  1. We're losing to a very tough All Star pitcher. We have a tough schedule.
  2. Ciriaco makes the play. He should be playing SS and Aviles should be at 2B.
  3. I'd rather have Youk at first tonight than Lillibitch.
  4. The fact is that the Red Sox bullpen was much better in late inning and pressure situauions in 2011 than it has been this season. The Bullpen was second best in batting average and OPS in 2011. This season they are the second worst in the AL in those categories. That's the relevant math. Last years bullpen had 16 blown saves for the entire season. This season we have 11 blown saves already.
  5. i guess they optioned Gomez instead of cutting Lillibitch, because Cherries is hell bent pn proving that he got something for Youk.
  6. I saw him in Spring training. I liked his stuff. He also did well in AAA. I am a bit surprised that he got DFA'd.
  7. Nor can you disprove my proposition. The raw numbers show him 2 games better than Aceves if he just substituted for Aceves. I think my position that adding Papelbon to our bullpen which includes Aceves in a more comfortable role and dropping the 7th or 8th guy from our pen would have improved the pen and changed the dynamic of the late innings. If you want to say that I can't prove it with numbers, fine, but you can't disprove it either, because there is no way for you to model the changed dynamic of adding him to the pen. However, to think that adding Papelbon to any team's bullpen would not improve that pen would be absurd.
  8. Iwasn't arguing value of contract etc. I was just simply making the point that subtracting him from the roster has cost us wins. I think that is a fair statement.
  9. Most teams keep their premier pitchers. It wouldn't surprise me at all.
  10. I doubt the Phillies will move Hamels at the trading deadline. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8162263/philadelphia-phillies-preparing-sizable-offer-cole-hamels
  11. I'm not quite sure what you love about this, nor do I have the slightest idea of the significance of the opinions on this forum in the outcome. What are you talking about?
  12. Bard walked a guy and hit a guy tonight including 2 wild pitches.
  13. Wow!! It was obvious his baseball career was over. I hope this kid is out of the woods.
  14. What would we get for him? Maybe a subscription to MLBTV? The guy has been on waivers several times over the last 2 years and no one took him for free. I don't see getting anything more than a questionable A ball prospect who can double as a peanut vendor.
  15. What size inbox would befit a king?
  16. As for Papelbon, purely from a perfomance perspective, we would have 4 or 5 more wins if he had been at the closer this season. Aceve has lost 6 games plus blown 4 saves. Except maybe in his worst season, Papelbon didn't lose and blow that many games in an entire season. Papelbon walking may have been the right financial decision, but if he was our closer this season we would still be right in the thick for the division lead. We'd probably be back 5 games at the most. Yes, the rest of the bullpen has done fine, but not the closer.
  17. Good post, E1. My fear going forward is that if they don't come up eith a good strategy to fix this team and then be disciplined in the execution of that strategy, that the Red Sox will become what the Orioles were for more than a decade-- an overpaid dysfunctional group of under perfoming players. I see that you are still clinging to some hope that this mess is not largely Theo's fault. That's okay, because it was not entirely his fault, but whether some of his poor decisions resulted from him caving to pressures, that doesn't make him less accountable. Keep in mind that his last big money blunder was something that he wanted so badly and believed so strongly that he went against the expressed doubts of John Henry. JH said he did not agree with the Carl Crawford signing. Theo didn't cave to the pressure. He may have been sloppy in maintaining discipline, but it wasn't for lack of a backbone.
  18. It's not paranoia if people are actually talking aboout you.
  19. His numbers are in decline for the second year in a row. People forget that he was thought to have had an off year in 2011 and people were expecting a bounce back year in 2012. He has gotten worse. It is not just a couple of bad months. The Red Sox record in Lester starts in 2011 was 16-15, and he had Bard and Papelbon to hand the ball late in the game. 2011 was not a good year. This year is worse. I would move this guy now before he becomes Time Lincecum.
  20. Garza is just another #2/3 guy OMO. We have enough of those. We need an ace. If we are going to go for a #2/3 guy, they should go for Dempster. He'll be much cheaper than Garza.
