  1. You ask two very good questions Kilo and I'm not sure I can answer them adequately, but here goes anyway. He could take Manny's place but we probably would not get near the production we are used to from Manny. I worry about his strikeouts and lack of clutch hitting (ok, great grandslam against Baltimore). As for Coco, he could get a start or two out there if Tito is of a mind to do so. However, I am starting to get a little worried about J.D. Drew. He has been slumping for a little too long. He needs to break out.
  2. I don't know about you BoSox but I was wondering how our team would respond after the glow of yesterday's comeback wore off and we started worrying about how to deal with the Tigers. Daisuke came through with a real gem tonight and we got him 15 hits; that's the mark of a very good team. Now what we need is a top notch game from Tim tomorrow and some good hitting support to aid him along.
  3. Schill, all I'm concerned about is tomorrow's game and hope Tim has his "A" game going and we give him the hitting support we did last time. I get the impression the team feels the same way because the Red Sox seemed to be on a mission tonight playing the hottest team in the AL. I got the impression that yesterday's win was just that, yesterday. To me that is a very good sign.
  4. Au contraire Kilo. I saw him several times and in all those occasions he played horrible in the outfield. On Fenway's Opening Day 2006 I was him play a routine fly ball off his glove for a two run homer, turning a 5-1 breather into a 5-3 nailbiter. You know about his YS adventures, and I also saw him on TV in 2005 as a member of the Reds when he played a fly ball off his head for a homer off the Pesky Pole. Now that may still not be a large enough sample for you, but it certainly seems to me that it is enough to tell me that this guy still hasn't learned how to effectively track a fly ball. In CF? Well he is better, but, please, don't say LF. He can't play out there either. As for Manny, he is much better in the outfield that meets the eye. Again a small sample but I saw him make some outstanding plays in Boston, Anaheim and New York.
  5. Riverside, if you are right, all I want you to do is take a look at the guy's total package. He cannot play RF; I know he cannot play left (saw him at YS last year and saw that with my own eyes). We have Ellsbury close to taking over in CF so where does that leave Wily Mo? In my opinion, the best place for him is DH and there is no room for him in that role on this team. If you are right there must be some team in the AL who would be willing to rebuild and give this guy a full chance to show if he can ever become the hitter that the Yankees, Reds and Red Sox have believed he could become.
  6. Wily is serviceable in center up to a point. What I was suggesting was to put him on waivers and see if anyone claims him. We then can take him off and see if we can get something for him. Besides, CF is out for him very soon because Jacoby Ellsbury is getting that spot by next year if not before. Anyway, we beat a very hot team tonight and Matsuzaka came through with a CG just at the time we needed it very badly. If Josh misses a start or two it is very important that we get top notch pitching performances from Daisuke, Tim and Schilling.
  7. If you think in your total naiviity that Wily Mo Pena is a player that is more of an asset to us than a liability, then I would suggest you put a lot more brain in your diet because you're not only full of s*** but stupid to boot. Do you believe your own ******** or do you believe your eyes? Did you see the game Friday night. A two run error and a ball that he misplayed for a double that Drew would have had in his sleep. Those two misplays probably cost us a chance to sweep the O's this past weekend. Tell you what smartass; you tell me why you think this guy is the greatest thing since sliced bread and I will listen to what you have to say, but give me any of this s*** about this guy being a 35 homer man because by the time he got those dingers he would have struck out 1000 plus times and four or five seasons would have gone by.
  8. Wily Mo Pena has that affect on his detractors and I am one of his biggest. Fortunately, I would never ever put Bucholz in such a trade, but, make no mistake, the longer we keep Pena the less his value will be. Eventually he will have to be released. The guy is a complete washout in the outfield.
  9. Kilo, as you know I want Wily Mo moved and as quickly as possible because he is a disaster in the outfield and will cost us dearly if we keep him around, but I just wonder what we could get for him. His reputation for strikeouts and muffed balls in the outfield are pretty well known now. What I would do would be to take a chance and send him down and see if anyone claims him. We could always take him off waivers if he is claimed. Then we can get a good idea just how much value he has. My guess is that he would pass through waivers.
  10. And that's why so many fans of other teams are a pack of morons when it comes to knowing the finger points in the game. Five will get you ten that if you said that to a pack of Red Sox fans, they would have broken it down and showed why he actually was slowing himself down doing that, not to mention the fact that he was risking serious injury, not to mention, not to mention a bunch of other things the Red Sox fans would have probably brought up. Again, though, Boston fans are the most knowledeable in the country--make no mistake about that.
  11. BoSox, that just has to be over-managing and thinking you're in a chess match instead of a baseball game. The llate Gene Mauch was famous for that, a very very smart baseball man. So smart, in fact, that he outsmarted himself in the ALCS in 1986. Remember that?
