We have already resigned holdovers Timlin, Wakefield and now Cora. That doesn't sound like improvement to me; only more of the same. It will only get worse if we don't upgrade at shortstop. Yes, Gonzales can field with the best of them, but the fact is that except for one hot streak this past season he was a complete washout at the plate. Look at his offense. He cannot hit, cannot hit in the clutch, cannot bunt for a base hit, cannot even get down a sacrifice, cannot steal a base when he does get on because he hasn't the speed, cannot draw a walk because he rotten plate discipline. In other words, he is a complete zero offensively. As it was, even Francona knew it because he started pinch hitting for him late in the season---four months too late.
