    A Joe McCuen would have been so much better for us. At least the guy can hit with a little sting in his bat. He also plays all the infield positions and all the outfield positions. Cora for two years is a waste of a lot of money even though in total dollars it doesn't seem that much. Whatever we are paying could have gone towards some of those free agents. If Cora stays as a utility man only he could have some value for us, but under no circumstances should the FO allow Francona to give him a starting spot. He absolutely stunk in that position when he had to play extended innings.

    Scaff, you are right about Francona on that one. Look, I do like what Cora brings to the table. The guy is smart and heady and an excellent bunter. He cannot, however, play as a regular any more and has no speed to speak of. As long as he is used right he should be ok. I just believed there were better utility players out there.

    We have already resigned holdovers Timlin, Wakefield and now Cora. That doesn't sound like improvement to me; only more of the same. It will only get worse if we don't upgrade at shortstop. Yes, Gonzales can field with the best of them, but the fact is that except for one hot streak this past season he was a complete washout at the plate. Look at his offense. He cannot hit, cannot hit in the clutch, cannot bunt for a base hit, cannot even get down a sacrifice, cannot steal a base when he does get on because he hasn't the speed, cannot draw a walk because he rotten plate discipline. In other words, he is a complete zero offensively. As it was, even Francona knew it because he started pinch hitting for him late in the season---four months too late.

    I read something similar on Dirt Dogs soxfan. Was it you by any chance? Anyone who is celebrating the return of Cora for two more years must be a glutten for cheap thrills. This is the same guy who fell off a cliff when pressed into regular service last year, his average going from 300 down to the 230's in two shakes of a monkey's ass. We all know Francona loves this guy, but, then again, we all know about Francona's brain malfuntions. As long as Cora stays in a utility role we might be ok, but anything resembling a regular job means our team is headed for a very bad scene. :blink: :blink:

    E.D., jog your memory of those games. We actually could have won three of the, the second, third and fifth. Crisp left numerous runners on base in that second game where we blew a four run lead, the third game where we were one out from a win, and the fifth game where we lost 2-1. You right, we couldn't have won two games; we could have won three of them. It was not all his fault but you expect a leadoff man to get on base better than 1 time in 19 tries. Consider he could have stolen a few bases and suddenly that series might have taken a different turn.

    Well Mar gave you your answer on that. I remember Helms as a Braves prospect that never seemed to quite get over the hump before they dumped him. The Braves have always been good in judging who their real god prospects were and were the suspects. Helms was a suspect.

    Bosoxwest, please, leave that spoon away from eyes. It is not as bad as that. I appreciate a good argument even though I was on the opposite side. Hey, we want to help our team be better and all ideas should be thrown on the table. Who knows? Maybe Theo might tune in and get an inspiration. It couldn't hurt. :D :D

    I won't argue that point 700 because I don't know that much about him, but I will bet you he can play that position better than Wily Mo Pena can. Pena can't play it at all, and for the record, he can't play left field at Yankee Stadium. That I saw with my own eyes.:dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

    Bosoxwest, great post. You make great points and even though we disagree on Loretta you lay out a pretty good picture of why he is not good for the Red Sox. I'll go one better. Runners on first and second and two out and Alex Gonzales at the plate. Gonzo pops out to the 1Bman in foul territory. Or this, runner on first, tied game, no out and Gonzo at the plate. Attempted bunt is caught by the catcher. Believe me, those scenarios happened a hell of a lot more last year than Loretta not getting to a grounder up the middle, and, one more thing, I think our pitchers were a hell of a lot madder at Gonzo's offensive booboos than Loretta's.

    Jsing, that's what I love about you. You don't mince words. What I think is that Loretta was not fully healthy with the injury he suffered in 2005. We did not see him at his best. Now I am a bit biased since I know the guy personally and he once played for the SR. Babe Ruth Team I founded in 1973. The guy is intelligent, a class act, and a real good guy in the clubhouse. He is also a better hitter than he showed last year even though he was over 300 most of the year. One more thing, don't try and sell Alex Gonzales to me if that is your intention. That is a complete zero with a bat in his hands---can't hit, can't get a walk because he has no plate discipline, can steal bases, can't bunt either for a hit or a sacrifice. I mean a washout. SS is where we should be talking about upgrading.:dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

    Didn't know Nady was a college third baseman; that could change my thinking somewhat. Bagwell? A few years ago I would have done handstands if we could have gotten him but right now? Are we even sure he is healthy? To me that's the key. I'll throw out another name you never thought of. Ryan Klesko. He sat out all of last year except for one full game and one pinch hitting appearance, yet he went 4 for 5 with a homer and double. He might be a real sleeper for us and wouldn't cost us hardly anything. Well, this is the hot stove league talksox version. All the ideas thrown out on the table.

    I really don't understand all this criticism about Mark Loretta. The fact is his hands were still bothering him from his wrist injury in 2005 and we never saw him at his best. As it was he had close to 190 hits. I would like to see him back for two more years. I know he can hit even better than he did this year, and though his range is not superior, he fields his position well and he can make the DP with the best of them. OK, here goes some controversy. I would put Pedroia at SS; it is his natural position and I'm reminded of a guy named David Eckstein who the pundits said could play SS. Sure, two WS titles later I don't hear that anymore. And---Pedroia has a better arm than Eck does and covers more ground. It could be done.

    Jsing, two or three years ago I would have done handstands if we could have gotten Sweeney, but the guy is a walking MASH unit and, frankly, I've had my fill of injured Red Sox players the past season. If we can get a consistent fifth hitter in the lineup, we could accept Youk with his 15-18 homers, especially if he can hit close to 300 and drive in about 80 runs. Remember he got tired at the end of the season and one reason could be it was the first time he had played as a regular in Boston and the pressure and wear and tear could have taken its toll physically and mentally. He will be better next year I believe. :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

    GOM, I think you're off your Dome with that ridiculous prediction. The Red Sox have their work cut out for them, but we have the money and the means to strengthen our team for a run for the pennant next year if Theo Epstein plays his cards right and gets the right players for our team. I think John Henry is going to make money available for the right free agents we need, and I think some trades are already in the works. If I were you I'd keep my eyes on the Sheffield and A-Rod sitatiions. Gary is an incendiary bomb ready to go off (again), and A-Rod is so despised by the fans and press, and so disliked by his own teammates that it ought to give plenty to think about without worrying about how we will be doing come April. :D :D

    Craig Counsell is a David Eckstein type player who get more out of his ability than most anyone else. He is a hard nosed player who knows how to win because he has won. He would be a good fill in for two or three years until Jed Lowrie is ready. Counsell can hit, bunt, run the bases well and works the count. Of course, because of all that Epstein will probably wind up with some stiff, maybe Gonzales again which to me is the same thing.:dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

    Jsing, you can have your opinion and I will respect it unless you try and tell me you would rather have Alex Gonzales in your lineup over Mark Loretta. Then you lose all credibility with me on that topic. Just don't tell me that you would pick Alex over Mark. :o

    Cabrera signed a four year contract with the Angels right after we stupidly decided we didn't want him back. He has two more years on his contract, which would be perfect for us because I believe that Jed Lowrie will be ready by 2009 to play shortstop for us for a long time. The only one I don't like in that lineup, though, is Pena. I just don't think he is that good an outfielder, in fact I think he is pretty brutal out there, and he strikes out way too much and does not hit in the clutch. :D :D