  12. I know it is still early but is it possible that we just might have a very special team this year? I was still higher than a kite when I got home from my walk and put on the DVD "Reverse the Curse of the Bambino". I just wanted to see my fellow Red Sox fans celebrating and regaling our team in their greatest moment of triumph. Hopefully we here will be able to do just that in the not too distant future.
  13. Well said Crespo, and that tells me you don't think anymore of Phillips' expertise than I do. Let's just hope that the finger injury isn't too serious. I almost hate to say it because I don't want to jinx anyone but we have an eight game lead. Man, that sure sounds nice.
  14. Come on Riverside, you're smarter than that. When the hell did Phillips every say something that impressed you anyway? The guy is all over the map and way off the subject. He could have spent more time talking about how well Guthrie stopped the Red Sox offense so Beckett couldn't have left with a lead and maybe a win, that is, if he had gone five. No, he focused on the negative and what's ridiculous as you pointed out was that Josh's performance was not that bad to begin with.
  15. 700 Hitter, believe this---In my 30 years as a baseball coach I never ever took out a pitcher leading by five funs with one out in the last inning and only one runner on base when he hadn't even thrown 90 pitches. Why Perlozzo did that amazes me. Guthrie wasn't tired, he was still throwing great, he still had the Red Sox totally outclassed. All I can say is that this could be a poster for over managing. I have no other idea why he would have done such a thing. Thanks Sam.
  16. Yank, what does stand out is that the Red Sox never started doing this until the 2003 season when they started making some dramatic comebacks and emotionally charged wins. You Yankees were famous for doing what's going on with my team now. I've talked until blue in the face with long time Red Sox fans and they say the same thing. We had been known for some heart wrenching and painful losses but what we did in that game against your boys or what we did today??? Sorry, it just didn't happen very much.
  17. EX, if you told your wife that you ought to take a few kuddos because I would bet dollars to donuts that most of us thought the game was a total loss by the eighth inning, especially with the worthless Pineiro in there trying to give the Orioles extra goodies. You know, the other night I was watching "Fever Pitch" as I do once every couple of weeks. There was a scene at Fenway where one of the fans in the choice seats said "THE RED SOX JUST DON'T LOSE GAMES; THEY MAKE IT AN ART FORM." I'm just starting to wonder if we are starting to make the way we are winning games a "new art form." We've had some pretty damn dramatic wins the past four plus seasons going back to '03; maybe, possibly, hopefully, prayfully, this may turn out to be a new century for the Red Sox. :D :D :D
  18. I just hope Beckett is ok, though. We cannot afford to miss him for any length of time since we already have one black hole in the rotation. How about an end to those shitpole bullpen sessions by Lester and get him into the rotation. He should be ready by now.
  19. I have to leave the house and go for a walk because I am higher than a kite. I think I will explode if I don't get out the door. What a freakin' win. I still cannot believe what I just saw. Please tell me this is not a dream Ex; it is still hard to believe.
  20. Kind of wished we had saved five or six runs from yesterday's feast for today's apparent famine. Of course with Piniero still pitching it might get worse before it gets better. And how much longer do we have to stomach Coco Crisp?
  21. I had a nasty suspicion something like this might happen. Didn't someone of this board say some weeks ago that the Red Sox always seem to have trouble with pitchers they haven't seen before. I never heard of this Guthrie kid before so I take it he is new to the Red Sox batters. What I hope is that Beckett is not going to miss significant time. We already have one black hole in our rotation; we certainly don't need another
  22. Riverside, one consolation in getting the game blacked out on MLB TV today was that I got to finally hear a post-game report. Alex Cora lauded his team as a real bunch of professionals and maybe this is the year when catch-up might not be successful against us. Francona has said repeatedly that he likes this particlular team of his and the way we came back from last night's loss was pleasing to all of us Red Sox fans. Tomorrow, we have Josh for the rubber game and though nothing is automatic we should feel good about our chances, and if I can be greedy for just a second or two, it would be really nice to see the Mariners beat the Yankees again tonight. The more daylight we put between them and us will come in very handy is we have a mini-slump somewhere along the way this season, hopefully not the June 1-3 or Sept 13-15 series against the Yankees.
  23. Kilo, before I forget--good Blog!!!! Enjoyed reading your take on the games. As for Pena, yes, we will probably have to use him to give Drew and Crisp a rest from time to time, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to be on pins and needles when a ball goes out to him. At any rate, today was a horse of a different color as we came back after the Orioles rallied and won the game going away. I'm glad they brought Lopez back up. He wasn't doing a bad job in ST. I kind of thought he was better than one or two of the guys we kept.
  24. Riverside, read from that curve reference on. You can get it. It means that those two good games will result in him getting more chances to play in the field and more and more and more chances to screw up in the field. I said it before and hope there are some who agree with me, but Pena will cost us more than he will get for us. Now, let's look ahead to today's game and root for Schilling to pitch a gem and get good offensive support, and hope to blazes that Pena is nowhere near that field this afternoon.
