to go in developing his defensive game. The other day the Yankee announcing crew was praising him for looking more comfortable behind the plate. They were talking about crouching behind the plate and positioning himself. They said that he looked more confident back there. I thought that was a very odd compliment, and that must mean that he is atrocious with regard to meaningful catching skills. Saying that a catcher has improved his crouch is like saying that a batter looks more comfortable holding his bat. It's meaningless. Also please stop using this space to aid the Yankee FO propaganda campaign for their young minor league pitching. None of them are ready for prime time. They are not even close and most will not accomplish anything beyond a cup of coffee at the major league level. Stop spinning the propaganda. You and I know that they are nothing more than Yankee FO media creations. Major league GMs had better not be fooled by that fact if they don't want to be royally ripped off at the trading dead line.
21. Kyle Weiland, the former Notre Dame closer doesn't seem to have much command of any of his pitches. I don't think we will be seeing him at Fenway any time soon.
22. Prior looks awesome too.
