You need to understand something about the Mets organization that I know very well from very reliable sources. They have been planting misinformation with the press for a long time. It has become so commonplace that their broader fanbase has caught on. They will plant stories of trade offers made by them that could never be verified and some where the other GM stated that the Mets never made an offer, etc. This happened with the Halladay sweepstakes one year. The Mets claimed to have offered Toronto 4 players. JP Ricciardi denied getting any such offer. The Mets are on the brink of bankruptcy. Dumping payroll is of paramount importance. However, it would be poor fan relations for the FO to disclose that they are looking to just dump fan favorites, so you get a statement like they would be willing to eat "some" salary. That's as honest as they are capable of being. The truth is (and it will be borne out when they move him) the will dump as much of his salary as they can. Prospects are not a concern. He will go to the team that takes the most salary, not the team that offers the best prospect. This gives the Red Sox a big advantage over most teams.
